Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Nationals are shopping infielder Danny Espinosa.

Espinosa struggled through injuries this past season, both in the majors and the minors. While his plate discipline is unlikely to improve, he could make for a decent buy-low opportunity. Anthony Rendon has emerged as the starting second baseman, so Espinosa will likely function as a utility infielder if he remains in Washington.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Ian Desmond is headed to the Rockies.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports says the deal is worth $70 million while Joel Sherman reports that it's a five-year contract. Jim Bowden of ESPN.com reports there's an option for a sixth year which could bring the total outlay to $83 million. Alrighty then, Rockies. It's an unexpected fit, for a number of reasons. The Rockies already have a surplus of outfielders, so this potentially opens the door for Charlie Blackmon to be traded. Rosenthal also notes that Desmond will likely split time between first base and the outfield. It should be stated that the Rockies will have to give up the No. 11 overall pick (the highest unprotected pick) in 2017 to sign Desmond since he rejected a qualifying offer from the Rangers. That's not ideal. On the bright side, he'll be in a fantastic spot for fantasy value.
Dec 7 - 11:19 AM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Marlins have a deal with left-hander Jeff Locke, pending a physical.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears that it's a one-year deal worth around $3 million. Locke was non-tendered by the Pirates last week posting a 5.44 ERA over 127 1/3 innings in 2016, but he's had better results in the past and it's worth noting that he'll be reunited with Jim Benedict in Miami. It's a reasonable gamble in a weak market for starting pitching.
Dec 7 - 10:52 AM

Marly Rivera of ESPN reports that the Rangers and Indians are both still in talks with free agent slugger Edwin Encarnacion.

The Indians have only emerged as a possibility after Encarnacion's market has been slow to develop, but the Rangers have been a great fit all along. Similar to his time in Toronto, he could potentially split time between first base and designated hitter in Texas. The big question is how much Encarnacion's camp will be willing to compromise in regard to years and dollars. As Jeff Passan reported early Wednesday morning, Encarnacion's camp is in "wait-and-see" mode as they try to find the right fit.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports hears that "there's an increasing sense" among teams in the elite-closer market that Kenley Jansen and Aroldis Chapman could be close to making decisions on where to sign.

It's crunch time in negotiations. We've already heard that Chapman reportedly has a $92 million offer on the table from someone. Jansen's deal should fall in a similar range. The Marlins, Yankees, Dodgers, and Nationals are all linked here in some form or fashion.
Dec 7 - 9:17 AM

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals "are one of several teams that are believed to have approached" the White Sox about center fielder Adam Eaton.

The Cardinals are looking for help in their outfield and have emphasized upgrading their seeped and athleticism this winter, so Dexter Fowler is at the top of their wish list among free agents and they have checked in on Ian Desmond, but they are also eyeing the trade market. In addition to a possible pursuit of Eaton, Goold hears that the Cardinals have talked to the Royals about Lorenzo Cain and that the Rockies are willing to trade Charlie Blackmon for a "high return." The Cardinals have talked with the Rockies in the past about Blackmon, so it's possible they revisit those talks now. Eaton is signed through 2021 on a team-friendly deal, so the White Sox don't have to move him, but he would be another significant chip to get their rebuild effort moving along.
Dec 7 - 8:25 AM

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the White Sox are already engaged in serious talks with several teams about left-hander Jose Quintana.

After moving their ace Chris Sale to the Red Sox on Tuesday, it's no surprise that they are seeing what is out there for one of the most underrated pitchers in the game. Nightengale names the Nationals and Astros among the interested clubs, but FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Washington is not interested in adding another starter. Either way, the White Sox shouldn't have a problem finding a match given the weak market for starting pitching.
Dec 7 - 8:15 AM

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Cubs and Royals have agreed to a Wade Davis-Jorge Soler swap, pending medicals.

It's not a done deal, but assuming the Cubs don't have any issues with Davis' medical records, it could be announced Wednesday morning. On the surface, it's not an overwhelming return for Davis, but he only has one year remaining on his contract and he's coming off a season where he was bothered by some forearm issues. Still, there's no questioning his ability if healthy. The 31-year-old owns a 1.18 ERA over the last three seasons and will immediately take over the closer role in Chicago. As for Soler, his star has faded a bit over the past two seasons, but there's huge power potential here and the Royals will happily take a chance on him.
Dec 7 - 8:05 AM

According to Chris Cotillo of SB Nation, "the seriousness of the talks between Mark Trumbo [and] the Mariners was overblown."

Cotillo hears there still might be a fit, but ESPN's Jim Bowden tweeted Tuesday night that the two sides were engaged in "serious" contract negotiations and that report now sounds mostly false. Trumbo is said to be looking for a contract in the $75-80 million range, after rejecting a four-year, $52-55 million offer from the Orioles a couple weeks ago. He's probably not going to meet that high asking price despite leading the major leagues in homers in 2016. There are just too many limitations with him defensively, and he owns a .303 career on-base percentage.
Dec 7 - 12:48 AM

Fernando Rodney has agreed to a one-year, $2.75 million contract with the Diamondbacks, per Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Heyman says there are "many, many" performance-based incentives included in the deal. Rodney posted a rough 5.89 ERA over his final 36 2/3 innings this past season with the Marlins, but he got off to a good start in San Diego and might have a little something left in the tank as he heads to the desert. The plan is for him to open the 2017 season as the Diamondbacks' closer. Good luck with that.
Dec 7 - 12:02 AM

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Rangers have re-signed outfielder Carlos Gomez.

He'll get a one-year, $11.5 million contract, per FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. It's a bit surprising Gomez couldn't find a multi-year deal in this weak free agent market, but his dreadful tenure with Houston likely scared teams away. Gomez batted .284/.362/.543 with eight homers and five steals in 33 games down the stretch this past season with Texas, after getting released by the Astros in early August. He will probably open the 2017 campaign as the Rangers' starting center fielder.
Dec 6 - 11:48 PM

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, one team has offered $92 million to Aroldis Chapman.

And there's a decent chance his price tag climbs even higher given all the interest. Among those in pursuit: the Yankees, Nationals, and Marlins. Chapman, 28, registered a 1.55 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 90/18 K/BB ratio in 58 innings this summer between the Yankees and Cubs before helping to bring the north side of Chicago its first World Series championship since 1908.
