Mets purchased the contract of OF Bobby Abreu from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Abreu, 40, hasn't been in the big leagues since 2012, but he has been performing well for Las Vegas to start the season. Over 45 plate appearances, Abreu slashed .395/.489/.579 with more walks than strikeouts, seven to five. The Mets optioned OF Andrew Brown to Las Vegas to make room for Abreu on the roster.

Yankees designated 2B Brian Roberts for assignment.

Roberts managed to stay healthy this season, but he hit just .237/.300/.360 over 91 games and the Yankees decided to upgrade at second base with Stephen Drew. The 36-year-old will clear waivers and try to catch on elsewhere for the remainder of the season.

Red Sox acquired INF/OF Kelly Johnson from the Yankees for SS Stephen Drew.

Johnson was a popular fantasy sleeper in the spring, but unfortunately he kept dozing after Opening Day. He ended up hitting just .219 with a .304 OBP and six home runs in 77 games for the Yankees. Currently on the disabled list with a strained left groin, Boston won't rush him back. Slotted behind Brock Holt and Dustin Pedroia in the infield, and Shane Victorino and Allen Craig in the outfield, the tank of Johnson's 2014 fantasy value has run dry.

Yankees acquired SS Stephen Drew from the Red Sox for INF Kelly Johnson.

Drew's bizarre season continues. He was on Boston's World Series championship squad last year, turned down a qualifying offer over the winter, and sat out the first month-plus of the season before returning to the Red Sox. Batting a gruesome .176 with four home runs and 11 RBIs, Boston pulled the plug, and in so doing consummated their first trade with the hated Yankees since Aug. 13, 1997, when New York shipped Tony Armas and a PTBNL to Boston for Randy Brown and Mike Stanley. Drew won't halt Derek Jeter's retirement party. Instead, he'll play primarily second base.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Braves have acquired Emilio Bonifacio and James Russell from the Cubs.

The Cubs will receive catching prospect Victor Caratini in the deal. Bonifacio will be a jack-of-all-trades for the Braves, filling in at second base some and in the outfield. Russell gives them the left-hander reliever that they've been looking for.

Twins signed C Kurt Suzuki to a two-year, $12 million contract extension.

There's also a vesting option for 2017 based on plate appearances. The Twins had an opportunity to sell high on Suzuki during an All-Star season, but they decided to lock him up long-term instead. That means Josmil Pinto isn't going to take over at catcher in Minnesota anytime soon.
Jul 31 - 4:27 PM

Jack Curry of YES Network reports that the Yankees have acquired Martin Prado from the Diamondbacks.

First base prospect Peter O'Brien is expected to head to the Diamondbacks in the deal. Prado has hit just .270/.317/.370 with five homers this season, but he's been much better in the past and gives the Yankees another option at second and third base.

MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports that the Marlins have acquired Jarred Cosart and Enrique Hernandez from the Astros.

Colin Moran, Jake Marisnick and a compensation pick are expected to head to the Astors in the deal. Cosart has posted a 3.57 ERA over his first 30 major league starts and is under control for a few more years, but Houston probably did well to sell him off for what was a nice return.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Tigers have acquired David Price from the Rays.

It's part of a three-team swap that also involves the Mariners, as suggested earlier by Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. The Rays will get shortstop prospect Nick Franklin from Seattle and left-handed starter Drew Smyly from Detroit. The Mariners get center fielder Austin Jackson. And the Tigers wind up with another ace to add to a rotation that already includes Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez, and Justin Verlander.

Red Sox right-handed pitching prospect Anthony Ranaudo will make his major league debut against the Yankees on Friday.

One benefit of blowing up the major league team -- trading pitchers Jon Lester, Jake Peavy, John Lackey, Felix Doubront, and Andrew Miller -- is it allows the Red Sox to give auditions to high-upside prospects like Ranaudo. The right-hander has been outstanding at the Triple-A level over the last two seasons, going 15-5 with a 2.53 ERA across 149-plus innings. He has long-term No. 3 starter upside, and short-term mixed-league flier potential.
Jul 31 - 3:46 PM

According to ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes, shortstop Stephen Drew has been traded to the Yankees.

It's a rare swap between the two bitter rivals. Drew has struggled to the tune of a .176/.255/.328 slash line since returning to the major leagues on June 1, but he plays steady defense at shortstop and there's reason to expect that he'll hit better down the stretch. Kelly Johnson is headed to Boston in a straight one-for-one swap.
Jul 31 - 3:44 PM

Nationals acquired SS Asdrubal Cabrera from the Indians for SS Zach Walters.

The two-time All-Star has regressed to a .246/.305/.386 slash line, but he's still just 28 and owns a career .270/.331/.410 line. The price was right for Washington, which leveraged Cleveland's fear of allowing Cabrera to walk for nothing at season's end. With Ryan Zimmerman on the shelf with a severe hamstring strain, Cabrera should be able to pick up at-bats backing up Anthony Rendon, Danny Espinosa and Ian Desmond.
