Carlos Gomez (back) is not in the Brewers' lineup Wednesday.

Gomez exited Tuesday's game with lower back tightness, an ailment that he first felt when he woke up Tuesday morning. He is considered day-to-day. The outfielder should also soon find out about his suspension appeal. Elian Herrera is in center field and leading off Wednesday.

Michael Pineda was dominant in a win against the Blue Jays on Tuesday, tossing eight shutout innings.

On 101 pitches, Pineda scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six batters. Three of the hits were doubles, but all came with two outs and Pineda easily saw his way out of danger. The right-hander now has a 2.97 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and a stellar 38/3 K/BB ratio in 39 1/3 innings. Pineda's next opponent, the Orioles, will be loath to face him in a matinee in the Bronx.
May 5 - 10:30 PM

Marlon Byrd helped the Reds defeat the Pirates on Tuesday, doubling and homering to knock in four runs.

Byrd pushed the Reds' lead to 4-1 in the third inning with a two-run home run off of Jeff Locke. He provided insurance in the ninth inning with a two-run double, making it a 7-1 ballgame. Byrd got off to an abysmal start, carrying a .441 OPS as recently as April 29, but has started to pick things up lately. He's now batting .193/.226/.364 with four home runs and 13 RBI.
May 5 - 10:15 PM

Mookie Betts provided all of the offense the Red Sox needed on Tuesday, hitting two solo home runs in a shutout win over the Rays.

The game was scoreless until Betts clubbed a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth off of Drew Smyly. He added a second solo shot in the eighth off of Ernesto Frieri. Betts has otherwise been treading water offensively, batting .234/.306/.411 with four home runs, 17 RBI, and five stolen bases.
May 5 - 10:03 PM

Shelby Miller needed only 99 pitches to wrap up a shutout against the Phillies on Tuesday, improving his record to 4-1.

Sure, it was against the Phillies, but a 99-pitch shutout is always impressive. Miller held the Phillies to three hits and a walk while fanning eight. Miller, acquired from the Cardinals in the Jason Heyward trade last November, has done a terrific job in six starts for the Braves, sporting a 1.66 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 31/13 K/BB ratio in 38 innings. He'll toe the rubber in Cincinnati against the Reds next.
May 5 - 9:51 PM

Bartolo Colon pitched effectively into the eighth inning, earning his fifth win of the season to help the Mets take down the Orioles on Tuesday.

Colon was working on a shutout until Manny Machado lifted a solo home run to left-center with one out in the eighth inning. He got one more out, then was taken out of the game. The right-hander scattered six hits in total while issuing no walks and striking out nine. The 41-year-old has been in top form through six starts, sporting a terrific 2.90 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and a 36/1 K/BB ratio in 40 1/3 innings. Colon will go for win number six at Wrigley Field against the Cubs next.
May 5 - 9:36 PM

Stephen Strasburg exited Tuesday's game against the Marlins with an apparent injury.

Strasburg labored through three innings and 64 pitches before Doug Fister pinch-hit for him. Nationals' broadcasters were speculating that it might be Strasburg's back, but that's just speculation at this point. The team should pass along concrete details shortly.
May 5 - 8:53 PM

Tuesday's contest between the Rockies and Diamondbacks has been postponed due to rain.

This is the second game in a row that's been washed out in the series. The two teams will attempt to make up the contest on Wednesday as part of a double-header, with the first game scheduled for 3:10 ET and the second to follow 20-30 minutes after its conclusion.
May 5 - 7:49 PM

Padres placed RHP Brandon Morrow on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 3, with right shoulder inflammation.

Big blow for Morrow and the Padres. The right-hander had been superb through the first month of the 2015 campaign, posting a 2.73 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 23/7 K/BB ratio in 33 innings. Injuries have limited Morrow to fewer than 20 starts in each of the last two seasons, but none of them have been shoulder-related. There's no current timetable for his return, though Morrow himself indicated that he believes that the disabled list stint is a precautionary measure and that he should be able to get back on the field when he's eligible to return in late May.
May 5 - 6:49 PM

Marco Gonzales (pectoral) is scheduled to return to the Triple-A Memphis rotation on Saturday.

Gonzales has been on the shelf since April 22 with a sore left pectoral muscle. If he pitches well on Saturday, the Cardinals might go ahead and insert the 23-year-old left-hander into their starting rotation next week. There's a vacancy with Adam Wainwright (heel) ruled out for the remainder of the 2015 season, and Gonzales is capable of providing a good amount of fantasy production in that spot.
May 5 - 5:43 PM

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times confirms that Alex Cobb has a partial ligament tear in his right elbow.

Cobb is going to try to pitch through it, but pitchers who suffer torn elbow ligaments almost always wind up undergoing Tommy John surgery. Cobb, 27, posted a 2.87 ERA, 1.136 WHIP, and 149/47 K/BB ratio over 166 1/3 innings last season. It's obviously a really bad situation for the Rays, who are off to a decent start in 2015.
May 5 - 5:36 PM

Greg Holland (pectoral) will be activated Wednesday.

The initial plan called for Holland to be activated Tuesday, but the Royals will give their closer one extra day of rest before throwing him back into the fire. Holland has been on the shelf since April 18 with a pectoral strain. He'll push Wade Davis back into a setup role.
