CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Mariners are close to a deal with free agent Willie Bloomquist.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says it's a two-year deal worth between $5 million and $6 million total. Bloomquist missed a large chunk of the 2013 season with a left hand injury and posted a pedestrian .727 OPS in 48 games for Arizona when he wasn't on the disabled list. He'll function as a utilityman next summer for Seattle.

Cardinals transferred RHP Trevor Rosenthal from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Rosenthal is officially done for the season and could be facing major elbow surgery. Look for the Cardinals to announce a diagnosis soon. Dr. George Paletta and Dr. Neal ElAttrache have both reviewed his elbow scans and will collaborate on the next course of action. Rosenthal had reclaimed the closer role in St. Louis before injuring his right arm last week.

Steven Matz underwent season-ending surgery on his left elbow Wednesday.

The procedure was designed to reposition a compressed nerve in the elbow. Matz finishes the 2017 campaign with a highly disappointing 6.08 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and 48/19 K/BB ratio in 13 starts covering 66 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw is expected to be ready for Opening Day in 2018.

Carlos Santana (back) remains out of the Indians' lineup Wednesday versus the Red Sox.

Santana exited Monday's series opener after experiencing tightness in his lower back. It's a day-to-day situation. Edwin Encarnacion is at first base and Yandy Diaz will DH on Wednesday night against Boston left-hander Drew Pomeranz.
Aug 23 - 2:56 PM

Royals manager Ned Yost said closer Kelvin Herrera (forearm) could be available on Wednesday.

Herrera was pulled from a save opportunity Tuesday night against the Rockies after experiencing tightness in his right forearm, but Yost told KCSP (610 AM) on Wednesday morning that it's nothing serious -- clarifying that the discomfort was actually closer to Herrera's wrist. Scott Alexander wound up finishing Tuesday's victory for his first career save.
Aug 23 - 2:45 PM

Indians placed 2B Jason Kipnis on the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain.

This hamstring issue has been lingering for months and Kipnis reaggravated it Tuesday night against the Red Sox. He'll probably be sidelined until sometime in mid-September. Jose Ramirez figures to handle the majority of starts at second base, with Giovanny Urshela taking over at third. Erik Gonzalez has been called up from Triple-A Columbus to help out on the infield.
Aug 23 - 2:35 PM

Red Sox placed OF Jackie Bradley on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained left thumb.

Bradley's left thumb got bent back awkwardly as he slid into home plate on Tuesday night in Cleveland. X-rays came back negative, but an MRI taken Wednesday morning in Boston revealed the sprain. It's unclear at this point how long he might be sidelined. Andrew Benintendi is likely to take over in center field, with Chris Young and Brock Holt sharing time in left.
Aug 23 - 2:19 PM

Kris Bryant (hand) is absent from the Cubs' starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Reds.

Bryant took a pitch off his left hand in the ninth inning Tuesday, but X-rays turned up negative and it sounds like he could return for Thursday's series finale in Cincinnati. Tommy La Stella is starting at third base and batting sixth Wednesday versus Reds right-hander Asher Wojciechowski.
Aug 23 - 2:03 PM

Mariners activated RHP David Phelps from the 10-day disabled list.

Phelps made it through a 20-pitch simulated inning Monday without issue and will be available out of the Mariners' bullpen on Wednesday night in Atlanta. The setup man missed a little over two weeks with a right elbow impingement.
Aug 23 - 1:32 PM

Marcus Semien (wrist) is back in the Athletics' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Orioles.

Semien sat out Tuesday after making an early exit from Monday's series opener in Baltimore when he irritated the scar tissue around his surgically-repaired right wrist, but the 26-year-old is starting at shortstop and batting second Wednesday versus Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy. Semien has slashed .249/.333/.381 with five home runs and seven stolen bases in 51 games this season.

Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday in the Gulf Coast League.

Minor league seasons are coming to an end, so the Marlins will have to get creative as they bring Chen along in his rehab. The 32-year-old left-hander has been on the disabled list since May 5 with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. He may make a start or two for Miami before the end of the MLB regular season, but it's definitely not something to count on.
Aug 23 - 11:10 AM

David Wright (shoulder, back) started at DH and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his rehab debut Tuesday with High-A St. Lucie.

It was the first live game Wright had played at any level this season. "There's still quite a bit to go to where I want to be, but it was a good first step," he told reporters afterward. "[My back and shoulder] felt pretty good. There are going to be some challenges ahead, I'm sure ... Certainly sooner rather than later I want to see some results, have some better at-bats. It's not going to come overnight." The veteran third baseman is aiming to join the Mets for the final few weeks of the 2017 regular season.
