Javy Guerra is expected to be claimed off waivers or traded, reports the MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo.

The former closer entered last season having put up a 2.45 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 75/41 K/BB ratio over 91 2/3 innings the previous two seasons while saving 29 games for the Dodgers, but 2013 turned into a nightmare. He posted a 6.75 ERA and 12/6 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings before Los Angeles banished him to the minors for good in May. The 28-year-old, who was designated for assignment on Sunday, hasn't even accrued two service years yet. The interest he's generating isn't a surprise.

Nationals manager Matt Williams said the MRI results for Ryan Zimmerman showed a "pretty substantial" hamstring strain.

Well, that's not good. Zimmerman was placed on the disabled list prior to Wednesday's game, and it doesn't appear he's anywhere close to returning to the club at this point. Anthony Rendon will get the majority of the starts at third base with Zimmerman sidelined.

Bartolo Colon carried a perfect game into the seventh inning Wednesday in the Mets' 3-2 win over the Mariners.

Robinson Cano ended the bid for perfection with a two-out single to shallow left field in the bottom of the seventh. Colon then gave up two runs in the eighth but wound up with his ninth victory of 2014. The 41-year-old right-hander has a 4.03 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 100/19 K/BB ratio in 134 innings this season. The Mets are known to be shopping him with the July 31 trade deadline drawing near.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday "it's too early to call" whether the rest program prescribed for Masahiro Tanaka's right elbow will work.

The other option is obviously surgery, so the Yankees are going to give the program all the time they can before making a decision. Cashman did add that Tanaka is feeling better since he was shut down on July 10 due to a partial tear in his ulnar collateral ligament. He's still weeks away from any potential return to the mound.
Jul 23 - 6:47 PM

Manny Machado (back) is not in the Orioles' lineup on Wednesday.

Machado received an anti-inflammatory injection for his back after Tuesday's game, so it's no surprise that he's getting the day off Wednesday. He's still considered day-to-day for now, but if misses too many more games it might make sense for the Orioles to shut him down for a few weeks. Ryan Flaherty started at third base in his absence.

According to CSNBayArea.com beat reporter Andrew Baggarly, the Giants are "growing more concerned" about Brandon Belt's concussion.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters Tuesday that Belt was "making progress" and might soon be able to resume some baseball activities, but the first baseman was sent back to the team hotel on Wednesday evening in Philadelphia after exhibiting lingering concussion-related symptoms. There is no timetable for his return at this point.

James Shields held the White Sox to one run in seven innings Wednesday in a 2-1 Royals victory.

Shields was left with a no-decision because the Kansas City offense didn't break through for the lead until the top of the ninth inning. But the right-hander pitched really well, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out seven White Sox batters. He'll carry a 3.58 ERA and 1.27 WHIP into his next start at home against the Twins.
Jul 23 - 5:24 PM

Eric Hosmer was pulled from Wednesday's game against the Cubs with "decreased grip strength in his hand."

That was the announcement from the Kansas City medical staff. Hosmer got hit by a pitch on Sunday and sat out Monday and Tuesday with what was called a right hand contusion. He obviously needs a little more rest.
Jul 23 - 5:07 PM

Ruben Tejada left Wednesday's game against the Mariners after taking a Taijuan Walker pitch to the head.

The ball hit the front of Tejada's helmet and knocked it off. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, but the Mets will surely run concussion tests.
Jul 23 - 5:05 PM

Mark Reynolds slugged two home runs Wednesday in the Brewers' 5-1 defeat of the visiting Reds.

Reynolds' offensive outburst helped Milwaukee to a big three-game sweep of Cincinnati. He hit a two-run bomb in the bottom of the sixth inning and then smacked a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth. The first baseman is batting just .207 this year, but he now has 16 home runs.
Jul 23 - 5:02 PM

Hanley Ramirez (wrist) is out of the Dodgers' starting lineup Tuesday night versus the Pirates.

Hanley was struck by pitches on the left shoulder and wrist in the Dodgers' win over the Cardinals on Sunday night and hasn't played since. He's still day-to-day.
Jul 23 - 4:44 PM

Yasiel Puig (hand) is not in the Dodgers' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Pirates.

It'll be the fourth straight game that Puig has missed. He took a Joe Kelly pitch off his left hand on Saturday and is still sore. Multiple X-rays have been taken and the results were negative. Puig remains day-to-day.
