Ryan Braun (back) has returned to Monday's lineup against the Phillies.

Braun left Saturday's game with lower back spasms and was out of the lineup Sunday, but he's ready to give it a go. He'll bat second against Cole Hamels.

Will Middlebrooks (finger) will be activated from the disabled list prior to Friday's game.

It's been a good last 24 hours for Middlebrooks, as Stephen Drew getting shipped out freed up third base for him again and Shane Victorino's (back) injury created a spot for him on the roster. Though the 25-year-old is batting just .197/.305/.324, he has the pop to help out in deeper leagues now that he has an everyday job back.

Starling Marte (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.

Marte went through a full workout Tuesday and appears ready to rejoin the big club now, but the Pirates understandably want to play it cautiously. The outfielder will play four games for Indy before being activated early next week if all goes well.

Mariners acquired OF Austin Jackson from the Rays via the Tigers for SS Nick Franklin in Thursday's three-team trade that sent David Price to Detroit.

We mocked Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik earlier in the day for attempting to patch huge outfield holes with Chris Denorfia, but Trader Jack got the last life. For a year now, he refused to sell low on Franklin, whom the organization had clearly soured on. His patience paid off today, when Tampa Bay had Jackson in the Price package but nowhere to put him with Desmond Jennings manning center field. James Jones and Dustin Ackley project to flank Jackson in Seattle's outfield for now, with Endy Chavez, Stefen Romero, Corey Hart and Denorfia coming off the bench. Jackson is suffering through a down year (.270/.330/.397), but we aren't concerned about him long-term.

Rays acquired LHP Drew Smyly and SS Willy Adames from the Tigers in a three-team trade that sent LHP David Price to Detroit.

Smyly isn't Price, but he's only 25, is under team control for four more seasons, and should remain a solid mid-rotation starter throughout that time. The left-hander is 6-9 with a 3.77 ERA, and has logged a career 3.46 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 275-plus innings. He teams with Chris Archer, Alex Cobb, Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Hellickson to give Tampa Bay an outstanding young rotation under team control for years to come.

Shane Victorino is expected to be placed on the disabled list after aggravating his back injury.

It's not clear when Victorino re-injured his back or how much time he'll miss, but obviously it's discouraging. He just returned from the disabled list less than two weeks ago and will be placed back on it prior to Friday's game. The newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes will assume the majority of the at-bats in right field.

Rays acquired SS Nick Franklin in a three-team trade that sent LHP David Price to the Tigers.

Tampa Bay immediately optioned Franklin to Triple-A. It seems as though Tampa Bay is viewing Franklin as Ben Zobrist 2.0, so it's a little disappointing they couldn't move Ben Zobrist 1.0 today to open a spot in the lineup. The talented 23-year-old raced through the minor leagues -- his time at Low-A Clinton was even chronicled in the 2013 book Class A -- but fell out of favor in Seattle by slashing a rough .214/.291/.358 over 119 games the past two seasons. The former top prospect has destroyed, and continues to destroy, minor league pitching, so this is an interesting gamble by Andrew Friedman.

Tigers acquired LHP David Price in a three-team trade with the Rays and Mariners.

Detroit shipped LHP Drew Smyly and SS Willy Adames to the Rays, and OF Austin Jackson to the Mariners, which sent SS Nick Franklin to Tampa Bay. It's a master stroke by gutsy Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski, who watched rivals arguably overpay for frontline starting pitching throughout the week and then swooped in at the very last second to steal Price for far less than his expected, ahem, price tag. Price now leads a rotation which includes Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Rick Porcello, and is protected from injury by top prospect Robbie Ray. If Verlander can return to form, Detroit will have a rotation on par with anything we've seen in the last few decades.

According to Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com, Matt Cain does not have any damage in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow.

It was easy to fear the worst when it was reported that Cain was scheduled to see Dr. James Andrews, but it appears that he has avoided the worst-case scenario. Still, apparently he's dealing with "loose bodies" in the elbow and the Giants are discussing how to proceed. There should be more clarity on his status soon, but it doesn't look like he'll be pitching for the Giants in the near future.

C.J. Wilson (ankle, hip) is penciled in to rejoin the Angels' rotation Saturday against the Rays.

Wilson has been sidelined since early July with a right ankle sprain and hip tightness, but he made it through a minor league rehab start Monday with no issues. The 33-year-old southpaw owns a 4.33 ERA and 107/48 K/BB ratio in 116 1/3 innings this season, but there's reason to expect better if he's back to full health.
Jul 31 - 5:34 PM

Yankees acquired INF/OF Martin Prado from the Diamondbacks for C Peter O’Brien and either a player to be named later or cash.

New York buys low on a formerly rock-solid veteran batting just .270/.317/.370 with five homers this season. Over a nine-year career, spent between the Braves and Snakes, Prado is a career .290 hitter with a .340 OBP. Prado can play all over the place -- with first base, second base, third base, shortstop, leftfield and rightfield on his resume -- but he's expected to get most of his at-bats in right field. Because of that, this trade is bad news for Ichiro Suzuki's fantasy value. What was left of it, anyway.
Jul 31 - 4:51 PM

Marlins acquired RHP Jarred Cosart, INF/OF Enrique Hernandez and OF Austin Wates from the Astros in exchange for OF Jake Marisnick, 3B Colin Moran, RHP Frances Martes and a 2015 compensation pick.

Cosart has posted a 3.57 ERA over his first 30 major league starts and is under control for a few more years, but his 4.13 FIP and 1.42 WHIP suggests that a regression is coming. He will at least get to pitch in a very pitcher-friendly park but isn't much of a fantasy option with his low strikeout rate.
