Josh Hamilton finished 3-for-5 with a home run in the Angels' defeat of the Astros on Saturday.

Hamilton singled in the third inning, hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning, and added another single in the ninth. The 32-year-old outfielder was aiming to get off to a much better start this season after his disappointing 2013, and he's now 9-for-18 (.500) with two home runs and five RBI through his first five games.

Juan Soto crushed a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning on Monday, powering the Nationals past the Yankees in the completion of their May 16th game.

The two sides started play with the score knotted at 3-3 in the sixth inning, and the only scoring on the afternoon was the 19-year-old's two-run blast off of Chad Green in the sixth. Soto finished the day 1-for-2 and is hitting a mighty impressive .316/.407/.608 with six homers and 14 RBI in his first 91 plate appearances at the big league level.

Angels activated OF Kole Calhoun from the 10-day disabled list.

Calhoun has missed most of this month with a strained right oblique but is back in right field and batting ninth Monday. He'll return to an ugly .145/.195/.179 batting line.

Jay Bruce (hip) has been scratched from the Mets' lineup Monday.

Bruce has been dealing with soreness in his hip and will now miss his fourth game out of the last five. Jose Bautista has replaced him in the lineup.

Kevin Kiermaier (thumb) is on track to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday.

It was reported previously that Kiermaier would return on Friday, but he must have talked his way into an earlier return. The outfielder will go through a workout with the Rays on Monday and then be activated the following day assuming all goes well. He's been out since mid-April with a torn ligament in his right thumb and went 7-for-17 (.412) with a triple and a double in five rehab games.
Jun 18 - 5:28 PM

Javier Baez (elbow) could return to the Cubs' lineup Tuesday.

Baez is sitting out Monday after leaving Sunday's game following a hit by pitch on the left elbow, but he didn't need any X-rays and said he's fine. Ben Zobrist is at second base Monday.
Jun 18 - 5:01 PM

Clayton Kershaw (back) said after getting through a three-inning simulated game Monday that he expects to pitch in a game in five days.

Kershaw wouldn't say if that game would be a start in New York against the Mets, but he didn't seem to rule it out, either. The veteran left-hander has made just one start for the Dodgers since May 1, but he has rejoined their rotation without a rehab start before in the past. We'll know more about his status in the coming days.

Tom Murphy is starting at catcher and batting eighth for the Rockies on Monday.

Murphy has started six of seven games since being recalled, including five at catcher. Chris Iannetta and Tony Wolters haven't provided much at the plate on an offense that's struggled, and it appears the Rockies are willing to give Murphy -- who has the best offensive ceiling of the trio -- a long look. Murphy is hitting .300/.333/.400 over his first five games with the big club after slugging 16 homers over 48 games at Triple-A. He needs to be owned in fantasy leagues.

All tests on Carlos Carrasco's injured right elbow came back negative.

Carrasco had to leave Saturday's start against the Twins after he was drilled by a comebacker, but he has avoided a serious injury. He was placed on the disabled list Sunday and will be re-evaluated Wednesday following a few days of treatment. There would seem to be a pretty good chance he could return before the end of the month, but the stiffness and soreness in his elbow will have to go away.
Jun 18 - 4:39 PM

Whit Merrifield (knee) is in the Royals' lineup Monday.

Merrifield exited Sunday's game after fouling a ball off his left knee, but he escaped with merely a bruise. He is in the designated hitter spot Monday, as Adalberto Mondesi is at second base.
Jun 18 - 4:32 PM

Kris Bryant will hit leadoff Monday against the Dodgers.

It will be his third start out of the leadoff spot this season, all three of them coming in the past two weeks. Ben Zobrist hit leadoff on Sunday, but he's in the No. 3 spot Monday.

Major League Baseball has extended the administrative leave for Roberto Osuna for another week through June 25.

It's a paper move with Osuna's legal situation looming. The Blue Jays' closer was arrested May 8 for allegedly assaulting a woman and won't have his next court date until July 9. His lawyer, Domenic Basile, said Monday that his client intends to plead not guilty. It could be a while under there's a resolution here.
