Marco Scutaro received an epidural injection in his ailing back on Thursday.

Scutaro said it was the second shot he's been administered after the first one didn't work. Giants manager Bruce Bochy retains hope that Scutaro can play by the weekend. Bochy said it's 50-50 odds right now that Scutaro will start the year on the DL and he'd like to make a decision soon to protect the player's retroactive DL days.

A source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the Blue Jays and OF Dayan Viciedo have agreed on a minor league deal.

No terms were known. Viciedo was cut loose by the White Sox but still has some value as a right-handed power hitter. The 25-year-old hit 21 homers in 523 at-bats this past season. With Michael Saunders out for a period of time to start the year, he could see time as a starter with the Jays in the early going if he breaks camp with the club.

Carlos Gonzalez (knee) will begin running the bases next week.

CarGo is recovering from surgery to repair the patella tendon in his left knee last August. The outfielder won't be in the lineup when Cactus League games begin on Wednesday, but he doesn't appear to be too far away from game action. Assuming things go well, Gonzalez will be in the Rockies' lineup on Opening Day.
Feb 28 - 6:31 PM

Troy Tulowitzki (hip) will run the bases next week.

Tulo is recovering from surgery to repair his torn left hip labrum, and the Rockies are taking it slow with their superstar as he returns to action. Tulowitzki has already been taking infield practice this spring, another good sign. Assuming his progress continues, Tulo should be ready to roll for Opening Day.
Feb 28 - 6:29 PM

Matt Wieters (elbow) is set to start at catcher for Sunday's intrasquad game.

It will be the first time Wieters has been behind the dish since last May. While he'll serve as the backstop, Wieters still won't be allowed to throw at 100 percent until March 17. He's slated to catch two innings in Sunday's game. Everything is trending toward the 28-year-old being ready for Opening Day.

The White Sox announced Saturday that Chris Sale suffered an avulsion fracture on his right foot in an accident at his home on Friday.

The early diagnosis is that he's expected to miss three weeks. While it sounds that he avoided a significant injury, it could put his availability for Opening Day in jeopardy. The team will wait for the swelling to subside before determining his status.
Feb 28 - 1:09 PM

Michael Saunders underwent successful surgery on Friday to remove 60% of the meniscus in his left knee and is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks.

Initially, the team feared he'd be sidelined until around the All-Star break, though the tear wasn't as bad as they had feared and they were able to get by simply trimming the meniscus. With a return set around mid-April, the Jays are no longer forced to scrounge up a suitable replacement and will roll with in-house options to cover left field until Saunders is recovered.
Feb 27 - 7:09 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Athletics and Blue Jays are among the teams talking to Dayan Viciedo.

Both clubs have an opening in left field following Michael Saunders' (knee) injury, so it makes sense. Viciedo is a poor defender and has a career .298 OPS, but he's also slugged 60 homers over the last three seasons. His ideal landing spot for fantasy purposes would be in Toronto, where his power would play well at Rogers Centre.
Feb 27 - 5:44 PM

Melvin Upton has been diagnosed with sesamoiditis in his left foot and is expected to miss all of spring training.

Sesamoiditis is inflammation in the bone behind the ball of his foot. Upton will be in a cast for two weeks and a walking boot for 4-6 weeks after that. He won't be allowed to resume baseball activity until at least early April and is expected to be out until at least May 1. It's a tough break for a guy in desperate need of a bounce-back season after hitting just .198/.279/.314 in his first two seasons with the Braves. Eury Perez, Eric Young and Zoilo Almonte are options to fill in for Upton in center field.
Feb 27 - 3:54 PM

Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports that the Angels are not expecting a decision regarding Josh Hamilton's impending suspension anytime soon.

Fletcher adds that it "could be weeks" and the club is "hoping by Opening Day" a decision will be made. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi have reported that Hamilton is likely facing a suspension of at least 25 games following his drug relapse, but it's a complicated process and new commissioner Rob Manfred could show the outfielder some compassion given his efforts to remain sober.
Feb 27 - 2:02 PM

Andrelton Simmons (oblique) did some light throwing and took some dry swings on Friday.

It's a surprise given that he was diagnosed with an oblique strain just a day ago. Simmons will likely continue to slowly build up his hitting progression over the next few days, but it sounds like he won't be sidelined very long at all. The slick-fielding shortstop hit .244/.286/.331 with seven home runs in 146 games last season.
Feb 27 - 1:09 PM

Juan Pierre has officially announced his retirement from baseball.

Pierre, 37, didn't play last season but only now has officially decided to hang up his cleats. It was quite a career for the speedster, as Pierre sported a .295/.343/.361 batting line over his 14 seasons while stealing 614 bases. He never made an All-Star team, but Pierre finished in the top-20 in National League MVP voting twice and won a World Series ring with the Marlins in 2003.
