Starling Marte (back) is unavailable on Tuesday.

Marte left Saturday's game against the Cardinals with tightness in his lower back and has not played since. The left fielder is still considered day-to-day.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said that the chances of re-signing Edwin Encarnacion are looking dim.

"If there's a way [to bring him back], I don't see it. I don't think [Encarnacion's agent Paul Kinzer] sees it either but we haven't stopped trying," Atkins said. The Indians and Rangers are two teams linked to Encarnacion, though USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported earlier on Wednesday that the Rangers may not have the money to bring him into the fold. The veteran slugger looks unlikely to sign with a team before the end of the Winter Meetings.

Nationals acquired OF Adam Eaton from the White Sox for RHP Lucas Giolito, RHP Reynaldo Lopez, and RHP Dane Dunning.

Washington was determined to make a splash at this week's Winter Meetings, and this is a big one. Eaton was a 6.0 fWAR player for the White Sox in 2016, slashing .284/.362/.428 with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 157 games while playing strong defense in right field. He won't rate as well in center with the Nationals, but it's a tremendous addition to the lineup and the 28-year-old is on a very team-friendly contract that can potentially run through 2021. That's why it took three of the best young starting pitching prospects in the game to acquire him.

White Sox acquired RHP Lucas Giolito, RHP Reynaldo Lopez, and RHP Dane Dunning from the Nationals for OF Adam Eaton.

Giolito's prospect stock has somewhat cratered over the last year, but he's still very much the centerpiece of this deal and represents a big-time upgrade to the White Sox farm system -- what might suddenly be considered the top farm system in baseball. Giolito struggled in his first taste of the majors in 2016 and figures to open the 2017 season in the minors, but we'll see him on the south side of Chicago soon enough. And the tremendous upside isn't gone yet. Lopez and Dunning are also top-flight young right-handers. It's another huge haul for White Sox GM Rick Hahn.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Orioles have spoken to the Royals about Jarrod Dyson.

It's becoming very likely that Dyson is moved, and the Orioles and Athletics seem to be his most aggressive suitors. There's also been talk of interest from the Cardinals and Rangers. Dyson owns an ugly .260/.325/.353 career batting line at the major league level, but he's a great defensive outfielder and excellent baserunner. He'd fit well on pretty much any MLB roster, though probably not in an everyday role.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, the Mariners are discussing a trade for Giants starter Chris Heston.

Heston was a nice innings-eater for San Francisco in 2015, but he allowed six runs in just five innings at the major league level this past year while fighting through oblique issues. It'd be a buy-low type of situation for Seattle, though Heston has never been considered a great talent. He turns 29 years old next April.

According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the Yankees have expressed interest in free agent reliever Sergio Romo.

Shea says "several teams" have also made the call. Romo battled elbow problems in 2016 and only pitched 30 2/3 regular-season innings for the Giants, but he still managed a 2.64 ERA and boasts a career ERA of 2.58 with a career K/9 of 10.2. The veteran righty will turn 34 years old next March.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports the Marlins have signed catcher A.J. Ellis to a one-year, $2.5 million deal.

Ellis will head to Miami to act as J.T. Realmuto's backup catcher. The veteran hit just .216/.301/.298 in 2016 between the Dodgers and Phillies, but his clubhouse rep is exceptional and he's had some decent seasons in the past.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that Tyson Ross' asking price is in the $9-11 million range.

And according to Grant, that may not include incentives. The Padres opted to non-tender Ross rather than give him a similar salary through arbitration, but some team might be willing to take a chance even as he's making his way back from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. There's just not much out there in free agency.

Agent Scott Boras said Wednesday that his client Matt Wieters might not sign until January.

Wieters' market has been rather quiet after he put up an underwhelming .711 OPS (87 OPS+) in 2016 while also taking a step back behind the plate. The Orioles didn't make him a qualifying offer this time, so at least he doesn't have draft pick compensation attached. Boras said he has talked to several teams, but he appears content with waiting out the market.

Yankees signed DH Matt Holliday to a one-year, $13 million contract.

The deal was reported over the weekend and it's now official. Holliday turns 37 next month and is coming off a year where he slugged 20 homers with a .782 OPS in 110 games while missing significant time with a fractured thumb. The plan calls for him to serve as the primary designated hitter, but he could also see occasional time in the outfield and at first base. He could have a better chance to stay healthy in this situation and we wouldn't rule out a return to relevancy in mixed fantasy leagues while playing in the AL East.
Dec 7 - 3:04 PM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday that he's planning to have Huston Street, Cam Bedrosian, and Andrew Bailey compete for the closer job in spring training.

Street would seem to have the edge, but he isn't going to have the job handed to him after an injury-plagued season where he posted an ugly 6.45 ERA and 14/12 K/BB ratio over 22 1/3 innings. The 33-year-old required minor knee surgery in August, but he's expected to be ready for spring training. Bedrosian is the closer of the future here, but Bailey had a strong finish in the role.
