Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) has been cleared to begin throwing.

Iwakuma has been sidelined since the early part of camp with a strained right middle finger, but he can now shed the splint and begin ramping things up. He'll start out by throwing a tennis ball Friday and hopefully a baseball by next Monday. If all goes well, he has a chance to join the M's rotation by the end of April.

According to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish, the Cardinals are talking to the Indians about Brandon Moss.

Moss can play both first base and corner outfield, which fits the Cardinals' immediate need now that Matt Holliday is headed back to the disabled list with a re-strain of his right quad. Moss has struggled in his first season with the Indians, but the 31-year-old registered an .844 OPS (135 OPS+) for the A's between 2012-2014. Cotillo says there's been talk of a one-for-one swap of Moss and Cardinals pitching prospect Rob Kaminsky.

Red Sox manager John Farrell acknowledged Wednesday that Pablo Sandoval's weight is an issue.

It's the first time Farrell has addressed this topic since spring training, when he was in full support of Boston's new acquisition. The burly third baseman got thrown out at home on a ball he should have scored on Wednesday night against the White Sox and had to be lifted from the game two innings later due to dehydration. "There are ongoing efforts to support that, to try to get him in the best shape possible," said Farrell. "That's something Pablo has dealt with his entire career. It continues to be addressed."

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Mets backed out of the proposed trade to acquire Carlos Gomez from the Brewers due to concern over his hip issue.

Scott Boras, the agent for Gomez, has stated that his client is "injury-free" and that he has "no problem whatsoever" with his hip. The Mets will have to continue shopping elsewhere to acquire the big bat they would like to add to the outfield.

Albert Pujols went yard for the 30th time this year, but the Angels wound up losing on Wednesday to the Astros by a 6-3 score.

He went 1-for-4 on the night. Pujols is one homer shy of Mike Trout's 31 for the major league lead. He's also knocked in 64 runs while hitting .260/.323/.539.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Phillies will acquire Matt Harrison, Alec Asher, Jerad Eickhoff, Nick Williams, Jorge Alfaro and Nick Williams in exchange for Cole Hamels and Jake Diekman.

Alfaro, Williams and Thompson are the three best prospects in the deal, and represent a nice return package for the Phillies. The Rangers get another ace to pair with Yu Darvish for the next few seasons as they strive to return to glory in the American League West.

Lance McCullers pitched well in a winning effort on Wednesday against the Angels, allowing only one run in seven innings of work.

The right-hander gave up an RBI triple to Conor Gillaspie in the second inning, but that was it. He scattered five hits while walking none and striking out five. With the win, the Astros retake sole possession of first place in the AL West over the Angels. McCullers has been quite effective in his first 13 major league starts, brandishing a 2.48 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and a 78/27 K/BB ratio over 76 1/3 innings. He'll take on the Rangers in a road start next.

Bryce Harper hit two home runs and knocked in four runs in a 3-for-4 effort, helping the Nationals take down the Marlins on Wednesday.

That ends a nine-game homerless streak and allows Harper to retake the National League lead in home runs with 29. He carries a superb .335/.463/.690 batting line with 68 RBI.

The right-hander has held opponents to two runs or fewer in six consecutive starts, doing wonders for his ERA which now stands at 4.35 with a 1.33 WHIP and an 80/42 K/BB ratio over 113 2/3 innings. He's limited the opposition to two or fewer runs in four consecutive starts, lowering his ERA to 4.27 with a 1.28 WHIP and an 84/47 K/BB ratio over 137 innings.
