White Sox activated 2B Gordon Beckham from the 15-day disabled list.

Beckham is finally ready for his regular-season debut after missing nearly four weeks with an oblique strain. The 27-year-old second baseman batted just .267/.322/.372 with five home runs and 24 RBI in 103 games last summer, and might not get regular playing time out of the gate with Conor Gillaspie and Marcus Semien playing well. Beckham did not hit well on his minor league rehab assignment.

Fox Sports' Jon Morosi has reported that the Reds and Johnny Cueto have not made progress in extension talks.

Cueto will make $10 million dollars this season and is slated to hit free agency in the coming winter. He was the runner-up for the NL Cy Young in 2014. The Reds' ace missed a recent portion of spring training to attend to a private matter in the Dominican Republic, but that has no bearing on his extension talks.

Justin Verlander (triceps) threw from 60 feet on Wednesday.

According to reports, he was tossing at around 60 percent and continued to feel slight soreness. Verlander's been ruled out from game action on Friday. He has not, however, been ruled out from making his first start of the regular season on April 8. This seems like a long-shot given the way his recovery has been progressing. A trip to the disabled list is also a possibility and is looking increasingly likely.

The third opinion on Anthony Rendon's left knee injury has confirmed an MCL sprain.

Rendon injured his left knee on March 9. It was initially thought to be relatively minor, but the strain kept him out of action in the weeks that followed. He sought a third opinion from Dr. Steven Singleton on Tuesday. Rendon will begin the season on the DL and once the strain starts to feel better, he'll ramp up his baseball activities. There is no current timetable for his return.

According to ESPN.com's Jim Bowden, the Mets have signed OF Juan Lagares to a four-year contract extension.

The deal's not quite final yet, though it sounds close. Bowden writes that it's expected to be worth more than $20 million and will include a club option. Already a legitimate defender, Lagares has slashed his way to a .345/.400/.655 line this spring. Don't expect him to hit like that for an extended amount of time. At age 26 and coming off a .281/.321/.382 line over 452 plate appearances in 2014, it's possible that he'll carry over at least some of his spring power, though, making him an an interesting name to keep in mind late in mixed drafts.

Astros optioned 1B Jon Singleton to Triple-A Fresno.

Singleton hit just .213/.288/.340 during spring ball. He offers some pop in the bat (13 home runs in 310 at-bats in 2014). Singleton is still just 23 years old and has room to grow. Should he see a call-up later this season, he'll have value in deeper AL-only leagues.

Mark Canha launched a three-run homer on Tuesday, leading the Athletics to a 13-10 victory over the Angels in Cactus League action.

Canha and teammate Luke Carlin each left the yard against Angels closer Huston Street in the third inning. Canha, a Rule 5 Draft selection, has earned his way onto the A's roster this spring by hitting .275 with five homers and 12 RBI. But it will require an injury to Billy Butler or Ike Davis though for him to find his way into significant at-bats.

Rays acquired RHP Erasmo Ramirez from the Mariners in exchange for LHP Mike Montgomery.

Ramirez wasn't going to make the Mariners' Opening Day roster and was out of options, but he's a nice little under-the-radar pickup for the Rays. The right-hander will likely slide right into Tampa's rotation with Alex Cobb (forearm), Matt Moore (elbow), Drew Smyly (shoulder) and Alex Colome (pneumonia) slated to begin the season on the disabled list. Ramirez could have some fantasy value in deeper formats.
Mar 31 - 10:19 PM

Jose Abreu went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI as the White Sox topped the Dodgers 2-1 in Cactus League action on Tuesday.

Abreu has been on an absolute tear all spring, hitting .519 (27-for-52) with a homer and eight RBI. It's scary to think that he could be even better than the .317/.383/.581 he slashed with 36 bombs and 107 RBI in his first season stateside in 2014. He shouldn't last past the middle of the first round in all fantasy drafts.
Mar 31 - 9:30 PM

The Blue Jays have named Drew Hutchison their Opening Day starter.

R.A. Dickey and Mark Buehrle have a big experience edge on Hutchison, but the young right-hander is the easy choice here. Hutchison posted a 4.48 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and a 184/60 K/BB ratio for the Jays last season and could take another step forward in 2015.
Mar 31 - 8:01 PM

Coco Crisp (elbow) is likely to begin the season on the disabled list after feeling soreness in his right elbow while batting in a minor league game Tuesday.

Crisp had experienced improvement after being given a cortisone injection a week ago, but he hit another bump in the road Tuesday. He hasn't played in a Cactus League game since March 23, so the A's can backdate a disabled list stint. There's no guarantee he'll be ready to go when his 15 days are up, however. Oakland is now expected to be without both of their corner outfielders on Opening Day, as Josh Reddick is sidelined with a strained oblique.
Mar 31 - 7:57 PM

Devin Mesoraco (quad) is tentatively scheduled to return to the lineup on Wednesday.

"I'm optimistically thinking that he'll be ready to play tomorrow," Reds manager Bryan Price said Tuesday morning. "[What I don't want to do with injured players] is to put them in there and find out they can't go, or shouldn't go." Mesoraco's left quad tightened up on him during Sunday's game, but he's improved since then and is expected to be fine for Opening Day.
