Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Monday that he expects Mark Trumbo (foot) to be activated immediately after the All-Star break.

Trumbo has moved his rehab assignment up to Triple-A Reno after homering twice in four rehab game with the Arizona League Diamondbacks. The D'Backs season is a lost one at this point, but they'll still be happy to welcome Trumbo back and fantasy owners no doubt will, as well. He was batting .210/.264/.506 with seven homers and 19 RBI over 21 games before suffering a stress fracture in his left foot.

Gerrit Cole picked up his 10th win of the season after limiting the Red Sox to two runs in seven innings on Thursday.

Cole's effort helped the Pirates maintain their foothold on the second Wild Card slot and keep them within arm's reach of first place in the NL Central, polishing off a sweep of the lowly Red Sox. The right-hander scattered six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Now with a 3.85 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, and 118/38 K/BB ratio, Cole will look to keep it going on Tuesday in Atlanta against the Braves.

Anthony Rendon went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a pair of runs scored in Thursday's victory over the Marlins.

Rendon brought his league-leading runs scored total up to 110 with the effort. He's also up to 16 stolen bases on the season, leaving him four shy of a 20 HR/20 SB season. The Nationals' MVP is slashing .286/.348/.473.
Sep 18 - 10:05 PM

Derek Jeter homered for the first time in 158 at-bats on Thursday as the Yankees downed the Blue Jays.

Jeter took R.A. Dickey out to left field for his fourth homer of the season and first since August 1. The soon-to-retire shortstop ended an 0-for-28 skid on Wednesday, so he's been in the business of tying up some loose ends before the season's out. Jeter owns a .250/.299/.303 with 41 RBI.

Josh Hamilton is dealing with tightness and soreness in the front part of his right shoulder/chest area.

It's a different part of the shoulder than what was bothering him before. Hamilton returned to action Tuesday after missing the previous 11 games, but he's now missed the last two contests. He visited a chiropractor Wednesday, but it's not clear what the next step is with his rehab. Hamilton said Thursday that he'll do his best to get ready for the playoffs, but his status is totally up in the air.

Mike Trout is not in Thursday's lineup against the Mariners.

Not surprisingly, the Angels' regulars are sitting after the team wrapped up the AL West on Wednesday night. Here's the lineup King Felix will face: Tony Campana CF, Gordon Beckham SS, Brennan Boesch RF, C.J. Cron DH, Efren Navarro 1B, Grant Green 2B, Hank Conger C, Luis Jimenez 3B, Shawn O'Malley LF.

Nolan Arenado (pneumonia) could miss the rest of the season.

Arenado came out of Sunday's game with a chest contusion and an MRI on Monday revealed signs of pneumonia. He's doing better, but there just might not be enough time for him to make it back at this point.
Sep 18 - 4:53 PM

Jordy Mercer (back) has returned to the Pirates' lineup Thursday against the Red Sox.

Mercer had his back tighten up on him Tuesday and ended up missing consecutive games, but he's feeling better now. He'll bat seventh against Brandon Workman.
Sep 18 - 4:45 PM

Hanley Ramirez (elbow) is back in Thursday's lineup against the Cubs.

Ramirez has missed the last two games with a strained right elbow, but he'll try to give it a go. He'll bat fifth against southpaw Tsuyoshi Wada.
Sep 18 - 4:26 PM

Jose Fernandez (elbow) will have a checkup Thursday.

If all goes well, he should begin a throwing program on October 1. Fernandez underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-May and will likely miss most of the first half next season.
Sep 18 - 4:18 PM

Jered Weaver has been scratched from Thursday's start against the Mariners.

It's not injury-related, as the Angels wrapped up the division Wednesday night and will give him a day to rest after the celebration. It will also allow them to line him up as they want for the postseason. Wade LeBlanc will start instead Thursday.
Sep 18 - 4:09 PM

Anthony Rizzo is not in the Cubs' starting lineup on Thursday night against the Dodgers.

Rizzo missed nearly three weeks between late August and mid-September with a back problem, and the Cubs are planning to rest him every other day down the stretch as to avoid a re-injury. Mike Olt is starting at first base on Thursday versus Los Angeles.
