Carlos Beltran belted a three-run home run in the fifth inning, his only hit in four at-bats, as the Yankees defeated the Twins on Thursday.

Beltran is having his worst offensive season since the turn of the millennium, so the fifth-inning blast was a welcome sight for the Yankees, who won by a three-run margin. Beltran is slashing a meager .222/.277/.416 with nine home runs and 27 RBI.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox will consider carrying Blake Swihart on the Opening Day roster if Christian Vazquez (elbow) needs Tommy John surgery.

It had been reported previously that Swihart was under consideration for a roster spot, but Heyman is the first to reveal that Vazquez might need Tommy John surgery. The longer Vazquez would be out, the better you'd have to think the chance are at Swihart cracking the roster. Vazquez is being examined by Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday to see if he needs season-ending surgery. Swihart hit .293 with 13 home runs and 64 RBI between Double- and Triple-A last season. He'd figure to split playing time with Ryan Hanigan if on the roster.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Christian Vazquez could require Tommy John surgery after an MRI revealed damage to his right ulnar collateral ligament.

The Red Sox haven't commented on the situation, but the fact that Vazquez is being sent to Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday for a second opinion isn't a good sign. Heyman has confirmed everyone's worst fear, as Vazquez would be knocked out for the season if an operation is required. Ryan Hanigan is perfectly capable of holding down the fort, but the Red Sox are reportedly considering keeping top prospect Blake Swihart on the roster.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports that it "seems doubtful" Garrett Richards (knee) will be ready on April 14 when the Angels first need a fifth starter.

Richards was thrilled with how he felt during an appearance in a minor league game Saturday, but the Angels are understandably proceeding very cautiously with the young right-hander. DiGiovanna expects Richards to be ready "soon after" April 14. The Halos will go with four starters early on, with Andrew Heaney or Nick Tropeano looking likely to get the ball on April 14.

Taijuan Walker has won the fifth spot in the Mariners' rotation.

It was a mere formality at this point but became official when Roenis Elias was optioned to Triple-A Sunday. Walker has been unscored upon over 18 frames while boasting a 19/4 K/BB ratio. The Mariners will monitor his innings this season, but the young right-hander makes for an intriguing mid- to late-round gamble in fantasy leagues.

The Phillies have named Cole Hamels their Opening Day starter.

Now there's a shocker (not really). Hamels holds a 5.17 ERA this spring, but obviously zero stock should be placed into that. The lefty could struggle for wins on the rebuilding Phillies, but he's a good bet to be traded at some point before the deadline.
Mar 29 - 1:12 PM

T.J. House has been named the Indians' No. 5 starter.

Zach McAllister has captured the fourth spot in news that doesn't surprise anyone following Danny Salazar's demotion. House holds a 5.60 ERA this spring but also a 15/3 K/BB ratio across 17 2/3 innings. The southpaw posted a 3.35 ERA and 80/22 K/BB ratio over 102 frames for the Tribe last season and makes for a great late-round starter flier in fantasy leagues.

Justin Verlander did some light tossing on Sunday and reported improvement with his ailing right triceps.

He was lifted from an appearance Friday due to soreness in his triceps but is starting to feel a bit better. The Tigers don't appear overly concerned here, but Verlander could still potentially miss his first start of the season with Opening Day so close. It's not known yet whether he'll be able to make his next scheduled Grapefruit League start.

Michael Brantley (back) is back in the Indians' lineup Sunday.

Brantley has been bothered by a back issue a couple times this spring and missed a few games this time around. Still, the Indians appeared to have just been exercising caution here. A breakout star last season, Brantley will be ready to roll on Opening Day if he can avoid setbacks.
Mar 29 - 11:16 AM

The Marlins have named Henderson Alvarez their Opening Day starter.

He'll toe the rubber on April 6 versus the Braves. The honor for Alvarez is well earned, as the right-hander is coming off a season where he held a 2.65 ERA across 30 starts. His fantasy value is held down by his lack of strikeouts, but he's still a mixed league-worthy asset.
Mar 29 - 10:59 AM

Robert Murray of MLBDailyRumors.com reports that the Diamondbacks are "getting trade calls" regarding Aaron Hill.

Murray adds that it's "unclear who has expressed interest in Hill, but at least a few teams have come calling about him." CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier this month that the D'Backs were shopping Hill, so this comes as no surprise. With the club considering going with Nick Ahmed at shortstop and Chris Owings at second base, they'd probably be better off moving Hill if they can find a taker. He's owed $24 million through the end of next season.
Mar 29 - 10:31 AM

The Red Sox have named Clay Buchholz their Opening Day starter.

Buchholz will take on the Phillies on April 6 and will be followed by Rick Porcello. The veteran right-hander is coming off a 2014 season that saw him post a 5.34 ERA over 28 starts, but he's been excellent this spring with an 18/3 K/BB ratio over 15 innings. The Red Sox' rotation is looking pretty shaky heading into the season.
