ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand says there are eight teams with interest in free agent Johan Santana.

The Mets, Yankees, Twins, Rays, Orioles, Royals, Brewers and Pirates are believed to be the eight. Santana is coming off major shoulder surgery and missed the entire 2013 season, but he's only 34 years old and may have some miles left in the tank. He seems likely to sign a one-year, incentives-driven contract this winter.

Chase Headley is not in the Padres' lineup Wednesday due to a right biceps strain.

It's being called a mild strain, and the third baseman is day-to-day. It's unclear when he sustained the injury. First baseman Yonder Alonso was taking ground balls at third during batting practice before Wednesday's game, so he may see some time at the hot corner in a pinch if Headley misses any more time.

Angels placed OF Kole Calhoun on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle.

Calhoun rolled the ankle in the 11th inning of Tuesday's game, and it was immediately clear he was headed for a DL stint. Calhoun was on crutches in the clubhouse after the game, saying the ankle "hurt real bad." Hopefully it's just a 15-day thing and won't require a longer stay. Brennan Boesch was recalled to take his roster spot.

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said Taijuan Walker will be shut down for two weeks with a right shoulder impingement.

Walker was scratched from his scheduled rehab start Tuesday due to the setback. It was supposed to be the final rehab start before he rejoined the big club, but that's gone by the wayside. Even when he does resume throwing, he'll need to build his arm strength back up before being recalled. At this point, his return date is up in the air.

Bryce Harper was scratched from the Nationals' lineup Wednesday due to left quad tightness.

The Nationals say he's been dealing with tightness in the quad since Friday. It was bad enough that he was removed from Monday's game, so it's not an situation that should be taken too lightly. At this point he seems to be day-to-day, but the team may give him more rest over the next few days to get his legs right.

Denard Span (concussion) could return from the concussion disabled list on Saturday.

Span first has to make it through rehab games on Thursday and Friday. He was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list April 12 after a collision with Braves infielder Dan Uggla. All reports so far have been good.
Apr 16 - 5:21 PM

Doug Fister (lat) headed to extended spring training in Viera, Florida on Wednesday.

Fister will begin working on a five-day throwing schedule, beginning with two simulated innings on Thursday. He'll then throw three simulated innings five days after, and a rehab assignment could follow that workout. Fister should join the Nationals around early May and will be a front-line fantasy starter once he is activated.
Apr 16 - 5:18 PM

Craig Kimbrel (shoulder) threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and declared himself "ready."

According to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, manager Fredi Gonzalez was "noncommittal" about using Kimbrel on Wednesday night because of the cold weather in Philadelphia. Kimbrel has been unavailable the past two games with mild shoulder soreness.
Apr 16 - 4:58 PM

Joe Kelly has been diagnosed with a left hamstring strain and is headed back to St. Louis for further tests.

Kelly suffered the injury Wednesday in Milwaukee while trying to beat out a groundball to first base. He is likely to be placed on the 15-day disabled list, and the Cardinals will now have to dip into some of their starting pitching depth. Carlos Martinez could be an option, but Tyler Lyons started for Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday and is probably the more logical short-term fill-in candidate because Martinez has been making appearances in a major league setup role.
Apr 16 - 4:30 PM

George Springer is batting second in his major league debut on Wednesday night against the Royals.

Houston will throw the ultra-talented young outfielder right into the fire. Springer was batting .353/.459/.647 with three home runs in 13 games this year at Triple-A Oklahoma City and is a must-have in all standard fantasy leagues. The 24-year-old compiled a .959 OPS, 65 homers, 85 steals, and 207 RBI in 284 minor league games.
Apr 16 - 4:23 PM

Wily Peralta held the Cardinals to one run over 6 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 5-1 Brewers win.

The dominant performance pushed Milwaukee to an 11-4 record and a two-game lead over the Cardinals in the National League Central standings. Peralta had his sinker and slider working, fanning three batters and scattering six hits over his 6 1/3 frames. He issued just one walk. The 24-year-old right-hander will bring a 2-0 record and 1.96 ERA into his next start at home against the Padres. That's a juicy fantasy matchup.
Apr 16 - 4:19 PM

Mike Napoli (finger) is not in the Red Sox starting lineup Wednesday night against the White Sox.

Napoli suffered a dislocated left ring finger Tuesday after jamming his hand against the second base bag on a head-first slide. He's expected to avoid the disabled list but may need a few more days off. Daniel Nava is starting at first base Wednesday in Chicago.
