Mets acquired RHP Zachary Thornton and a player to be named from the Mets in exchange for 1B Ike Davis.

The 25-year-old right-hander spent the 2013 season between the rotation and the bullpen across three minor league levels, compiling a 2.63 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 90/12 K/BB ratio in 75 1/3 innings. With the toll that injuries have taken in the Mets bullpen, he could quickly work his way into the mix with the big league club.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Astros are looking to trade Chris Carter.

Carter has 21 home runs in 93 games this season but is also sporting a weak .212 batting average and .291 on-base percentage. The 27-year-old will be arbitration-eligible for the first time heading into 2015 and is under contractual control through 2018, so Houston will want something fairly significant in return.

Lucas Duda singled in a run and launched a two-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Phillies.

That gives Duda seven longballs this month and five over his last eight games. The 28-year-old is hitting just .262 for the season, but it's come along with a .358 OBP, 19 homers and 60 RBI. He's currently on pace for a 29-homer, 90-RBI campaign.
Jul 30 - 4:06 PM

Tanner Roark delivered seven innings of one-run ball Wednesday in the Nationals' 4-3 defeat of the Marlins.

It was another terrific outing from the 27-year-old right-hander, who is now 11-6 on the season with a 2.74 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. Roark allowed only three Miami hits and two walks while striking out seven. Drew Storen nearly blew it in the ninth inning -- yielding two runs on a walk and three hits -- but he managed to close it out for his first save of the season. Roark will face the Orioles at home next.

ESPN's Jayson Stark reports that the Mariners are "out" on Marlon Byrd.

Stark says there are "still some legs to rumblings" that the Yankees could go after Byrd, but they're wary of the outfielder's 2016 vesting option. The Royals had also previously been reported as a possible landing spot but no longer appear in the running. The market for the veteran outfield looks to be drying up.
Jul 30 - 4:01 PM

Yovani Gallardo yielded just three hits over seven scoreless frames in Wednesday's 5-0 victory over the Rays.

Gallardo gave up just three singles, walked one and struck out five. Though he's dealt with his bouts of inconsistency, the right-hander has tossed 14 2/3 scoreless innings over his last two outings. He'll take a nifty 3.38 ERA into a home start against the Giants next week.
Jul 30 - 3:57 PM

Eric Chavez has retired from baseball.

Chavez has battled a nagging knee issue this season and the 36-year-old has decided to hang it up rather than continue rehabbing. He won six Gold Gloves and was one of the better players in the AL during the early 2000s. Injuries wrecked a big chunk of his career, but he deserves credit for making it back to be a useful player for a few years before the injury bug ultimately did him in. "I'm very lucky," Chavez said Tuesday. "I just enjoyed competing and being on the field. There's nothing like winning at the major-league level."
Jul 30 - 3:47 PM

Wade Miley threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings Wednesday in the Diamondbacks' 5-4 win over the Reds.

Miley surrendered seven hits and walked four, but he was able to work out of multiple threats against the struggling Cincinnati offense despite recording only one strikeout. The left-hander moved to 7-7 on the season with a 4.14 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. Arizona has told teams that Miley is not available for trade, so his next start will be Tuesday against the Royals.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that a trade sending Jon Lester to the Orioles is "not close."

Rosenthal didn't rule out something getting done, but it appears the two sides aren't as close to crossing the finish line as previously reported. MLB.com's Peter Gammons adds that the Red Sox still have "plenty" of alternatives if they're not able to work something out with the O's.
Jul 30 - 3:27 PM

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Cubs have an agreement in place to acquire Felix Doubront from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.

Doubront has fallen out of favor in Boston, but he should get his wish to start again with the Cubs. The lefty holds a career 4.82 ERA, but he's just 26 and has a career 8.1 K/9 rate, so it's probably worth a shot for Chicago to see if he can right the ship in the National League.
Jul 30 - 3:14 PM

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald is hearing that there's "zero chance" the Marlins trade for John Lackey.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reported earlier Wednesday that the Fish were talking to the Red Sox about a deal involving the veteran righty, but apparently those negotiations didn't get very far. Morosi's colleague, Ken Rosenthal has said there's a "very good chance" Lackey is dealt somewhere. It just apparently won't be to Miami.

Angel Pagan (back) could begin a rehab assignment on Thursday if his full workout on Wednesday goes well.

It's not clear how many rehab games he'll need, but Pagan has progressed well over the past week. He should be ready to rejoin the Giants' outfield in early August if he can avoid a setback. The veteran outfielder has been on the shelf since mid-June with a back injury.
