Nelson Cruz is drawing interest from the Athletics, reports CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

Athletics manager Billy Beane is a fan of Cruz from his previous days in the organization and the club would like to add a right-handed bat, but the bidding may ultimately get too high. The Mariners, Mets, and Phillies are among the other teams who have reportedly shown interest.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports there are three teams "in on" Marlins closer A.J. Ramos.

Miami is just about to trade setup man David Phelps, and Ramos could very well follow him out the door. The 30-year-old right-hander has struggled a bit in 2017, but he boasts a 2.81 career ERA and 10.5 career K/9, and he's racked up 89 saves since the beginning of the 2015 season. Ramos is under control, via arbitration, through 2018.

David Phelps to the Mariners is "at the finish line," according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post adds that the trade is expected to be completed sometime on Thursday. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported early this morning that the Marlins were not enamored with the available options in the Mariners' minor league system, but it seems the two clubs have found a match. Or are very close to finding one. Phelps, 30, boasts a 2.69 ERA and 11.1 K/9 over his last 133 2/3 innings dating back to the beginning of the 2016 season and he is under contractual control through 2018.

J.D. Martinez (hand) is not in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Thursday.

Martinez got hit by a pitch Wednesday in his second-ever at-bat with Arizona and suffered a left hand contusion. X-rays turned up negative, so he should be good to go in a day or two. Chris Herrmann is starting in right field and Daniel Descalso is in left field on Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.

Diamondbacks placed RHP Taijuan Walker on the paternity leave list.

Patrick Corbin is starting in Walker's place on Thursday afternoon against the Reds. The right-hander should be back with the Diamondbacks sometime this weekend, after welcoming a child into the world.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Mariners are "fairly close" on a trade for Marlins right-hander David Phelps.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand was first to report word of the Mariners' growing interest in Phelps late Wednesday night. The 30-year-old reliever hasn't been as effective this season as he was in 2016, but he would still fit nicely into a setup role in Seattle and he is controllable through 2018. It sounds like there could be something official soon, though FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal tweeted early Thursday morning that the Marlins are "not in love" with the offerings in the Mariners' farm system.

Xander Bogaerts (hand) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Bogaerts missed a couple of games with a small sprain of a joint in his right hand. He is starting at shortstop and hitting sixth on Thursday afternoon versus Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano.
Jul 20 - 10:10 AM

Ryan Braun (calf, wrist) remains out of the Brewers' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon.

It's the second straight absence for Braun, who's battling some calf and wrist soreness. These aren't new ailments. Hernan Perez will start in left field and bat fifth versus Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon.

Zack Cozart went 4-for-6 with a home run and two RBI in an extra-inning, 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

He started things off with an RBI single in the first inning and busted a solo home run in the third frame off starter Zack Greinke. The veteran shortstop has always been a wizard in the field but this is the first season he has excelled at the dish. He was the National League starter at shortstop in his first All Star game last week. He is a free agent at the end of this season and is a prime candidate to be traded before the end of the month. He is batting .321/.400/.566 with 11 home runs, 38 RBI and 45 runs scored in 70 games.

The Royals said after Wednesday's blown save that Kelvin Herrera was still dealing with an illness.

Herrera gave up a two-run homer to Mikie Mahtook in the top of the ninth inning before being lifted from the game. It seemed the Royals made the wrong call by pitching him after he was running a high fever on Tuesday, but they won anyway on a walkoff. Herrera should be considered day-to-day.

Gerrit Cole punched out 10 batters while allowing one run in seven innings as his club defeated the Brewers 3-2 in extra innings on Wednesday.

He didn't get the win but he certainly deserved one. The big right-hander gave up a run in the first inning, then marched through six scoreless frames before being relieved after tossing 103 pitches. He surrendered six hits and didn't walk a batter in the sterling effort. It was the third strong start in a row for Cole after he struggled through the month of June. His record holds at 7-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 20 starts. He has 108 strikeouts and 27 walks in 120 2/3 innings.
Jul 20 - 12:04 AM

Jacob deGrom gave up just one run in 6 2/3 innings to earn a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals on Wednesday.

He rattled off six shutout innings before tiring in the seventh. He walked two batters in that frame and was relieved after throwing 110 pitches. Reliever Jerry Blevins promptly allowed both inherited runners to score. DeGrom improves to 11-3 with a 3.37 ERA in 19 starts. He has a splendid 144/40 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 125 2/3 innings. He lines up for a very attractive two-start week coming up, with road games against the Padres and Mariners on tap.
