Avisail Garcia underwent successful surgery Tuesday morning to repair a torn labrum and avulsion fracture in his left shoulder.

Garcia suffered the injury last Wednesday when he dove for a ball in the outfielder. He has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2014 season, which is a devastating blow. The good news is that he's just 22 and still has a bright future ahead of him. Alejandro De Aza and Dayan Viciedo should receive regular playing time moving forward, though Jordan Danks should also be in the mix for at-bats.

Athletics activated C/1B Stephen Vogt from the family medical leave list.

Vogt has been away from the team since Saturday. The A's optioned Matt McBride to Triple-A Nashville to clear a spot for his return.

Cardinals placed RHP Trevor Rosenthal on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 25, with right shoulder inflammation.

Specifically, he's dealing with a rotator cuff injury. Rosenthal walked three batters in his most recent appearance on Friday and hasn't shown any signs of turning things around since being removed from the closer role. He owns an ugly 5.13 ERA and 2.04 WHIP over 40 appearances this season. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined, but he was already demoted to a lower-leverage role. The Cardinals figure to look to the trade market for bullpen help before August 1.

Blue Jays acquired OF Melvin Upton and cash considerations from the Padres for RHP Hansel Rodriguez.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports hears that the Padres will cover all but $5 million of the roughly $22 million remaining on Upton's contract. The 31-year-old has enjoyed a resurgent season with the Padres and will provide some depth and versatility to the Blue Jays' outfield. While the ballpark change is a positive, he might lose a couple of starts a week and probably won't run as much. His fantasy value takes a bit of a dip with the trade. Since the Padres are in Toronto this week, Upton will just have to switch dugouts on Tuesday.

J.D. Martinez (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Toledo.

Martinez will be eased in as the DH as he makes his way back from a non-displaced fracture of the radial neck of his right elbow. He admitted Monday that he'll have to deal with pain for the rest of the season, but he wants to make it back with the Tigers still in the mix. "My bat worries me more than my throwing," said Martinez. "Timing-wise and arm-wise. I feel it puts more stress on my elbow hitting than it does throwing."

Lorenzo Cain (hamstring) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Omaha.

Cain, who has been out for about a month with a left hamstring strain, got the green light after doing some running over the weekend. Barring a setback, he appears on track for a return around the end of the month.

Scooter Gennett singled and ripped a solo home run in Monday's victory over the Diamondbacks.

Gennett got the scoring going with a deep blast to center field in the first inning. It was one of four dingers the Brewers had on the night, as Jonathan Villar, Martin Maldonado and Andy Wilkins also went deep. Gennett has already tied his career high with nine home runs.

Justin Verlander held the mighty Red Sox offense to one run over six innings in Monday's 4-2 victory.

The Red Sox ran up his pitch count as they do with most opposing hurlers, as Verlander needed 110 pitches to get through his six frames. The right-hander held the Red Sox in check, though, as he gave up just five hits and two walks while striking out five. Verlander has yielded just six runs over his last five starts since his blowout outing against the Indians. He'll face the Astros his next time out.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said after Monday's game that Jake Lamb is dealing with a bruised left hand.

Lamb isn't expected to undergo an MRI, but Hale said that they'll try to give him some rest and treatment. Consider him day-to-day. Lamb went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Monday and is now hitless over his last five games.

Aaron Sanchez struck out seven batters across seven shutout innings in Monday's 4-2 victory over the Padres.

Sanchez was dominant yet again, holding the Padres to just three hits -- two singles -- while walking two. He's yielded only 113 hits and 39 walks over 132 1/3 innings this season, good for a 1.15 WHIP to go along with his 2.72 ERA. Sanchez is now 11-1 on the season and hasn't given up more than two runs in any of his last seven starts. It's possible he'll hit a wall at some point or even be moved to the bullpen, but Sanchez hasn't shown any signs of slowing down yet. He'll get the Orioles next.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that moving Ivan Nova has become "the next priority" for the Yankees following the Aroldis Chapman deal.

ESPN's Buster Olney reported earlier in the day Monday that team executives have been pushing for a trade involving Nova, so things could come together quickly now that the Chapman deal is finalized. "They're focused on him," a major-league source told Feinsand. "They're looking at the guys with expiring contracts first - though not Beltran right now." Nova, an impending free agent, has posted a 4.65 ERA and 72/22 K/BB ratio over 93 innings this season. In a weak market for starters, he could draw some interest as rotation depth.

Joe Panik (concussion) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Sacramento.

Panik had to briefly halt his minor league rehab assignment last week, but he's back on track now and could join the Giants by the end of the week if all goes well. The 25-year-old has been out since June 27 due to concussion symptoms.
