Nationals signed INF Jamey Carroll to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The agreement was first reported by Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish and then confirmed by FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Carroll will serve as a utilityman in 2014 for the Nationals as long as he shows that he has something left in spring training. He turns 40 years old next month and batted just .211/.267/.251 last season.

Randal Grichuk went 2-for-5 with an RBI double, triple and a run scored as the Cardinals thumped the Nationals 9-4 on Saturday.

Grichuk had two of the team's seven extra-base hits against Gio Gonzalez and company, including an RBI double in the fifth inning. Grichuk now has four multi-hit games in his last five starts, raising his average to .237 with a .755 OPS. If any impatient fantasy owners jumped off the Grichuk train early, it might be time to get back on it.

Tony Cingrani struck out three over a scoreless ninth inning to close out a 7-6 win over the Brewers on Saturday.

The save was Cingrani's fourth of the season and his first in nearly two weeks. It was a reassuring showing from the southpaw, who is the team's closer for lack of a better option. Cingrani owns a 3.32 ERA and 1.38 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings to date.

Trayce Thompson was removed from Saturday's game against the Mets due to lower back soreness.

Thompson left the game in the fifth inning and was replaced by Yasiel Puig in right field. It's unclear how this will effect the 25-year-old's playing time in the coming days. Thompson has enjoyed a breakout season, hitting .274/.336/.528 with seven home runs in 116 plate appearances.
May 28 - 9:20 PM

Buster Posey hit a pair of three-run home runs as the Giants outlasted the Rockies 10-5 on Saturday.

Posey took Rockies starter Eddie Butler deep in the first inning before adding a second, three-run blast in the eighth. The two-homer game was his first of 2016, giving him seven bombs and 24 RBI overall. Posey is batting .268/.328/.470 through 45 games.

Carlos Santana went 2-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in an 11-4 drubbing of the Orioles on Saturday.

Batting atop the Indians order, Santana played the part of leadoff hitter, collecting a couple hits and stealing his third base of the season. Without much fanfare, he's now reached base safely in 10 straight games. The 30-year-old is hitting .231/.345/.438 with eight homers, 24 RBI and 24 runs scored on the year.
May 28 - 8:23 PM

Longoria connected on a Michael Pineda pitch for a two-run shot in the second inning. The homer was his ninth of the season, giving him 24 RBI and 26 runs scored. The 30-year-old is slashing .254/.302/.466 overall.
May 28 - 7:48 PM

Gordon Beckham went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored in a Braves' 7-2 win over the Marlins on Saturday.

With a couple runners on in the seventh inning, Beckham took an Edwin Jackson offering out to left-center for his second home run of the year. He also doubled and scored in the contest. Beckham has quietly been very good for the Braves in 27 games this year, batting .317/.417/.488 with 14 RBI and 11 runs scored.
May 28 - 7:33 PM

Danny Valencia went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored as the Athletics pounded the Tigers 12-3 on Saturday.

Valencia hit a solo home run off Matt Boyd, his seventh homer of the season, and the A's were able to hang nine runs on the Tigers' awful bullpen. The three-hit game raised Valencia's season line to .311/.341/.521. Designated for assignment by the Blue Jays less than a year ago, the 31-year-old has proven to be one heck of a pickup for the A's.
May 28 - 7:15 PM

Russell Martin homered and drove home three runs on Saturday as the Blue Jays rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Red Sox 10-9 on Saturday.

Martin blasted his homer off Rick Porcello in the sixth inning, pulling the Jays to within three runs at 7-4. He added an RBI single as part of a four-run uprising to tie the game in the eighth inning. His biggest contribution came with two-outs in the ninth inning, where his RBI double plated the tying run off Craig Kimbrel. Martin then came around to score the winning run on a single by Devon Travis. He finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI, raising his season slash to .194/.260/.273 to go along with three homers and 14 RBI.
May 28 - 6:33 PM

Salvador Perez suffered a quad contusion after a scary collision with third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert on Saturday.

It's unclear if Perez will avoid a trip to the disabled list, but this is nonetheless promising news for the Royals, as it appeared in real-time that the 26-year-old catcher suffered a significant knee injury. Now it's just a matter of determining the length of his absence. Perez is hitting .277/.313/.494 with seven home runs and 25 RBI in 176 plate appearances in 2016.
May 28 - 6:02 PM

Kyle Hendricks logged his second career complete game in Saturday's one-run, five-hit domination of the Phillies.

Hendricks struck out seven and didn't walk a batter in the ballgame. He made a bid for his first career shutout, until Freddy Galvis doubled, advanced on a ground ball and stole home in the ninth inning. Now 3-4 on the season, he'll carry a terrific 2.93 ERA and 0.96 WHIP into Thursday's start against the Nationals.
