Jesus Montero continued his torrid Cactus League hitting on Saturday, belting a pair of homers to lead the Mariners to an 8-5 victory over the Dodgers.

Montero finished the night 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three RBI. He took Josh Beckett deep for a solo shot in the second inning and added a two-run blast off Chris Withrow in the eighth The most impressive thing about his evening may have been that each of his bombs were of the opposite field variety. Perhaps it’s too soon to write him off.

Agent Scott Boras said Wednesday that his client Matt Wieters might not sign until January.

Wieters' market has been rather quiet after he put up an underwhelming .711 OPS (87 OPS+) in 2016 while also taking a step back behind the plate. The Orioles didn't make him a qualifying offer this time, so at least he doesn't have draft pick compensation attached. Boras said he has talked to several teams, but he appears content with waiting out the market.

Yankees signed DH Matt Holliday to a one-year, $13 million contract.

The deal was reported over the weekend and it's now official. Holliday turns 37 next month and is coming off a year where he slugged 20 homers with a .782 OPS in 110 games while missing significant time with a fractured thumb. The plan calls for him to serve as the primary designated hitter, but he could also see occasional time in the outfield and at first base. He could have a better chance to stay healthy in this situation and we wouldn't rule out a return to relevancy in mixed fantasy leagues while playing in the AL East.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday that he's planning to have Huston Street, Cam Bedrosian, and Andrew Bailey compete for the closer job in spring training.

Street would seem to have the edge, but he isn't going to have the job handed to him after an injury-plagued season where he posted an ugly 6.45 ERA and 14/12 K/BB ratio over 22 1/3 innings. The 33-year-old required minor knee surgery in August, but he's expected to be ready for spring training. Bedrosian is the closer of the future here, but Bailey had a strong finish in the role.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Nationals have talked with the Rays about a potential Alex Colome trade.

The Nationals are on the lookout for a closer and Colome would certainly fit the bill, as he put up a 1.97 ERA with 37 saves and a 71/15 K/BB ratio over 56 2/3 innings this past season. But the cost is going to be considerable. The 27-year-old Colome isn't even eligible for arbitration yet.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Nationals are considering White Sox center fielder Adam Eaton.

After missing out on Chris Sale, the Nationals have pivoted back to landing a center fielder. And their search is stretching beyond Andrew McCutchen. It only makes sense that Eaton's name would come up, as the White Sox probably already know who they'd like from the Nationals' system. Other trade candidates include Lorenzo Cain with the Royals and possibly Charlie Blackmon with the Rockies.

According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers have done "significant homework" on free agent right-hander Tyson Ross.

Ross was non-tendered by the Padres last week after making just one start in 2016 before undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. He's a big question mark for the start of 2017 and beyond, but the state of the free agent market will make him intriguing to plenty of teams.

Royals acquired OF Jorge Soler from the Cubs for RHP Wade Davis.

The haul could have been a bit bigger if Davis didn’t come with some health question marks, but Soler is an intriguing buy-low. The 24-year-old started his MLB career with a bang in 2014, but he owns a .253/.328/.413 batting line in 668 plate appearances since. Strikeouts have been the big issue, but his defense has also been shaky. Perhaps the change of scenery will be the jolt he needs. He's expected to see time between right field and DH wit his new team. Soler still has four years of team control remaining. By parting with Davis, Kelvin Herrera figures to move into the closer role and has the potential to be a top-tier option at the spot in fantasy leagues.

Cubs acquired RHP Wade Davis from the Royals for OF Jorge Soler.

Medicals weren’t a sure thing after Davis’ forearm issues from last season, but the Cubs were apparently satisfied with what they saw. If healthy, Davis is a tremendous pickup for the back-end of this bullpen. The 31-year-old wasn’t as dominant by his usual insanely lofty standards in 2016, but he owns an incredible 1.18 ERA in 185 appearances over the last three seasons. He’s going into his final year of team control.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears that the Dodgers like Todd Frazier and have talked to the White Sox about a potential trade, but their first choice remains keeping Justin Turner.

It's no secret they'd like to keep Turner, but apparently they aren't willing to give him a five-year contract to do it. Even if Frazier doesn't end up on the Dodgers, the White Sox figure to find a match somewhere as they continue their rebuild. Frazier is due to become a free agent after 2017.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, Mark Trumbo's asking price is $80 million.

This is in line with previous reports which suggested he was asking for a deal in the $75-80 million range. The Rockies are off the board as a possibility after signing Ian Desmond and the Mariners are reportedly "moving on," so he could be running out of potential landing spots. And that's speaking nothing of the other first base/outfield/DH possibilities available via free agency and trade. Regardless, Heyman says that Trumbo has suitors. The Orioles and Indians would seem to fit that mold.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Diamondbacks are most open to discussing Shelby Miller and Patrick Corbin in trade talks.

The Diamondbacks have been willing to discuss their starting pitcher depth at the Winter Meetings this week after recently acquiring Taijuan Walker, but Piecoro hears that the asking price is high and that other clubs feel a deal likely won't get done. "I think they’re hesitant to deal any of them because they haven’t had the time to evaluate and know exactly what they have," one source told Piecoro on the topic of the new D-Backs' front office. Miller was acquired as part of a blockbuster deal with the Braves just one year ago, but he disappointed with a rough 6.15 ERA in 20 starts in 2016. Patrick Corbin has shown upside in the past, but he struggled with a 5.15 ERA in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery and finished the year in the bullpen.
