Marlins optioned 1B Justin Bour to Triple-A New Orleans.

Bour gets the boot despite batting .300/.391/.350 over 13 games this season. The Marlins are replacing him with Brian Flynn.

Marlins signed 1B/OF Michael Morse to a two-year, $16 million contract.

Morse hit .279/.336/.475 with 16 homers and 61 RBI in 131 games for the Giants last season. While he is 32 years old, Morse has shown a consistent bat when he's healthy and at a cheap price, he should provide nice numbers and veteran leadership for a Marlins offense that's coming together this off-season.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal hears that the Giants have re-signed Sergio Romo to a two-year, $15 million deal.

Romo had an up-and-down 2014 season, ending the year with a 3.72 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 59/12 K/BB ratio over 58 innings. While he drew interest from multiple big-market teams, he's apparently decided that he's most comfortable remaining with the reigning champs. They'll be getting him on a relatively cheap deal in comparison to other relievers this off-season.
Dec 17 - 2:53 PM

Mariners acquired OF Justin Ruggiano from Cubs for RHP Matt Brazis.

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reported that the deal was done. Ruggiano hit .281/.337/.429 over 81 games in 2014. Health will be the primary concern with Ruggiano, though, as he underwent ankle surgery near the end of the 2014 campaign. He will compete for a starting job and, if nothing else, should be a serviceable backup bat for the M's.
Dec 17 - 12:35 PM

Red Sox acquired RHP Anthony Varvaro from the Braves for RHP Aaron Kurcz and cash considerations.

Varvaro was designated for assignment by the Braves several days ago. He's been a solid bullpen contributor, posting a 2.99 ERA over 153 appearances in the last four seasons. In 2014, he put up a 2.63 ERA. He should serve as a quality arm and supply the Red Sox with a nice depth piece.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Rays and Padres were "nearing the finish line" on a trade involving Wil Myers.

No word on if there's a third team involved in the possible trade, though Crasnick tweeted that he was hearing that it was a two-team trade with the possibility of the Rays flipping a prospect later. Among the prospects who could possibly be shifting from the Padres to the Rays are the likes of Austin Hedges, Matt Wisler, Burch Smith and/or R.J. Alverez. Myers struggled in 2014, hitting just .222/.290/.320 with six home runs and 35 RBI in 87 games. Despite his struggles, the 24-year-old Myers is a unique talent who is under contractual control until 2019.

Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reports that Ian Desmond "remains a possibility" for the Mariners.

The Nationals don't seem optimistic about signing Desmond to a long-term extension, so they might decide to get something for him now even though he'd be a big part of a contending team in 2015. The Mariners are reportedly close to trading for a hitter, and it's possible Desmond might be their guy. The shortstop will make $11 million in 2015 before hitting free agency next winter.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers are talking to teams about a trade involving Brandon League.

Rosenthal says that the Dodgers are willing to eat almost half of League's $7.5 million salary for next season in order to move him. League is coming off a nice season, having posted a 2.57 ERA over 63 appearances, so he could draw some interest with the Dodgers paying down part of his contract.
Dec 16 - 10:44 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Angels discussed a possible Josh Hamilton with the Rangers and Padres this offseason.

Rosenthal cautions that the talks were "exploratory in nature" and "did not gain traction." However, while he adds that a trade doesn't figure to take place "anytime soon," he predicts that Hamilton will be dealt before the end of his contract. Hamilton, who is owed $83 million over the next three seasons, had just a .745 OPS last season while being limited to 89 games due to injury.
Dec 16 - 10:40 PM

Padres signed RHP Brandon Morrow to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

Morrow can earn up to $5 million in performance-based bonuses if he's starting and up to $1 million if he's in a relief role. The 30-year-old right-hander was limited to 33 1/3 innings this past season in Toronto because of a finger injury, but he's flashed dominance at times over the course of his eight-year major league career. This could become a good bargain for the Friars.
Dec 16 - 5:53 PM

Indians signed RHP Gavin Floyd to a one-year, $4 million contract.

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish says the deal includes $6 million in performance-based bonuses. Floyd was limited to nine starts in 2014 due to a fractured olecranon in his right elbow. He also underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in 2013. But the expectation is that Floyd will be fully healthy by the start of the 2015 season, and there's a chance he'll wind up being a nice addition for the Tribe.
Dec 16 - 4:16 PM

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that Garrett Jones is generating trade interest.

The Marlins are getting calls on the heels of a reported agreement with free agent Michael Morse. Jones could stick around as a left-handed backup first baseman and outfielder, but Frisaro hears that he'll most likely be dealt. The 33-year-old is set to earn $5 million in 2015.
