Yankees re-signed SS Brendan Ryan to a two-year, $5 million contract.

The deal has a club and player option for 2016 that, with incentives, could bring the total value of the pact to $10 million. Ryan hit .220/.258/.305 in his short time with the Yankees toward the end of 2013, but it's his defense that makes him a valuable commodity. The Yankees will likely try to protect the aging Derek Jeter's ankles, so the 31-year-old Ryan should see his fair share of time at shortstop in 2014. Still, his offense makes him a nonentity in fantasy.

Nationals prospect Trea Turner is starting in center field Monday with Triple-A Syracuse, reports Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post.

The Nationals are happy with Danny Espinosa at shortstop, so the club is apparently exploring an alternative route to get Turner to the majors. Turner has never played the outfield in pro ball, but he's athletic enough to be a quick study. Nationals center fielders (mostly Ben Revere and Michael A. Taylor) have combined for a major-league worst .587 OPS this season, so this situation is worth watching.

The Mets have not committed to Steven Matz (elbow) starting Wednesday against the Nationals.

Matz has been experiencing some elbow tightness of late and while he downplayed the issue after his most recent start on Friday against the Braves, the Mets were concerned enough to send him back to the doctor. There should be more clarity on the situation Tuesday, but fantasy owners should have a backup plan in mind this week.

Nationals RHP prospect Lucas Giolito will be called up from Double-A Harrisburg to make his major league debut Tuesday against the Mets.

Manager Dusty Baker said "he's ready for the task." We think so too. Baseball's consensus No. 1 prospect has pitched to a steady 3.17 ERA over 14 starts for Double-A Harrisburg this year while mixing in 100 mph heat and a devastating power curve. The 21-year-old will take Stephen Strasburg's spot in the starting rotation. If he's as good as advertised, Giolito could be in the majors for good. Make sure to scoop Giolito up in your league if he's still available.

Three Cubs scouts attended the Yankees' series against Minnesota this past weekend.

They were scouting the dominant bullpen trio of Aroldis Chapman, Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances. The Cubs have been linked to Chapman and Miller for a while so their presence in New York this weekend shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The Yankees have incentive to trade both, especially with Chapman headed for free agency this winter. With that said, the Yankees probably won't pull the trigger unless they're completely out of the AL East race. Right now they trail first-place Baltimore by 7.5 games and are 2.5 games behind Toronto for the final Wild Card spot.

Clayton Kershaw was treated for minor back discomfort after pitching Sunday against the Pirates.

Kershaw endured his worst start of the season on Sunday but manager Dave Roberts insists his ineffectiveness had nothing to do with his ailing back. Roberts added that the injury has been an "off-and-on issue." Kershaw put in his usual post-start workout Monday morning and isn't expected to miss any time. He's in line to pitch Friday against the Rockies.

Seung Hwan Oh warmed up in the eighth inning Sunday against the Mariners but wasn't needed after the Cardinals scored two runs in the ninth.

The implication is that Oh would have been manager Mike Matheny's first choice had their been a save situation. The Cardinals have gone to a closer by committee in the wake of Trevor Rosenthal's recent struggles. Oh has enjoyed a brilliant rookie campaign, contributing 14 holds and a stellar 1.66 ERA over 37 appearances. Jonathan Broxton and Kevin Siegrist could also get looks in the ninth inning but Oh needs to be owned in all formats.

Gregory Polanco (leg) is not in the Pirates' lineup Monday against the Dodgers.

Polanco hasn't been in the lineup the past three days while battling left leg discomfort, though he did strike out in a pinch-hitting appearance Sunday night. Utility man Sean Rodriguez is getting the nod in right field. He'll bat seventh against Dodgers lefty Scott Kazmir. Polanco remains day-to-day.

The Mariners are "leaning toward" having Taijuan Walker (foot) start Thursday against the Orioles.

He was skipped last time through the rotation after being diagnosed with tendinitis in the arch of his right foot. Walker threw a bullpen session on Sunday and reported no issues. The right-hander holds a respectable 3.45 ERA in 14 starts this year. Unfortunately he's been plagued by a severe lack of run support and only has three victories.

Corey Seager is getting the day off Monday against the Pirates.

It's a quick turnaround for the Dodgers, who are playing at 12:35 PM ET after a night game on Sunday. Seager has appeared in all but one game this season with his last day off coming on April 15. The 22-year-old has contributed All-Star numbers this year with 16 HR and a .298 batting average in 299 at-bats. Chris Taylor will handle shortstop duties Monday while batting eighth against Bucs left-hander Francisco Liriano.

D.J. LeMahieu left Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks with a bruised left knee.

He came out in the sixth inning after going 0-for-1 with a pair of walks. LeMaheiu landed awkwardly on his knee after diving for a single by Paul Goldschmidt. He'll have an MRI on Monday. Daniel Descalso replaced LeMahieu at second base and will probably start there during his absence. LeMahieu's .327 average is tied for third-best in the National League.

Gerrit Cole (triceps) threw off a mound on Sunday for the first time since going on the disabled list.

Pitching coach Ray Searage said Cole was "very, very good" and actually had to reel him in a bit so he wouldn't re-injure himself. The right-hander threw 15 fastballs while emphasizing timing and a consistent delivery. He's expected to throw two more bullpen sessions during the Pirates' upcoming road trip. After that Cole will be reevaluated in hopes of beginning a rehab assignment. There's no timetable for his return.
