James Shields was quite effective in Tuesday's start, allowing two runs (one earned) over six innings as the Royals defeated the Indians 8-2.

Shields got his second victory of the season, allowing only six hits and a walk while striking out nine. He now carries a 1.91 ERA with a 35/7 K/BB ratio through five starts. Shields can become a free agent after the season and is pitching his way towards a big payday. Shields will try to keep the good times rolling against the Orioles next.

Kendrys Morales slugged a walk-off solo home run in Wednesday's 3-2 victory over the Athletics.

Moments after Justin Smoak tied the game with a two-run shot off closer Santiago Casilla, Morales followed suit with a blast of his own to send the fans home happy. He went 1-for-3 with a walk in the ballgame and now owns a .254 batting average with 18 longballs and 54 RBI on the season.

Rockies acquired RHP Pat Neshek from the Phillies for INF Jose Gomez, RHP J.D. Hammer and RHP Alejandro Requena.

The Nationals, Dodgers and Red Sox had all previously been linked to Neshek, but Colorado ultimately comes away with the prize. The veteran reliever has put in a sparkling season to date, pitching to a 1.12 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 45/5 K/BB ratio across 40 1/3 innings. This fine body of work earned him a berth at the All-Star Game.

The Braves are expected to option Dansby Swanson to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Swanson has had a few nice moments this season, but has struggled by-and-large. Over the course of 324 at-bats, the 23-year-old shortstop is hitting a mere .213/.287/.312 with six homers and 35 RBI. Johan Carmago will likely see the majority of shortstop at-bats moving forward with Swanson heading down to hone his craft.

Stephen Strasburg (arm) will be placed on the 10-day disabled list.

Strasburg will miss his Saturday start against the Rockies -- top pitching prospect Erick Fedde will toe the rubber for that one -- but the Nationals are hopeful that he will be able to return from the disabled list when first eligible. He initially came down with discomfort in his right forearm during his outing on Sunday.

Paul Blackburn rattled off seven scoreless innings against the Blue Jays on Wednesday but had to settle for a no-decision as the bullpen blew the game in the ninth.

He gave up just two base hits and issued three walks while notching three strikeouts. Only two runners could even reach second base against Blackburn. He was making his fifth start of the season and now owns a sparkling 2.25 ERA despite a microscopic strikeout rate. He has fanned 12 batters and walked 10 in 32 innings of work.
Jul 26 - 10:23 PM

Santiago Casilla surrendered three runs on a pair of homers and was charged with a blown save and a loss to the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Tasked with protecting a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, Casilla gave up the ghost just about as quickly as humanly possible. He walked Josh Donaldson to lead off the inning, then served up a two-run homer to Justin Smoak to tie the game. The next batter, Kendrys Morales, whacked a walk-off solo shot to end the ballgame. The bad game gives Casilla five losses and six blown saves on the season, against two wins and 16 saves. He has a 4.66 ERA in 36 2/3 innings.
Jul 26 - 10:14 PM

Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post reports that the Nationals will call up pitching prospect Erick Fedde to start in place of Stephen Strasburg (arm) on Saturday.

Strasburg left his last start with discomfort in his right forearm. The initial hope was that he would not have to miss a start, but all signs are pointing to Fedde taking his next turn through the rotation against the Rockies on Saturday. The 24-year-old right-hander ranked as Baseball America's No. 52 prospect in the game prior to the 2017 season. Splitting time between Double- and Triple-A, Fedde has pitched to a 3.72 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 69/21 K/BB ratio across 27 appearances (11 starts).
Jul 26 - 9:24 PM

Howie Kendrick left Wednesday's game against the Astros due to left hand soreness.

Kendrick was hit by a pitch on the left hand in the third inning and came out one frame later. Consider him day-to-day for the time being. He will be reevaluated on Thursday.
Jul 26 - 9:12 PM

J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in Wednesday's 10-3 win over the Braves.

Martinez thumped a two-run homer off Luke Jackson in the fourth inning, then hit yet another two-run bomb off Ian Krol in the eighth. In five games since being traded over to the Diamondbacks from the Tigers, the outfielder has gone 4-for-17 with three homers and seven RBI. He was slashing .305/.388/.630 with 16 homers and 39 RBI in 57 games with the Tigers prior to getting shipped down to the desert.
Jul 26 - 8:31 PM

Chris Sale struck out 11 while scattering three hits over seven shutout innings in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Mariners.

Two of the three hits Sale surrendered went for doubles, but the Mariners were unable to capitalize on their extremely limited opportunities. With his 11 strikeouts on Wednesday, the ace southpaw is now up to 14 double-digit strikeout games for the season. Those 14 games are the most since Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson both achieved the feat back in 2002. Sale will try to keep it going when he brings a 2.37 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 211/27 K/BB ratio (148 1/3 innings) into a home start against the Indians next time he toes the rubber. He is the frontrunner to win the AL Cy Young at this juncture.
Jul 26 - 7:19 PM

Miguel Sano (hand) is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.

Sano was hit by a pitch in the left hand on Monday and initially sat in Tuesday's game before coming on as a pinch-hitter. X-rays have come back negative on his hand, but the Twins are taking no chances with their budding star third baseman. Eduardo Escobar will man the hot corner in his place on Wednesday and is hitting fourth.
