Athletics signed C Dusty Brown to a minor league contract.

The 31-year-old backstop hasn't appeared in the big leagues since he appeared in 11 games with the Pirates during the 2011 season. He'll provide organizational depth for the A's.

Pedro Alvarez did not make the Orioles' Opening Day roster.

Instead he'll begin the year with Triple-A Norfolk. Johnny Giavotella, who was competing for a backup infield spot, will also be sent down when the seasons opens. Alvarez slugged 22 homers for the O's in 2016 but he's a liability defensively and doesn't hit left-handers well. He'll see time in Baltimore at some point but not out of the gate.

Cardinals placed RHP Trevor Rosenthal on the 10-day disabled list with a right lat strain.

This is not a new injury for Rosenthal, but he hadn't been bothered by it for the last few weeks. Apparently there has been a setback. Sam Tuivailala has been recalled from the Triple-A roster and will open the 2017 season in the Cardinals' bullpen.
Mar 30 - 2:54 PM

Trevor Cahill will start the Padres' third regular-season game.

Luis Perdomo will start the fifth game and Jarred Cosart will open the season in the bullpen. Cahill posted a 3.26 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 21 strikeouts over 19 1/3 innings this spring in Cactus League play and might carry some value in deeper mixed leagues. At the very least, he should have streaming appeal.
Mar 30 - 2:08 PM

Rockies manager Bud Black named Jon Gray as his Opening Day starter.

Gray sent a scare through Rockies camp on Friday when he left an ugly Cactus League start against the Giants with discomfort in a toe on his left foot, but an MRI came up clean and he struck out seven batters over six innings Wednesday in a minor league game. The 25-year-old right-hander carries high-level fantasy upside into 2017, even calling Coors Field home.
Mar 30 - 12:31 PM

Blake Treinen has been named the Nationals' closer.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker made the announcement Thursday in camp. Koda Glover looked like the favorite at one point, with Shawn Kelley probably next in line, but Treinen has been terrific this spring and offers the Nats the best combination of reliability and durability leading into 2017. He also has one of the best power sinkers in the sport. Treinen obviously needs to be owned in all fantasy leagues with Opening Day approaching.
Mar 30 - 12:07 PM

Rangers signed 2B Rougned Odor to a six-year, $49.5 million contract extension with a $13.5 million club option for 2023.

The deal was agreed to on Saturday and then finalized Thursday as the Rangers packed up camp in Surprise, Arizona. It will cover Odor's first three years of arbitration eligibility (2018-2020) and at least two years of free agency, at a fairly reasonable cost. The 23-year-old second baseman tallied 33 home runs, 88 RBI, 14 stolen bases, and 89 runs scored in 150 games last season.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Cardinals "have quietly showed interest" in White Sox starter Jose Quintana.

Heyman notes that the Astros and Pirates have been the perceived frontrunners for Quintana, but he calls their pursuits of the left-handed ace "passive" up to this point. In his report Heyman then labels the Cardinals a "sleeper team," with the "combination of young players and prospects to make it work." The asking price is undoubtedly sky-high for Quintana, who boasts a 3.35 ERA over the last four seasons and a team-friendly contract that runs through 2020. He is currently projected to serve as the Opening Day starter for the rebuilding White Sox.

Jeanmar Gomez will open the 2017 regular season as the Phillies' closer.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin confirmed that news Thursday in camp. Gomez was sharp this spring, registering a 0.93 ERA over 9 2/3 innings in the Grapefruit League, but he's a lower-tier fantasy option at closer given his poor numbers last year and the talent behind him in the Philadelphia bullpen. Hector Neris and Joaquin Benoit will work in setup roles for now.
Mar 30 - 10:37 AM

An MRI came back negative on the left elbow of Mets starter Steven Matz.

That's obviously good news, but Matz will be shut down for the next three weeks and projects to miss all of April. He was given a platelet-rich plasma injection Wednesday. Zack Wheeler and Robert Gsellman will round out the Mets' season-opening starting rotation.
Mar 30 - 10:23 AM

Red Sox placed LHP Drew Pomeranz on the 10-day disabled list with a left flexor strain.

Pomeranz remains on track to make his first regular-season start April 9 in Detroit. He was slowed this spring by some triceps discomfort, but the left-hander threw 76 pitches in a Grapefruit League start against the Twins on Wednesday and he should get up to 90 pitches in his next outing -- wherever that might be.
Mar 30 - 10:20 AM

Yankees manager Joe Girardi named Aaron Judge the club's starting right fielder.

There were hints that the Yankees might send Judge back to the minor leagues for more seasoning, but Girardi officially backed the 24-year-old on Thursday as he announced the club's final roster decisions. While far from a completer hitter, Judge should be able to post big power numbers this season for New York -- and thus carries deep-league fantasy intrigue. Aaron Hicks will open the year as a kind of utility outfielder.
