Alex Wood tossed seven shutout innings in his return to the rotation as the Braves beat the Astros 4-0 on Wednesday.

Making his first start with the big club since May 4, Wood showed why he was the easy choice to replace Gavin Floyd. The left-hander allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out four, needing only 79 pitches to get through seven innings. Wood now owns a 3.07 ERA and 1.22 WHIP through 67 1/3 innings this season, and he's another good fantasy play next week with games against the Mets and Diamondbacks.

Coco Crisp (elbow) said that he "doesn't know" if he'll be ready for Opening Day.

Crisp played in a minor league camp game on Tuesday, going 0-3 with a walk. The A's have been going slow with Crisp this spring. That he is still uncertain of his status for the opener could be an indication that a DL trip is an increasing possibility. Crisp has been moved to left field from center, in the hopes of preserving the veteran's health.

Brewers manager Ron Roenick said that Ryan Braun's thumb is no longer a concern.

Braun underwent thumb surgery in October and has been on the mend ever since. He appears to be fully recovered. Braun will be ready for Opening Day. As long as he's healthy, he remains one of the best hitters in the game. The thumb issue is one to watch during the season, but for now, he should be good to go.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said that Ryan Rua had been awarded the starting left field job out of spring training.

Rua's spring numbers back it up, as he hit .302/.351/.509 with a homer, two triples and nine RBI during spring games prior to the final decision. With the starting job locked up, Rua is an interesting player for deeper AL-only drafts. He slashed .306/.378/.488 in the minors last season and also contributed at the major league level.

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said that Domonic Brown (achilles) would begin the season on the DL.

Brown was diagnosed with tendinitis of the left Achilles a little over a week ago and has been making slow progress toward recovery. This leaves the team in a state of flux, as their current outfield options to replace Brown are the likes of Jeff Francoeur and Darin Ruf. Brown's timetable for return has still not been set.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that there was no timetable for the return of Didi Gregorius (wrist).

The Yankees need to see the swelling in Gregorius' left wrist subside before they're able to give an estimate for his return. He suffered the injury diving for a ball on Saturday. Gregorius previously indicated that he thought he'd be ready to play on Opening Day.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has not ruled out the possibility of Justin Verlander (triceps) starting the season on the DL.

While Ausmus didn't rule out the DL, he did say that he thought that Verlander would be fine long-term, even going as far as saying that the big money starter could be fine "even more short-term." This all sounds very vague and uncertain. Verlander could pitch in a minor league game on Friday, but barring progress, the DL is looking like a more and more likely option.

Jayson Werth (shoulder) indicated that he wasn't sure when he would be able to return.

Werth saw his first action of the spring on Monday, going 1-for-2 in a minor league game. He's recovering from a January shoulder surgery to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder. While he said he felt good following the game, he also noted that he didn't know how things would progress moving forward. Uncertainty aside, all signs point toward Opening Day or shortly thereafter for the veteran.

J.J. Hardy said that his shoulder was feeling "a lot better" than on Monday.

Hardy underwent an MRA on the left shoulder on Monday, which revealed a muscle strain. He's being shut down from baseball activities for the next ten days. While it's feeling better, Hardy won't be swinging a bat until the swelling is reduced. He should be able to field grounders while he waits. In the meantime, Everth Cabrera should fill in as starter. In deeper AL-only leagues, Cabrera's speed could make him a short-term asset.

Dodgers signed RHP Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract.

Garcia, 38, pitched in Taiwan last season after failing to make the Braves' Opening Day roster. He held a 4.37 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 17 appearances -- 13 starts -- for the Orioles and Braves in 2013. Garcia will give the Dodgers some rotation depth in the minors with Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) out indefinitely and Brandon Beachy (elbow) working his way back from Tommy John surgery.

Padres manager Bud Black said Monday that he would "possibly" consider using Wil Myers some at first base during the season.

Myers played three innings at the position Sunday and also played two games at first base last season with the Rays. "Possibly," Black said when asked about using Myers at first during the season. "The versatility that Wil has shown in his entire professional career is something not to ignore." It seems unlikely that Myers will play a whole lot at first, but we could see it some against lefties, allowing the Padres to bench the left-handed hitting Yonder Alonso and put Cameron Maybin in center field.

Carlos Rodon will begin the season in Triple-A Charlotte's rotation.

Rodon hasn't officially been re-assigned to minor league camp yet, but both White Sox manager Robin Ventura and general manager Rick Hahn indicated that the move was coming. Hahn did suggest that Rodon could eventually come up to help in relief if a need arises, but for now the left will stay stretched out as a starter. He stands a good chance to be in Chicago's rotation at some point this season. "He could survive in the bullpen right now, yes," Hahn said. "But is that the best move for his long-term development and long-term value to the Chicago White Sox, or having a front-end starter?"
