Tigers avoided arbitration with RHP Max Scherzer by agreeing to a one-year, $15.525 million contract.

The figure comes in $1.925 million north of MLBTradeRumors.com's projection of $13.6 million. Scherzer certainly earned the monster payday in his final year of arbitration after putting up a 21-3 record, 2.90 ERA and 240 strikeouts last season. He'll be looking to repeat his Cy Young form in 2014 in what will be his walk year.

Dodgers signed RHP Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract.

Garcia, 38, pitched in Taiwan last season after failing to make the Braves' Opening Day roster. He held a 4.37 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 17 appearances -- 13 starts -- for the Orioles and Braves in 2013. Garcia will give the Dodgers some rotation depth in the minors with Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) out indefinitely and Brandon Beachy (elbow) working his way back from Tommy John surgery.

Padres manager Bud Black said Monday that he would "possibly" consider using Wil Myers some at first base during the season.

Myers played three innings at the position Sunday and also played two games at first base last season with the Rays. "Possibly," Black said when asked about using Myers at first during the season. "The versatility that Wil has shown in his entire professional career is something not to ignore." It seems unlikely that Myers will play a whole lot at first, but we could see it some against lefties, allowing the Padres to bench the left-handed hitting Yonder Alonso and put Cameron Maybin in center field.

Carlos Rodon will begin the season in Triple-A Charlotte's rotation.

Rodon hasn't officially been re-assigned to minor league camp yet, but both White Sox manager Robin Ventura and general manager Rick Hahn indicated that the move was coming. Hahn did suggest that Rodon could eventually come up to help in relief if a need arises, but for now the left will stay stretched out as a starter. He stands a good chance to be in Chicago's rotation at some point this season. "He could survive in the bullpen right now, yes," Hahn said. "But is that the best move for his long-term development and long-term value to the Chicago White Sox, or having a front-end starter?"

Carlos Martinez has been officially named as the Cardinals' fifth starter.

That was the speculation as soon as Jaime Garcia had a recurrence of shoulder issues, but it's now official. Meanwhile, Marco Gonzales will be optioned to Triple-A. Martinez has immense upside and is well worth a flier in most mixed fantasy leagues.

Jayson Werth (shoulder) hit in a minor league game Monday for the first time this spring.

It was a big step or Werth, who underwent surgery in January to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. It's unlikely that he'll be ready for the start of the season at this point, but he might not have to miss much time.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Pirates have rekindled extension talks with outfielder Gregory Polanco.

Heyman reiterates that the two sides discussed a deal last May, where the Pirates offered a seven-year contract north of $50 million which included three team options. It's believed that Polanco opted against it because of low salaries involving the option years. Details of these new discussions aren't yet known and it's unclear if there will be a resolution by Opening Day. The 23-year-old Polanco has only been in the majors for less than one year and is under team control through 2020.

Eddie Butler left Monday's Cactus League start against the Athletics after one inning due to right shoulder fatigue.

Butler allowed one run on two hits and also walked two batters in his lone inning of work. He left the ballpark to get an evaluation. The 23-year-old is a finalist for a rotation spot this spring, but this isn't what you want to hear about his shoulder issues last year.

J.J. Hardy (shoulder) will be shut down from baseball activities for 10 days.

Hardy was sent for an MRA on his ailing left shoulder on Monday, which showed a subscapularis (or muscle) strain. The Orioles will see how he responds to rest before deciding on the next step. It sounds like a return in April is possible if he can avoid setbacks, but Everth Cabrera will likely fill in for now. He's worth a look in deeper fantasy leagues if you need speed.

Nationals signed OF Reed Johnson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Johnson was just granted his release by the Marlins on Monday and it didn't take him long to find a new opportunity. The 38-year-old batted just .235/.266/.348 with two home runs in 201 plate appearances last season with Miami, but he could have an outside chance to make the Nats' Opening Day roster given their injury issues in the outfield.
Mar 30 - 4:27 PM

Drew Storen left Monday's Grapefruit League game due to a blister on his right foot.

That's a sigh of relief for the Nationals, who are dealing with all sorts of bumps and bruises at the moment. Storen, who is expected to serve as Nats' closer this season, should be fine by the time Opening Day rolls around.

Anthony Rendon saw Dr. James Andrews on Monday to get a second opinion on his left knee.

Rendon suffered what was termed as a minor MCL sprain in his knee on March 9, but he continues to feel discomfort and went to Andrews to get some answers. The Nationals are still waiting on his diagnosis, but obviously they need to prepare themselves for the possibility that they will be without him for the early part of the season.
