Blue Jays avoided arbitration with LHP Brett Cecil by agreeing to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.

Cecil was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. The left-hander thrived in his first season as a full-time reliever last year, putting up a 2.82 ERA with 70 strikeouts across 60 2/3 innings.

Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com reports that the Mets and Reds are "pretty far along" on a trade involving Jay Bruce.

Rubin says the two clubs are reviewing medicals on all the players involved, so it sounds like something could be completed soon. Acquiring Bruce means the Mets would move Curtis Granderson to center field and Juan Lagares to the bench. Bruce is under team control through 2017.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Yankees are one of five teams "aggressively pursuing" Aroldis Chapman.

The Diamondbacks are known to be one of the others clubs. The Giants have poked around on Chapman but might be out of it after trading some assets for Mike Leake. The Yankees appear dead-set on adding a closer despite already having Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances, as they've also been linked heavily to Craig Kimbrel.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman believes that the Orioles are the "best bet" to acquire Gerardo Parra from the Brewers.

It's been reported that they're also after Ben Revere, as they could use help at both corner outfield spots. Parra entered the season as a highly paid fourth outfielder but has turned into a nice trade chip for the Brewers by batting .328/.369/.517 with nine homers and nine stolen bases.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Red Sox are in the market for cost-controlled young pitching and "like Tyson Ross a lot."

They've also talked to the Indians about Carlos Carrasco. We haven't heard much from the Red Sox this week since they're out of the playoff hunt, with Crasnick saying they're "operating very quietly" in their pursuit of young rotation help. Ross, who is under team control through 2017, would certainly fit the bill.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Yankees "keep hammering away" at a trade for Craig Kimbrel.

The Astros and Red Sox have also talked to the Padres about Kimbrel, but it appears the Yankees might be the frontrunner here. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman hears that the Padres have sought shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo in a deal for Kimbrel. The Yanks had been viewing him as untouchable but might be altering that position. Acquiring Kimbrel would give New York a dynamic trio at the back-end of the bullpen, with Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller serving in setup roles.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cubs are among the teams in "ongoing dialogue" with the Indians regarding Carlos Carrasco.

The Cubs seem determined to land a cost-controlled young starter, as they've also been talking to the Padres about Tyson Ross. It would take a hefty price to get Carrasco, as he's on a team-friendly four-year, $22 million contract and has flashed ace ability. The Red Sox, Dodgers and Blue Jays are among the other clubs pursuing Carrasco, but really most any team would probably consider him at that price.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles are trying to acquire both Ben Revere and Gerardo Parra.

Picking up two corner outfielders would allow them to move Chris Davis back to first base. Revere is making $4.1 million this season and is under team control through 2017, while Parra will be a free agent this winter.

Arodys Vizcaino will serve as the Braves' closer following the trade of Jim Johnson.

Andrew McKirahan could get a few chances if the opposition is sending up a bunch of left-handed batters, but Vizcaino will be the main guy here. He's allowed only one run over nine innings since returning from a PED suspension. Obviously he needs to be added in fantasy leagues where he's still available.

Giants acquired RHP Mike Leake from the Reds in exchange for 1B Adam Duvall and RHP Keury Mella.

The Giants were unable to land the frontline starter they sought, but Leake isn't a bad backup plan. The right-hander boasts a 3.56 ERA on the season and has put up a 2.59 mark since the beginning of June. He'll bump Tim Hudson to the bullpen.
Jul 31 - 8:14 AM

Carlos Carrasco fired a complete game Thursday against the Athletics, allowing only one run on two hits in a 3-1 triumph.

Both hits came in the first inning. The dominant outing wasn't much of a surprise. Against a punchless lineup in a spacious park, Carrasco -- 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA in his previous four road starts -- did not disappoint. He struck out seven and was never in danger of getting pulled, finishing off Oakland in a tidy 103 pitches. It was the third consecutive complete game thrown by an Indians starter. Carrasco improves to 11-8 with a 4.03 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.

Moved back into the leadoff spot, Matt Carpenter went 4-for-5 with two homers, a double and four runs scored in the Cardinals' 9-8 win over the Rockies on Thursday.

The Cardinals scored three in the bottom of the ninth to win it, with a Greg Garcia bases-loaded walk ending the game. Carpenter turned in far and away his best game since April. He hadn't had even three hits since May 22. The Cards will probably keep him in the leadoff spot for now, but that might not be bad news for Kolten Wong; Wong hit third with Matt Holliday out tonight.
