Yankees designated OF Vernon Wells for assignment.

The Yanks needed to clear room on the 40-man roster, and it's no surprise Wells lost his spot because there really wasn't room for him. The 35-year-old got off to a hot start last season before fading badly, winding up with a .233/.282/.349 batting line and 11 homers over 130 games. He'll likely have to settle for a backup job somewhere.

Jacoby Ellsbury was removed from Friday's game against the Blue Jays with a strained right hamstring and is set to undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Before departing, he was in the midst of a monster evening, going 2-for-3 with a double, homer and three RBI. The dynamic outfielder is hitting .271/.328/.419 with 16 homers, 70 RBI and 39 stolen bases on the year. More should be known about his status on Saturday.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated Friday that the team could utilize a three-man rotation in the American League Division Series.

Assuming Matt Shoemaker makes it back healthy, it would presumably be he, C.J. Wilson and Jered Weaver, with Weaver getting the call to work on short rest. Given the critical importance of those games and the uncertainty surrounding the rest of the rotation, it certainly seems like a viable strategy on the Halos end.

Brandon Belt (concussion) is in the Giants starting lineup on Friday.

It marks the first time that he has been in there since early August when he suffered a recurrence of his concussion-like symptoms. It has been a season ravaged by injuries for the 26-year-old slugger, who is hitting just .237/.299/.446 with 11 homers and 24 RBI in his 52 contests.

Clayton Kershaw had one of his worst starts of the season but still notched win No. 20 Friday, allowing three runs over five frames in a 14-5 clobbering of the Cubs.

Kershaw looked off from the jump after having to wait a while to take the mound following the Dodgers’ six-run top of the first inning. He gave three runs back in the bottom of the frame and had to pitch out of jams in each of the next four innings. Kershaw gave up seven hits and walked three on the day, though he did record nine punchouts. The lefty still sports a microscopic 1.80 ERA after the less-than-sharp effort. He’ll get the Giants next week in his final start of the regular season.
Sep 19 - 6:07 PM

A.J. Ellis had a pair of two-run homers and scored three runs in Friday's victory over the Cubs.

Edwin Jackson getting chased early turned out to be a good thing for Ellis, as he took Jackson's replacement, Eric Jokisch, out of the park once in the first and again in the third. He also drew a walk. It was a big day in what has been an ugly offensive season for Ellis, as he's still hitting just .193/.328/.261.

Anibal Sanchez (pectoral) will throw a simulated game on Sunday.

Sanchez was cleared for the sim game after getting through another bullpen session Thursday with no issues. The right-hander is not expected back before the end of the regular season, but he could be a valuable relief arm to have in the playoffs.
Sep 19 - 5:59 PM

Stephen Vogt is back in the Athletics' lineup Friday.

It will be his first start in over two weeks, as Vogt has been nursing a sprained left ankle. The's A's are desperate for offense right now, so if he hits, Vogt will play even if he might not be 100 percent yet.
Sep 19 - 5:53 PM

Juan Lagares (elbow) could be out for the rest of the season.

Lagares suffered a sprained right elbow on Tuesday and has been ruled out through the next two series. It's possible he could return for the final series of the season against the Astros, but it wouldn't really make sense for the Mets to push him at that point. Lagares has hit .281/.321/.382 with four homers over 116 games this season while playing Gold Glove-level defense in center field.
Sep 19 - 5:31 PM

Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

Zimmerman went 3-for-8 with a home run while getting in some at-bats at the Nationals' spring training complex and, most importantly, apparently didn't have issues with his right hamstring. Don't expect him to play every day, but Zimmerman is obviously a nice bat for the surging Nats to welcome back.
Sep 19 - 5:17 PM

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that Alex Avila (concussion) felt "disoriented" when he tried taking some swings Thursday and Friday.

Avila is sitting out Friday for the 10th time in 17 games this month due to post-concussion issues, and it sounds like, if anything, his symptoms are getting worse. With just over a week left in the season, he might not make it back. James McCann is getting the start behind the dish Friday, and he'll share time with Bryan Holaday while Avila is out.
Sep 19 - 5:12 PM

Ryan Raburn underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Friday.

Raburn will need 6-8 weeks of rehab to recover from an operation that repaired a lateral meniscus tear. His normally offseason routine might be delayed a bit, but he'll be fine for spring training. Raburn batted just .200/.250/.297 with four home runs over 74 games for the Tribe this season.
