Astros signed RHP Jose Veras to a minor league contract.

Veras was released by the Cubs last week but has landed back with the club with which he had the most success. The veteran reliever put up an 8.10 ERA over just 13 1/3 innings this season for Chicago but could conceivably work his way back to being a late-inning option for the Astros. He'll report to the club's spring training complex first before eventually going to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Jose Abreu went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBI as the White Sox bested the Red Sox 4-1 on Tuesday.

Abreu had an RBI triple, his first triple of the year, in the first inning to get the Sox on the board. He then capped the scoring in the eighth with a two-run double. Abreu has a seven-game hitting streak during which he has six multi-hit games. After an ugly start, his season line is up to .252/.331/.398.

Justin Smoak was the Blue Jays' offense Tuesday versus the Rangers, tying the game in the ninth with a homer and winning it with another homer in the 10th.

Not a bad time for your first two longballs of the season. Smoak took closer Shawn Tolleson deep to the opposite field with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the ninth and then deposited a Phil Klein offering again over the left-field wall with a runner on in the 10th. They were the only three runs of the game for the Blue Jays. Smoak is sporting a nifty .267/.421/.422 batting line on the season and will continue to hold down first base with Chris Colabello suspended.

Jeff Samardzija disposed of the Reds with ease Tuesday, recording nine strikeouts over eight frames of one-run ball in a 3-1 victory.

Shark served up a longball to Adam Duvall, but it was a solo shot and he allowed just three hits and one walk on the night. Samardzija has been a bit up and down so far this season as he often can, but he's ultimately produced with four wins, a 3.32 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 35/12 K/BB ratio across 40 2/3 innings. He'll try to keep it going this weekend at home versus the Rockies.
May 3 - 11:23 PM

Aaron Nola pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out seven, in a 1-0 shutout of the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Nola's stat line looked eerily similar to the one he put up against the Nationals in his last start, allowing just two hits and a walk while fanning seven. It was a continuation of a coming out party for the 22-year-old, who has followed up on a promising 2015 debut by posting a 2.93 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 44/7 K/BB ratio over 40 innings. Nola will try to stay hot Sunday when he visits the Marlins.
May 3 - 11:16 PM

Howie Kendrick went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Dodgers doubled up the Rays 10-5 on Tuesday.

Kendrick had just four hits since April 15 before Tuesday's outburst. He swatted a two-run double in the fifth, his only extra-base hit of the evening and his first such hit all year. Those statistics indicate what kind of start to the season the 32-year-old has endured, batting just .197/.222/.213 even with the great game.
May 3 - 10:48 PM

Marcell Ozuna homered for the third straight game Tuesday, smashing a two-run shot in a win over the Diamondbacks.

His shot in the sixth inning knocked out Patrick Corbin, and the D'Backs took the lead for good later in the frame. Ozuna got off to a slow start this season but is finally starting to heat up with longballs each of the last three times out. He now has five dingers on the season after hitting just 10 during his disappointing 2015 campaign.
May 3 - 10:43 PM

Matt Wisler permitted just one hit over eight shutout innings in Tuesday's 3-0 victory over the Mets.

Wisler didn't exactly dominate Tuesday. He struck out only four and walked two and was the beneficiary of a handful of line drives right at fielders. However, it's obviously hard to argue with the results. The young right-hander picked up his first victory of the season while lowering his ERA to 3.24 and WHIP to 0.90. Wisler will try to keep it going next week versus the Phillies.
May 3 - 10:27 PM

Jake Arrieta yielded just two hits across seven shutout innings in Tuesday's 7-1 victory over the Pirates.

Arrieta walked the first two batters of the game, which made you think he might have a rare off night. Instead, he allowed only two singles and no runs the rest of the way. Arrieta struck out five on the night and now sports a 37/12 K/BB ratio across 43 innings to go along with a 0.84 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 6-0 record. Absurd. Arrieta goes up against the Nationals this weekend.
May 3 - 10:00 PM

Alex Rodriguez will undergo an MRI on his right hamstring.

A-Rod pulled up lame while running to first base in the fifth inning Tuesday and manager Joe Girardi acknowledged after the game that the situation is "definitely worrisome." It sounds like a disabled list stint could be coming for the veteran slugger. Dustin Ackley replaced him in the Yankees' lineup on Tuesday night.
May 3 - 9:58 PM

Billy Hamilton was removed from Tuesday's game against the Giants with a jammed left thumb.

Hamilton first jammed the thumb April 15 at Busch Stadium while making a diving catch and it has bothered him off and on since. He was 0-for-2 before exiting on Tuesday night and is batting just .215/.271/.354 in 23 games this season. Tyler Holt took over in center field.

Francisco Lindor went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and three runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Tigers.

Lindor's long three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning off of Justin Verlander effectively ended the game, extending the Indians' lead to 7-2 at the time. It was the young shortstop's second longball of the season and pushed his RBI total up to 12. With a .315/.380/.438 batting line in his first 23 games, Lindor has certainly avoided a sophomore slump to this point.
