Giants signed RHP Andrew Carignan to a minor league contract.

Carignan needed Tommy John surgery in mid-2012 and then underwent a procedure to repair labrum damage in his shoulder this past summer. "I’m just looking for an opportunity to get out there," Carignan told the Norwich Bulletin about his new deal with San Francisco. "It’s been a rough couple years with those injuries and the rehab. I was a free agent after last year so I was looking for an opportunity and the Giants came and gave me one."

Garrett Richards left Wednesday's start against the Red Sox with a potentially serious knee injury.

Richards was covering first base when his knee buckled, and he remained on the ground for several minutes. He was eventually carted off the field, an ominous sign. Richards had allowed five hits and two runs in his 1 2/3 innings of work before exiting. The Angels should update his status soon, but it would be a devastating blow if he's lost for a substantial period of time.

Zack Greinke (elbow) had his scheduled start on Thursday pushed back to Saturday.

Greinke has been dealing with some elbow tenderness in recent weeks -- he underwent an MRI on the elbow two weeks ago, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has downplayed the seriousness of the ailment, and it's promising that he will at least make another start shortly after the originally scheduled one. Clayton Kershaw will move up in the rotation to start Thursday in Greinke's place.

Brandon Belt (concussion) was told following an exam in Pittsburgh that he's still at least 2-3 weeks away from being cleared for doing any physical activity.

Belt initially suffered the concussion on July 19 and returned to the disabled list earlier this month after he experienced recurring symptoms. The Giants and fantasy owners can't count on much from him the rest of the way.

Buster Posey is out of Wednesday's lineup against the Cubs after his left hip flared up.

The issue affected his at-bats on Tuesday, so he has been getting treatment all day Wednesday. He's available off the bench and the hope is that he'll be ready to go Thursday. Consider him day-to-day.

Starlin Castro has been scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Giants due to a family emergency.

It's not known whether he'll require an extended absence. Javier Baez will slide over and make his first major league start at shortstop. Meanwhile, Chris Valaika will play second base.

Aroldis Chapman (shoulder) expects to be available out of the Reds' bullpen on Wednesday.

Chapman walked all four batters he faced on Sunday and has been sidelined in the days since because of an achy shoulder. But the hard-throwing left-hander threw a side session on Wednesday afternoon and reported no issues. The struggling Cincinnati bullpen needs its best weapon on Wednesday night in St. Louis.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw a successful 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon.

Tanaka mixed in fastballs, curveballs, sliders, and even a few splitters while reporting no discomfort in his right elbow. "It went well, but it was actually my first time throwing breaking balls –- something other than fastballs –- in the bullpen, so I felt it was a little bit rusty," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I’ll have to brush that up a little bit." The right-hander was diagnosed in early July with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, but he is aiming to return to a major league mound sometime in September.

Jose Bautista finished 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Brewers.

Bautista doubled in the third inning and then slugged a three-run shot in the Jays' five-run sixth inning. Toronto managed 15 hits in all against rookie Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson and the Milwaukee bullpen. Bautista is batting .290/.406/.512 with 24 home runs, 24 doubles, and 77 RBI in 121 games this season.

Yadier Molina (thumb) took light swings on Wednesday.

It was far from an intensive workout, but those were the first swings that Molina had attempted since tearing a ligament in his right thumb July 9 on a slide into third base. He has already been catching bullpen sessions and taking infield practice, and the hope is that he'll be ready to rejoin the Cardinals around the second week of September. A.J. Pierzynski and Tony Cruz will continue to fill in.

Michael Cuddyer (hamstring) expects to return Friday.

Cuddyer is out of the Rockies' starting lineup again on Wednesday due to hamstring soreness, but it's not a major injury. The Rockies are off on Thursday and then begin a three-game series with the Marlins on Friday night.

Nationals manager Matt Williams said Wednesday that he expects Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) to return from the disabled list "sometime in September."

It will probably be late-September. Zimmerman is still limited to underwater treadmill workouts and there's no timetable yet for him to resume baseball-related activities. The veteran third baseman has been sidelined since late July with a Grade 3 right hamstring strain.
