Cory Luebke will miss all of the 2014 season after it's been determined that he'll require a second Tommy John surgery on his left elbow.

Luebke felt pain in the elbow back in September and was shut down, but he was able to throw from a mound with no issues a couple months later. However, an MRI last Friday revealed a re-tear of his ulnar collateral ligament, which means he's set to go under the knife again. "I feel bad for him … from 2011 through the first part of 2012, he was certainly on his way," said Padres general manager Josh Byrnes. "This is a real setback. There's been a lot of missed time. Hopefully in a year or so, he can get back to being Cory Luebke. This whole thing has been a mystery."

Albert Pujols (foot) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the A's.

Pujols has not played since Monday due to discomfort in his foot related to plantar fasciitis. Mike Trout will serve as the Angels' designated hitter on Wednesday while C.J. Cron mans first base. It is possible the veteran Pujols won't play again this season, but that has not yet been determined for certain.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said that Neftali Feliz (arm) is almost certainly done for the 2016 season.

No surprise here. Feliz was just recently cleared to throw off of flat ground as he continues to rehab from a bout of right arm discomfort. With mere days remaining in the regular season, a return to the major league mound would have been miraculous. The 28-year-old right-hander finishes out the 2016 season holding a 3.52 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 61/21 K/BB ratio over 53 2/3 frames.

Adrian Gonzalez (sinus infection) is in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.

Gonzalez was lifted midway through Tuesday's contest due to a sinus infection. The ailment was not burdensome enough to require an additional day off, though. He is batting in his customary fourth spot on Wednesday.

Gregory Polanco is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs due to a stiff neck.

Polanco's current neck stiffness could be related to a Friday collision with the outfield wall. Matt Joyce will start in his place in left field and is batting fourth.
Sep 28 - 6:30 PM

Starling Marte (back) is being held out of the lineup again as the Pirates face the Cubs on Wednesday.

Marte said on Tuesday that he is uncertain whether he will be able to start another game this season. He has been fighting through back tightness and back spasms for most of September. Josh Bell draws the start in right field and will bat second.

Kyle Seager went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in the Mariners' 12-4 rout of the Astros on Wednesday.

Seattle's offense managed 15 hits and seven walks to down the 'Stros and stay alive in the American League Wild Card race. Seager singled in the Mariners' three-run first inning and then produced the final scoring of the game with a three-run shot off Pat Neshek in the top of the eighth. The star third baseman is slashing .281/.362/.506 with 30 home runs and 99 RBI in 154 games this season.
Sep 28 - 5:52 PM

Joe Mauer (quad) will be available to hit off the bench when the Twins face the Royals on Wednesday.

While Mauer could see an at-bat in Wednesday's contest, he is not in the lineup proper. Kennys Vargas draws the start at first instead and is hitting fifth. Mauer has been dealing with a right quad injury for well over a month. He has played in just 12 games in September.
Sep 28 - 5:14 PM

Seth Smith was lifted for a pinch-runner after being hit in the foot during Wednesday's game against the Astros.

Smith was struck in the foot by a pitch in the top of the sixth inning. Ben Gamel subsequently came on to pinch-run for him. The Mariners should provide an update as to Smith's status later on Wednesday.

Cubs signed president of baseball operations Theo Epstein to a five-year contract extension.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale is reporting that the extension will be in excess of $50 million. Since joining the Cubs in 2011, Epstein has steadily built the club into a World Series favorite. This season, the Cubbies have run away with the NL Central. Their record currently sits at 101-56. In addition to Epstein, GM Jed Hoyer and vice president Jason McLeod are also being awarded extensions.

Devon Travis (shoulder) is out again Wednesday.

Travis injured his left shoulder Monday in the Blue Jays' benches-clearing brawl with the Yankees and remains day-to-day. Ryan Goins is at second base and Ezequiel Carrera is leading off Wednesday night against the Orioles and right-hander Chris Tillman.
Sep 28 - 3:38 PM

Nick Castellanos is starting at third base and batting seventh Wednesday versus the Indians.

It will be his first start for the Tigers since August 6, when the young third baseman suffered a fractured left hand on a hit-by-pitch. Castellanos smacked a pinch-hit double and scored a run Tuesday in his first action off the disabled list. He looks to be fully healthy.
