Giants signed RHP Jason Berken to a minor league contract.

He should be given an invitation to spring training. Berken spent all of 2013 at Triple-A with the White Sox, holding a 3.80 ERA over 27 starts. He'll likely begin the year in the Triple-A Fresno rotation.

Brandon Phillips picked a good time for his first homer as a member of the Braves, as his sixth inning blast Saturday proved to be the difference in a 4-2 win over the Padres.

Phillips went down to get the Clayton Richard offering, walloping it to the deepest part of the ballpark to give the Braves the lead. Adonis Garcia followed with a solo homer of his own to stretch the lead to two, where it would stay. Despite the homer being the first in a Braves uniform for the 35-year-old, he's been a productive addition in the early going, batting .289/.357/.447 with three steals to go with the homer.

Jose Ramirez enjoyed a monster game against the Tigers on Saturday, finishing 4-for-4 with two home runs, six RBI and three runs scored in the Indians' 13-6 win.

A pair of three-run bombs did the damage, the first off Tigers ace Justin Verlander in the first inning and then again off reliever Anibal Sanchez in the eighth. He also had a pair of singles and a walk, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances. Few are hotter than the 24-year-old, who is now 9-for-13 in his past three games. The great stretch has raised his overall line to .341/.404/.610 through the season's first two weeks.

Logan Forsythe left Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks with right hamstring tightness.

Enrique Hernandez replaced him at second base to begin the fifth inning. Forsythe was having a terrific night before his injury, going 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. He's gone 10-for-23 over his last six games to raise his average from .158 all the way to .310. Until the D'Backs provide an update, consider him day-to-day.

George Springer homered, drove in two runs and scored three times as the Astros came back to beat the A's 10-6 on Saturday.

Springer had just one hit in the game but he made it count, swatting a two-run jack off reliever Sean Doolittle as part of a four-run eighth inning. His six homers are tied for most in the American League. He's also among the league leaders in RBI (11) and runs scored (10) atop a potent Astros lineup. It'd be nice if he stole more bases, but that's about the only complaint we'll register against the 27-year-old.

Jacob deGrom allowed two earned runs, four hits and a walk with a career-high 13 strikeouts over seven innings in a no-decision Saturday in Miami.

DeGrom was sharp, but manager Terry Collins elected to lift the starter after 97 pitches in favor of his bullpen. Fernando Salas proceeded to cough up a three-run bomb in the bottom of the eighth to Christian Yelich, making the home run sculpture light up at Marlins Park. Collins cited the fact the team has three pitchers coming off surgery with his being careful with deGrom and not allowing him to go out for the eighth inning.

Starling Marte went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base in an 8-7 win over the Cubs on Saturday.

Games like this are why you spend an early draft pick on the Pirates' center fielder. He can help teams in every category with his ability to hit for power, contact and speed. He drove in a run with a single in the third inning, then cracked a solo homer in the sixth. Marte now owns a .289 batting average with two homers, seven runs, seven RBI and two steals through 11 games.

Tyler Chatwood mowed through the Giants on Saturday, allowing two hits in a complete-game, 5-0 shutout.

Chatwood issued one walk and struck out four, needing an economical 105 pitches to put away a Giants lineup sans Buster Posey and Brandon Belt. It was a drastic change from his first two starts, both losses, in which he gave up four runs in each. It's a wonder what nine shutout innings will do for your earned run average, dropping it from 6.35 to 3.54 after Saturday. Chatwood will have an opportunity to repeat the feat -- or the Giants will have a chance at revenge -- when the two teams meet in Colorado next weekend.

Marcus Semien’s MRI revealed a bone contusion on his right wrist.

Semien will go for a CT scan on Monday. It’s an injury Semien has been dealing with since the end of spring training and might explain his sluggish start (.171 AVG with no homers in 35 at-bats). While the initial diagnosis looks good, there’s no guarantee Semien will avoid the disabled list. Adam Rosales started in his place Saturday against Houston.
Apr 15 - 9:36 PM

Carlos Correa left Saturday’s game against the Athletics with a hand contusion.

He exited after taking a pitch off his hand in the ninth inning. Correa gave fantasy owners a scare for a minute, but his X-rays came back negative and it looks like he’s just dealing with a bruise. Pitcher Mike Fiers actually had to pinch-run for Correa because the Astros were out of position players. Alex Bregman would likely fill in at shortstop if Correa sits on Sunday.
Apr 15 - 9:27 PM

Rays placed RHP Jake Odorizzi on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Odorizzi took a comebacker off his leg in a start against Toronto last week and aggravated the injury Saturday against the Red Sox. Chase Whitley will absorb his spot on the active roster. Erasmo Ramirez logged four innings after Odorizzi’s departure on Saturday and could be a candidate to fill his slot in the starting rotation.
Apr 15 - 9:20 PM

Updating an earlier report, Jarrett Parker suffered a broken clavicle in Saturday’s loss to the Rockies.

In layman’s terms, he broke his collarbone. Parker injured himself crashing into the wall for an incredible catch to rob D.J. LeMahieu in the fourth inning. The Giants haven’t given a timetable for his return but it’s safe to say he won’t be playing anytime soon. In his absence, left field will likely be occupied by some combination of Chris Marrero, Gorkys Hernandez and Aaron Hill.
