Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says the Athletics "never came remotely close" to trading outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported earlier this week that the A's and Diamondbacks had discussed a trade revolving around Cespedes, but those talks didn't progress very far. Oakland has been making upgrades this winter and moving Cespedes would only hurt the cause. The 28-year-old Cuban slugger has a .796 OPS, 49 home runs and 162 RBI through his first 264 major league games.

J.T. Realmuto will bat leadoff Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

It's an outside-the-box choice as the Marlins try to fill the void left by the suspended Dee Gordon. But Realmuto has some speed and is batting .312/.329/.455 through 20 games this season. It's worth a shot, especially with lefty Patrick Corbin on the mound.

Reds activated LHP John Lamb from the 15-day disabled list.

Lamb will start Tuesday in place of Jon Moscot, who has been dealing with a shoulder issue. Acquired from the Royals in the Johnny Cueto deal last July, the 25-year-old Lamb was forced to begin this season on the disabled list following back surgery in December. He had an ugly 9.22 ERA through three rehab starts in Triple-A, but he had a 12/3 K/BB ratio in 13 2/3 innings and averaged 10.5 K/9 over 10 starts with the Reds late last year. He's worth grabbing in NL-only formats.
May 3 - 3:26 PM

Orioles placed SS J.J. Hardy on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 2, with a left foot fracture.

Hardy suffered the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot in the fourth inning of Sunday's game. He's expected to miss around 6-8 weeks. Manny Machado is an option to fill in at shortstop during Hardy's absence, though Ryan Flaherty is getting the first start there Tuesday. Chris Davis and Pedro Alvarez could see time at third base if Machado makes the move to shortstop.
May 3 - 3:12 PM

Jason Heyward (wrist) is out of the starting lineup again on Tuesday against the Pirates.

The struggling Heyward is dealing with a sore right wrist, but hopes to return as soon as Wednesday. Kris Bryant will play right field Tuesday while Jorge Soler will start in left and bat second. Javier Baez will play third base.
May 3 - 2:41 PM

Tigers activated C James McCann from the 15-day disabled list.

McCann, out since April 11 with a sprained ankle, went 2-for-15 with two RBI during a minor league rehab stint. Jarrod Saltalamacchia has swung the bat well during his absence, but he'll presumably shift into a diminished role now that McCann is healthy.
May 3 - 2:16 PM

Red Sox activated RHP Carson Smith from the 15-day disabled list.

Smith, who began the season on the disabled list with a strained flexor tendon, was cleared to join the Red Sox after making it through two minor league rehab games. The 26-year-old was acquired from the Mariners over the winter and is capable of being a dominant set-up man if healthy.
May 3 - 12:20 PM

Pablo Sandoval needs reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder, per ESPN's Buster Olney.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reported Monday night that the surgery is "significant" and the odds are against Sandoval playing this season, so Olney's report appears to jibe with that. The 29-year-old has received all sorts of criticism for his level of fitness, but his situation is much more complicated. The big question is what sort of future Sandoval has in Boston. He still has three guaranteed years (and $58 million) on his contract. The Red Sox will have the DH spot open after David Ortiz retires, so that could be where Sandoval slots in if healthy in 2017. A change of scenery might be the best for all involved, but the Red Sox would have to pick up most of his remaining contract for anyone to take a chance on him.
May 3 - 8:52 AM

Danny Valencia (hamstring) went 0-for-3 on Monday in his first minor league rehab game with High-A Stockton.

Valencia, out since April 20 with a left hamstring strain, also played seven innings at third base. He's expected to be activated when he's first eligible on Friday. Valencia was batting .294/.345/.353 over 14 games prior to the injury.
May 3 - 8:29 AM

Twins activated 3B Trevor Plouffe from the 15-day disabled list.

Plouffe, out since April 17 with a right intercostal strain, was cleared to return after playing a pair of minor league rehab games. Eduardo Nunez has swung the bat well while filling in at third base, but he's now likely headed back to a bench role.
May 3 - 12:19 AM

Jose Berrios won for the first time in the majors after allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings Monday against the Astros.

Berrios issued five walks to go along with the two homers he allowed, but the homers came with the bases empty. It's still not ideal that he threw just 54 strikes among his 96 pitches, but his stuff is good enough that he'll be able to get away with that kind of thing sometimes. He struck out eight of the 23 batters he faced tonight.
May 3 - 12:02 AM

Kolten Wong finally notched his first extra-base hit of the season Monday, smacking a two-run homer in Monday's win over the Phillies.

Wong looked awful in striking out in his first two plate appearances, but he scorched the ball on a lineout to center field in his third at-bat and then went deep in his fourth trip to the dish. He's got an ugly .233/.304/.283 batting line on the season, but perhaps this will get Wong going.
