Andy Dirks was pulled off his rehab assignment due to muscle inflammation in his lower back.

The Tigers announced they had recalled Dirks from his assignment with High-A Lakeland, and the diagnosis is back inflammation due to increased activity. It's obviously not a good sign that he's having back issues, as he's been rehabbing from March back surgery. He was on pace to return near the end of the month prior to being shut down. There's no timetable with the new setback.

Robinson Cano (hamstring) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Thursday.

Cano left Wednesday's game against the Braves due to left hamstring tightness which he experienced when hoofing it out of the box on a double in the third inning. Consider him day-to-day for the time being, with Thursday's MRI likely to shed more specific light on the severity of the injury. Cano said after Wednesday's game that he is not sure if he will be able to play in the Mariners' upcoming weekend series against the Yankees.

Mark Leiter tossed seven scoreless innings and allowed just one base hit in an 8-0 win over the Marlins on Wednesday.

The rookie made it look easy against a strong lineup. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Miguel Rojas poked a double to left field to break it up. Leiter allowed just the one knock and two walks while striking out five in the gem effort. He improves to 2-3 with a nice 3.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 58 1/3 innings.

Rhys Hoskins went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBI to lead his team over the Marlins on Wednesday.

He delivered the decisive blow of the ballgame by blasting a three-run bomb off starter Justin Nicolino in the third inning. He drove in two more runs with a double in the sixth. Hoskins also walked in the contest and is batting an impressive .271/.407/.729 with seven longballs and 16 RBI in his first 14 major league games. The powerful outfielder cracked 29 homers in 115 games at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year before getting called up.

Trevor Williams fired eight shutout innings against the Dodgers but had to settle for a no-decision as his team won 1-0 in extra innings on Wednesday.

Lost in the excitement surrounding Rich Hill's bid for a perfect game was that Williams was matching him inning-for-inning in run prevention. The rookie right-hander surrendered seven base hits and issued four walks against five strikeouts in his best start of the campaign. It was a great effort against the best team in baseball. It was especially nice to see considering he gave up eight runs in three innings against the Cardinals in his previous start. He now has a 4.40 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP in 122 2/3 innings for the season.
Aug 23 - 10:38 PM

Josh Harrison put an end to Rich Hill's no-hit bid by belting a walk-off solo home run in the 10th inning against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

It was the Pirates' only hit of the game and he really made it count. He lifted Hill's 99th pitch of the game over the wall in left field to end perhaps the most amazing contest of the season. Harrison has a .281 batting average with 16 home runs and 47 RBI in 456 at-bats.
Aug 23 - 10:30 PM

Rich Hill took a perfect game into the ninth inning and a no-hitter into the 10th before losing the game to the Pirates on a solo home run by Josh Harrison on Wednesday.

He lost the perfecto on a Logan Forsythe fielding error on a grounder hit by Jordy Mercer leading off the ninth inning. The scoreless game went into extra innings and Hill came back out to pitch the bottom of the tenth. Josh Harrison led off the frame with a walk-off solo homer to spoil the no-hitter and saddle Hill with a loss. The 37-year-old left-hander punched out 10 batters on 99 pitches in the marvelous ballgame. He falls to 9-5 with a 3.32 ERA in 19 starts.
Aug 23 - 10:14 PM

Jason Castro left Wednesday's game against the White Sox with concussion-like symptoms.

Castro will be reevaluated on Thursday. The Twins should have a more clear idea as to how quickly the backstop will be able to return to action once he is a bit further removed from the initial injury.
Aug 23 - 9:50 PM

Guillermo Heredia left Wednesday's game against the Braves after being hit in the arm by a pitch.

Heredia was plunked in the seventh inning and appeared to be in significant pain. He was replaced on the basepaths by a pinch-running Ben Gamel following the hit-by-pitch.

Robinson Cano left Wednesday's game against the Braves with left hamstring tightness.

Cano tweaked his hamstring while rounding first on a double in the third inning. There is no immediate timetable for his return, but hamstring injuries can be tricky to come back from in the short term. The All-Star second baseman will be reevaluated on Thursday.
Aug 23 - 8:45 PM

X-rays on Travis Shaw's injured right foot came back negative.

Shaw fouled a ball off his right foot in Wednesday's loss to the Giants. He was on crutches with his foot encased in a boot after the game, but it looks like the third baseman might have dodged a bullet. The Brewers have deemed him to be day-to-day moving forward. With a natural day off on Thursday, Shaw might not end up missing any games. Stay tuned.
Aug 23 - 8:25 PM

Manny Machado launched a walk-off solo home run in Wednesday's 12-inning, 8-7 win over the A's.

After the A's forced the game into extra innings with two runs in the ninth inning, Machado came up in the 12th and finished matters off in emphatic fashion, swatting a 378-foot solo shot to left-center to end the contest. After a dreadful start to the season, Machado has come on strong after the All-Star break. He has cracked seven homers in his last 10 games and is now slashing .264/.318/.496 with 28 homers and 84 RBI for the campaign as a whole.
