Braves signed RHP Cody Scarpetta to a minor league contract.

A former Brewers farmhand, Scarpetta had been with the independent league Lancaster Barnstormers, where he posted a 5.13 ERA over eight starts. The 25-year-old has been assignment to High-A Lynchburg for now but should eventually make his way up to Triple-A Gwinnett to serve as depth.

Tony Watson is expected to serve as the Pirates' closer in the wake of Saturday's trade sending Mark Melancon to the Nationals.

Watson has been nothing short of exceptional over six seasons in the Pirates bullpen, compiling a 2.48 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 8.1 K/9. He has five career saves under his belt already and should pile them up in a hurry over the final few months of the season. Should he falter, Neftali Feliz has prior closing experience and could be considered for the ninth-inning gig.

Royals acquired OF Billy Burns from the Athletics for OF Brett Eibner.

The speedy outfielder fell out of favor with the Athletics after opening the year as their starting center fielder and leadoff hitter. He hit just .234/.270/.303 with 14 stolen bases before his demotion to Triple-A. The Royals will certainly find ways to utilize his blazing speed.
Jul 30 - 3:57 PM

Nationals acquired RHP Mark Melancon from the Pirates for LHP Felipe Rivero and LHP Taylor Hearn.

Though the Nationals missed out in their pursuit of Aroldis Chapman, they managed to land the lockdown closer that they so desperately were seeking on the trade market. Melancon, who is set to hit free agency after this season, owns a minuscule 1.51 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 38/9 K/BB ratio across 41 2/3 innings this season.
Jul 30 - 3:39 PM

Athletics placed LHP Rich Hill on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 20, with a blister on his left hand.

Hill wasn't going to start again for the A's before the trade deadline, so there's really no harm in better utilizing his roster spot. There remains a very high likelihood that he's wearing a new uniform when August begins.
Jul 30 - 3:00 PM

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Nationals are focused on acquiring closer Mark Melancon from the Pirates.

There are multiple teams chasing after the Pirates stopper, and he would be an instant upgrade to the struggling Jonathan Papelbon in the Nationals bullpen. Melancon owns a stellar 1.51 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 38/9 K/BB ratio across 41 2/3 innings while converting 30 saves.
Jul 30 - 1:56 PM

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that Derek Norris is a near-lock to be moved before the trade deadline.

Rosenthal also notes that Norris is a much more likely target for the Rangers than Jonathan Lucroy would be. The 27-year-old is only hitting .204/.263/.279 on the season, though he does have 12 homers, 33 RBI and five stolen bases. The Padres want to move him to create a spot for Austin Hedges to share the catching duties with Christian Bethancourt.
Jul 30 - 1:20 PM

Yulieski Gurriel has had his visa approved and will debut with the Gulf Coast League Astros on Saturday.

The 32-year-old Cuban slugger is expected to need a couple of weeks of at-bats in the minor leagues before joining the Astros in mid-August. He signed a five-year, $47.5 million deal with the Astros last week and is expected to start at third base once he arrives.
Jul 30 - 12:41 PM

Max Scherzer held the Giants to one run in seven innings as the Nationals won 4-1 on Friday.

He fanned six while walking two and giving up five base hits. He jumped over Jose Fernandez to retake the major league lead with 187 strikeouts in 148 2/3 innings. Scherzer is now 11-6 with a 2.85 ERA. Next on the docket is a Tuesday start in Arizona.
Jul 30 - 2:06 AM

Rick Porcello gave up only two runs in a dominant complete game five-hitter to lead the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Angels on Friday.

He fanned three batters without issuing any walks to raise his record to an impressive 14-2. The win puts him in a four-way tie for the major league lead. Only three starting pitchers have a better walk rate than Porcello this year. He will take his 3.47 ERA into a matchup with the Mariners on Wednesday.
Jul 30 - 1:22 AM

Junior Guerra almost went the distance Friday against the Pirates, allowing just one run over 8 2/3 innings as part of a 3-1 victory.

Guerra entered the ninth with a chance at his first career shutout (and complete game), but he allowed the first two batters to reach base before a run eventually scored on a fielder’s choice. He then gave up a single to Starling Marte before getting the hook. While Guerra ran out of gas at the end, it was still an excellent outing. He gave up just four hits and one walk while striking out five batters. The 31-year-old journeyman now owns a surprising 2.70 ERA and 85/34 K/BB ratio in 103 1/3 innings through 16 starts this season. He could be an interesting trade chip for Milwaukee.
Jul 30 - 1:07 AM

Rougned Odor finished 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers in a win over the Royals on Friday.

It was the second multi-homer game of his career. The first one was a legitimate blast, but the second just barely eked over the right field fence. But it all counts the same in the box score. He’s now up to 21 homers on the year to go along with 54 RBI, 10 steals, and a .282/.301/.508 batting line.
