MLB.com's Jordan Bastian says Carlos Santana "looked comfortable" during a third base drill Monday.

Santana played third base in winter ball and will be tried there throughout the spring to see if he can handle the position. Gaining eligibility at the hot corner would be a huge boost to the 27-year-old's already-lofty fantasy value. He hit .268/.377/.455 with 20 home runs and 74 RBI in 154 games last season for the Indians.

Nelson Cruz was scratched from Friday's lineup with a cramp in his hamstring.

He should be back in there in a day or two as long as it's indeed merely a cramp. Taylor Motter has taken Cruz's spot in the lineup.

Blue Jays designated C Jarrod Saltalamacchia for assignment.

Saltalamacchia was off to as bad of a start as you could imagine, going 1-for-25 with 16 strikeouts while failing to throw out a single baserunner in nine attempts. He'll get a minor league deal somewhere, but the soon-to-be 32-year-old has hit an ugly .159/.267/.317 since the beginning of last season. Luke Maile will now back up Russell Martin.
Apr 28 - 3:40 PM

David Freese (hamstring) remained out of the Pirates' lineup Friday.

He hasn't played since Monday because of a strained right hamstring. The disabled list will be in play if Freese doesn't improve in a hurry, but the Pirates are still listing him as day-to-day for now. They have Josh Harrison at third base and Gift Ngoepe at second Friday.

Dustin Pedroia is batting sixth for the Red Sox on Friday versus the Cubs.

It's the first time in his career that he's batted sixth. With Pedroia (.242/.311/.258) moving down, Xander Bogaerts (.313/.353/.328) is up in the leadoff spot.

Yankees activated SS Didi Gregorius from the 10-day disabled list.

Gregorius missed almost the entire first month of the season with a strained right shoulder that he suffered during the World Baseball Classic, but he played in some rehab games with no issues. He's starting at shortstop and batting sixth Friday.
Apr 28 - 2:42 PM

Lucas Duda (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment on Friday.

Duda is eligible for activation on Sunday and should be ready at that time after recovering from a hyperextended left elbow. The Mets need him with Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring) headed to the disabled list.
Apr 28 - 2:39 PM

Mets placed OF Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

It's no surprise, of course, as Cespedes had to exit the field with assistance after aggravating his left hamstring injury. Cespedes was slated to undergo an MRI on Friday, but the Mets have yet to reveal how long they think the slugger might be sidelined. Michael Conforto will play every day with Cespedes on the shelf.
Apr 28 - 2:37 PM

Cam Bedrosian (groin) has yet to begin a throwing program.

Bedrosian has been on the disabled list for nearly a week with a strained right groin but remains shut down. He's eligible to return from the DL next Tuesday, but it doesn't sound like that's going to happen. Bud Norris has been capably filling the Angels' closer role with Bedrosian out.

The tendinitis in Adrian Gonzalez's right forearm has remained an issue during the first month of the season.

Gonzalez showed up to spring training with the issue and was shut down for two weeks in hopes that it would dissipate. It improved enough for him to participate in the World Baseball Classic, but clearly the ailment is still nagging him. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts admitted that the fact that Gonzalez has never been on the disabled list in his career is a "factor" in why the club hasn't considered placing him on the DL to this point. The team eventually could reconsider if Gonzalez (.250/.341/.319) doesn't improve, but Roberts said Thursday that he thinks Gonzalez's injury is "getting better" and the first baseman is "getting more extension with that lead arm." The club has Cody Bellinger as an option at first base should Gonzalez ultimately wind up on the DL.

The Royals plan to keep Jorge Soler (oblique) on his rehab assignment through May 10.

That's when the allotted 20-day period runs out. "His rehab assignment runs through May 10," general manager Dayton Moore said Thursday. "And at this point in time, we fully expect to utilize that period of time for him to get some at-bats and get caught up." It had been looking like Soler could be activated as soon as this weekend, but apparently his fantasy owners will have to wait a while longer. Soler is batting .250/.348/.550 with two homers in his first six rehab contests.

Bud Norris pitched a scoreless ninth inning Thursday to close out a 2-1 win over the Athletics.

Norris issued a one-out walk to Yonder Alonso but pitched around any further damage, finishing off the A's without incident. He's now a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities since taking over for the injured Cam Bedrosian, and the 32-year-old has a legit 2.84 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 15/5 K/BB ratio over 12 2/3 innings. Bedrosian was similarly dominant before hitting the shelf, but Norris may actually be forcing his way into manager Mike Scioscia's plans at closer and is worth an add in mixed leagues to find out.
