Aroldis Chapman will undergo surgery Thursday to repair fractures around his nose and left eye.

Chapman, who was also diagnosed with a mild concussion, will need 6-8 weeks of recovery time. And he won't necessarily be ready to pitch in major league games immediately after his rehab is through. The hard-throwing Cuban closer was hit in the face by a Salvador Perez line drive on Wednesday night in Cactus League play and had to be carted off the field on a stretcher. Cincinnati will likely open the 2014 season with a committee of JJ Hoover, Jonathan Broxton, and Sean Marshall at closer.

Nationals placed RHP Koda Glover on the 10-day disabled list with a left hip impingement.

Matt Grace was called up from Triple-A Syracuse in the corresponding roster move. Glover said he felt pain on the first pitch of his outing Tuesday against the Rockies but expects to return after the minimum 10 days. The right-hander suffered a torn labrum last season, so he has a history of hip trouble. Shawn Kelley will have the ninth inning all to himself in Glover's absence.

Gary Sanchez (biceps) has been throwing from 120 feet.

He's also been taking BP in the batting cage. Sanchez will probably need a minor league rehab assignment before he's ready to return, but it shouldn't be long before the Yankees' star catcher is back behind the plate. The 24-year-old strained his biceps against the Orioles on April 8.
Apr 26 - 5:40 PM

Didi Gregorius (shoulder) is on track to return against the Orioles this weekend.

Gregorius could be back as soon as Friday. The 27-year-old has looked sharp during his minor league rehab assignment, hitting .429 with a homer in four games for High-A Tampa. Gregorius has spent the past month recovering from a shoulder strain he suffered at the World Baseball Classic. Ronald Torreyes has been kept his seat warm at shortstop over the first few weeks.
Apr 26 - 5:36 PM

Eric Thames left Wednesday's game against the Reds with left hamstring tightness.

Jesus Aguilar replaced Thames at first base to begin the eighth inning. Brewers manager Craig Counsell said the injury is "not a big deal," so it looks like Thames will avoid the disabled list. The hottest hitter in baseball went 1-for-3 with a single and two walks on Wednesday. With Milwaukee off on Thursday, Thames expects to be in the lineup Friday against Atlanta.
Apr 26 - 4:57 PM

Jett Bandy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in the Brewers' 9-4 win over the Reds on Wednesday.

Bandy hit an RBI single in the Brewers' five-run first inning before adding an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. The 27-year-old catcher has a sensational .349/.391/.698 batting line with four home runs in 13 games this season, but he'll continue to share starts behind the plate with Manny Pina, who's also off to an excellent start offensively.
Apr 26 - 4:53 PM

Nomar Mazara is not in the Rangers' lineup Wednesday against the Twins.

Mazara has seen his average fall from .352 to .247 during a recent 2-for-31 dry spell. Shin-Soo Choo will handle right field and bat eighth against Twins lefty Hector Santiago on Wednesday. Mazara started the first 21 games of the season, so he was probably due for a night off anyway.
Apr 26 - 4:09 PM

Jose Abreu has been diagnosed with a mild right hip flexor strain.

Abreu took an awkward spill while trying to field a groundball in Wednesday afternoon's game against the Royals. A hip flexor strain is something that could send the first baseman to the 10-day disabled list, though the White Sox are calling him day-to-day for now. Todd Frazier moved from third base to first base on Wednesday with Tyler Saladino taking over at the hot corner.
Apr 26 - 3:49 PM

George Springer (hamstring) is out again Wednesday versus the Indians.

Springer subbed into Tuesday night's game after Teoscar Hernandez suffered a major knee injury, but the Astros don't want to push it with his tight left hamstring. Josh Reddick is in center field and batting leadoff on Wednesday.
Apr 26 - 3:28 PM

Jose Altuve (head) is out of the Astros' starting lineup on Wednesday night.

Altuve took a blow to the head Tuesday when he collided with teammate Teoscar Hernandez in shallow right field, but the star second baseman was quickly cleared of a concussion. He'll take a day of rest anyway Wednesday versus the Indians, with Marwin Gonzalez covering second base.
Apr 26 - 3:26 PM

Kyle Seager (hip) remains out of the Mariners' starting lineup on Wednesday.

Seager told reporters Tuesday that his hip feels fine and he tried to talk his way into the starting lineup Wednesday night, but manager Scott Servais will play it safe with his star third baseman. Taylor Motter is at the hot corner and batting fifth Wednesday versus the Tigers.
Apr 26 - 3:24 PM

Mariners placed RHP Felix Hernandez on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

Hernandez experienced fatigue in his right shoulder Tuesday during a rough two-inning outing against the Tigers. He's flown back to Seattle for an MRI, and the results of that exam should tell us more about his recovery timetable. The veteran right-hander holds a 4.73 ERA and 1.58 WHIP through 26 2/3 innings (five starts) this season.
