The Diamondbacks "cannot be ruled out as major players" for Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Rosenthal reports that the Snakes were open to offering free agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo a seven-year contract in the $140 million range. Because the club acquired Mark Trumbo via trade and Choo signed with Texas, Arizona now ostensibly has big money available that has already been approved by ownership. And, as Rosenthal notes, the Snakes haven't had much success in trade talks: "The D-backs, meanwhile, earlier tried to trade for Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija, but considered the asking price to be too high, sources said. They are reluctant to make a run at Rays left-hander David Price for the same reason, as well as Price's rising salaries in his final two seasons before becoming a free agent."

Julio Urias earned his first major league win Tuesday, limiting the Brewers to two runs over six innings as the Dodgers held on to win 6-5.

Urias gave up just two hits but walked six while striking out six as well. The 19-year-old has gotten progressively better over his seven starts, having allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last five outings. He's now got a 4.09 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 41/15 K/BB ratio over 33 innings in the bigs. He'll try to make it a winning streak Sunday against the Rockies.

Lucas Giolito had to leave his major league debut early after a rain delay but held the Mets scoreless over four innings Tuesday in a 5-0 victory.

It's a shame, as Giolito had allowed just one hit (a bloop single) and had been efficient through four frames, throwing only 45 pitches. He issued two walks and recorded one strikeout, sitting around 95 mph while featuring a hammer curveball. The Nationals didn't promise Giolito anything beyond tonight's outing, but he's surely going to get the ball this weekend again against the Reds.

Bryce Harper doubled and ripped a two-run homer in Tuesday's win over the Mets.

Harper lined a Jerry Blevins offering into the right-field bullpen with one out in the fifth inning. It was his 16th longball of the season but just his third in June. The reigning National League MVP is sporting a disappointing .258 average but has made up for it and then some with a .403 on-base percentage.

Jon Lester had to settle for a no-decision but was excellent Tuesday, holding the Reds to one run over 7 1/3 innings in a 7-2 extra-innings victory.

Lester held the Reds off the scoreboard until Billy Hamilton slugged a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning. He recorded only four strikeouts but wound up allowing just three hits and one walk on the night. Lester lost out on a win when Hector Rondon blew a save, but it was another stellar outing in what has been an excellent season. He'll bring a 2.03 ERA into New York against the Mets on Sunday.

Matt Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored to help the Cardinals top the Royals 8-4 on Tuesday.

Carpenter took Royals starter Yordano Ventura deep in the fifth inning for a solo shot, his 14th of the year. The dinger vaulted Carpenter to the top of the slugging percentage leaderboard in the National League, a distinction few would guess belongs to the 30-year-old. It's been that kind of year for Carpenter, whose 54 runs scored are second-most in the NL and who also leads the league with a 1.012 OPS. Carpenter is hitting .300/.420/.592 with 49 RBI overall.

Lorenzo Cain was diagnosed with a strained hamstring that forced his early exit from Tuesday's game.

He'll be re-evaluated by team doctors on Wednesday before determining a course of action. Even if he avoids a trip to the disabled list, expect him to miss a game or two. Look for an update after Wednesday's exam.

Zack Greinke was forced to leave Tuesday's start against the Phillies due to tightness in his left oblique.

Oblique injuries can be tricky and tend to linger, so it's hard to speculate how much time, if any, Greinke could miss. It's likely that the team could play it safe and skip a start or two heading into the All-Star break.

Brian Dozier went 3-for-4 with two home runs and all four RBI as the Twins blanked the White Sox 4-0 on Tuesday.

Dozier now has four homers in his last three games and seven in the month of June, a month in which he's hitting .361 with 19 RBI and 18 runs scored. During a 10-game hitting streak, the 29-year-old has raised his average from .227 to .259. Reports of his death were certainly exaggerated, and Dozier now has 12 home runs on the year to go with that .259/.341/.463 line.

Joc Pederson was removed from Tuesday's game against the Brewers with a right shoulder injury.

Pederson slammed into the outfield wall after making a ridiculous catch to rob Chris Carter of extra bases. The Dodgers should provide an update on his status after he's examined.
Jun 28 - 11:10 PM

Nick Castellanos hit one of three home runs for the Tigers in a seven-run inning in Tuesday's comeback win over the Marlins.

The Tigers entered the bottom of the fifth down 3-0 and were getting dominated by Adam Conley, but Conley suddenly then fell apart. Castellanos followed dingers by Jose Iglesias and Miguel Cabrera with a homer of his own, completing the seven-run frame. The third baseman struggled in the first half of June but is batting .333 over his last 11 games.
Jun 28 - 11:03 PM

Giancarlo Stanton went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers.

Stanton got the scoring going in the second inning with a laser over the center field wall to plate two. He drove in another run with a single in the fifth. Stanton's slump looks to be in the rear view mirror, as he's now batting .400 with three longballs over his last 10 contests.
