Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Didi Gregorius is the "favorite" to win the starting shortstop job this spring, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.

"To me, the favorite has to be Didi," Towers said. "He was our shortstop last year. For a rookie, I thought he played very, very well." Towers goes on to say he thought Gregorius wore down near the end of the season, contributing to his poor finish at the plate. Gregorius and top prospect Chris Owings will vie for the starting gig in the coming weeks, with the loser likely starting the season at Triple-A Reno. Owings winning the job would certainly be the preference for fantasy owners, but it seems he'll have to earn it. It's definitely a battle worth watching.

Carlos Beltran is out of the Yankees' starting lineup on Wednesday due to a private family matter.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi isn't divulging any details and told reporters Wednesday that Beltran will be allowed to "take as much time as he needs." The veteran outfielder is back in New York while the Yankees finish up a series at Tropicana Field.

Giancarlo Stanton (face) won't play again this year.

Stanton is making steady progress from the facial fractures and lacerations that he suffered September 11 when he was struck by a Mike Fiers pitch, but the Marlins are going to play it safe with their 24-year-old slugger. He should have a fairly normal offseason and challenge for National League MVP honors again in 2015.
Sep 17 - 5:03 PM

Arismendy Alcantara (wrist) is aiming to return to the Cubs' starting lineup on Thursday.

Alcantara suffered a right wrist sprain when he slammed into the outfield wall on Monday and has missed two straight games, but he can throw with no pain and will attempt batting practice on Thursday afternoon. If it goes well, look for him to return.
Sep 17 - 4:59 PM

Nick Castellanos (foot) is back in the Tigers' starting lineup Wednesday against the Twins.

Castellanos was a late scratch Tuesday after fouling a ball off his left foot in his final at-bat on Monday. It was never a serious concern. The 22-year-old third baseman is batting .266/.313/.405 with 10 home runs and 60 RBI in 137 games this season.
Sep 17 - 4:54 PM

Alex Avila (head) is absent from the Tigers' starting lineup again on Wednesday night.

Avila hasn't played since taking a foul tip off his mask on Sunday. He has a history of concussions, so the Tigers are treating the situation carefully. Bryan Holaday will start at catcher against the Twins.
Sep 17 - 4:49 PM

Mark Teixeira (wrist) is back in the Yankees' starting lineup on Wednesday night.

Teixeira missed Tuesday night's game due to wrist discomfort. It's apparently a manageable issue. He's playing first base and batting cleanup versus the Rays.

Major League Baseball has suspended Marcus Stroman six games for intentionally throwing at the Orioles' Caleb Joseph during Monday's game.

Stroman has maintained his innocence and will appeal the suspension, but it was pretty clear that he did it on purpose. With expanded rosters, he could just drop the appeal after his next scheduled outing Saturday and simply get a couple extra days off between starts.

Angel Pagan is set to undergo an MRI on his back.

The Giants had been hoping Pagan could return to action after Thursday's off day, but thing are up in the air now. It's possible he could receive another cortisone shot before attempting to play through the ailment. Pagan could undergo back surgery over the offseason.
Sep 17 - 2:36 PM

Red Sox recalled OF Rusney Castillo from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Castillo batted .282 with one homer and two stolen bases over 39 at-bats in the minors and will now get a look with the big club. He hasn't played regularly in a while, but Castillo will see the bulk of the at-bats in center field down the stretch and his power/speed combo makes him worth a shot in all formats. He's hitting seventh Wednesday in his debut.
Sep 17 - 1:19 PM

Hanley Ramirez (elbow) remained out of the Dodgers' lineup Wednesday.

Ramirez was able to pinch-hit Tuesday but will miss a second straight start, suggesting that his elbow is more of an issue in the field. The Dodgers are considering the shortstop day-to-day. Miguel Rojas is filling in Wednesday.
Sep 17 - 12:05 PM

Gio Gonzalez has been scratched from Wednesday's start against the Braves.

The Nationals clinched the National League East Tuesday, so they'll give the ball to Blake Treinen Wednesday and give Gonzalez some extra rest. The Nats will also undoubtedly have many backups in the lineup, which is good news for Braves starter Alex Wood. Gonzalez will now presumably get the ball on Thursday in Miami instead.
