Andrew Heaney fell to 0-2 after allowing five runs over five innings in Tuesday's loss to the Phillies.

The Phillies were on top of Heaney early, scoring three times in the first inning and once more in the second. The lefty allowed four hits -- including Marlon Byrd's two-run home run in the first inning -- while walking two and striking out five. A consensus top prospect, Heaney has a 4.91 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and an 8/3 K/BB ratio over his first two starts. He has a tough task ahead of him, as he will match up against the Athletics at home in his next start.

Alexi Amarista hit a walkoff RBI single in the 10th of Saturday's 2-1 victory over the Dodgers.

Will Venable opened the bottom of the 10th with a single and then stole second base, setting himself up to score the winning run on Amarista's knock to shallow left-center field. It was the second straight extra-innings win for the Padres over the visiting Dodgers, and they also walked off against the Brewers on Wednesday. The Friars are playing the role of spoiler here in late August.

Cory Rasmus struck out six batters over three scoreless innings Saturday in a spot start against the A's.

And the Angels went on to win 2-0, with eight different pitchers combining on the shutout. Rasmus gave up only one hit and did not issue a walk over the first three frames, and the A's managed just two hits against the Anaheim bullpen. The Angels are now four games up on Oakland in the American League West standings.

Matt Holliday slugged two homers and tallied five total RBI as the Cardinals won the second half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs by a score of 13-2.

Holliday drew a walk in the first inning, cranked a three-run bomb in the fifth inning, and then slugged a solo shot and took a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded in the Cardinals' nine-run eighth. Holliday, a perennial second-half stud, is batting .263/.365/.421 overall this season with 15 home runs and 74 RBI in 131 games.

Orioles acquired INFs Kelly Johnson and Michael Almanzar from the Red Sox for INFs Jemile Weeks and Ivan DeJesus Jr.

It's the second waiver trade of the day for the O's, who also got outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the White Sox. Johnson has batted just .212/.290/.354 in 87 games this season between the Yankees and Red Sox, but he's a versatile defender and will operate in a utility role down the stretch for Baltimore. Johnson's tour of the American League East rolls on.
Aug 30 - 10:38 PM

Dustin Pedroia was displaying concussion-like symptoms after leaving Saturday's loss to the Rays.

Pedroia got hit in the head by Kevin Kiermaier's forearm in a nasty second-inning collision. He's scheduled to see a doctor in Tampa on Sunday morning and seems likely to be placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list.
Aug 30 - 10:32 PM

Jake Odorizzi delivered seven shutout innings Saturday in the Rays' 7-0 win over the Red Sox.

It was a complete turnaround for the young right-hander, who got pummeled for eight runs in four innings Monday by the Orioles. Odorizzi allowed just one Boston hit and struck out seven Boston batters. He'll bring a 10-11 record, 4.03 ERA, and 1.28 WHIP into his next outing at home against the Blue Jays. Consistency remains an issue, but Odorizzi can look truly dominant at times. He has whiffed 163 batters in 147 1/3 innings this year.
Aug 30 - 10:21 PM

Jarred Cosart fired seven shutout innings Saturday in the Marlins' 4-0 blanking of the Braves.

Cosart scattered seven hits and a walk over his seven dominant frames, striking out five. He struggled in his first start with the Marlins back on August 1, but the trade deadline acquisition has been dominant since. He's now 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA in a Miami uniform.
Aug 30 - 10:09 PM

Scott Feldman tossed his first shutout of the season Saturday as the Astros beat the Rangers 2-0.

Feldman carved his way easily through the Texas lineup, allowing only three hits and a walk while striking out five. He's been a disappointment for the most part in his first year of a three-year, $30 million contract, but this outing was truly dominant. Feldman will carry an 8-10 record, 4.09 ERA, and 1.41 WHIP into his next start on the road against the A's.
Aug 30 - 9:45 PM

Orioles acquired OF Alejandro De Aza from the White Sox for RHPs Miguel Chalas and Mark Blackmar.

De Aza has good speed and can play all three outfield positions, making him a nice addition to the Baltimore bench for the stretch run. The 30-year-old was batting .243/.309/.354 with 15 stolen bases in 122 games this season for the White Sox. He'll be arbitration-eligible for the third and final time this winter. Chalas and Blackmar are non-prospects.
Aug 30 - 9:16 PM

Miguel Cabrera made an early exit from the second half of Saturday's doubleheader with the White Sox after appearing to aggravate his lingering right ankle injury.

It was overly ambitious of the Tigers to think that Cabrera -- who has been limping around for weeks -- could gut it out for both games. He looked to be in serious discomfort on a groundout in the top of the fourth inning and did not take the field for the bottom of the fourth. Cabrera can probably be considered day-to-day through the rest of 2014.
Aug 30 - 8:32 PM

Mark Melancon picked up his 26th save of the season Saturday in the Pirates' 3-2 defeat of the Reds.

Melancon retired all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning, one via strikeout. He owns a dominant 2.04 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 54/9 K/BB ratio in 57 1/3 frames this season for the Bucs.
