Pedro Alvarez (knee) remained out of the Pirates' lineup Friday.

Alvarez hasn't played since exiting Tuesday's game against the Dodgers with left knee discomfort. The fact that he wasn't able to play following Thursday's off day is a bad sign, but to this point the Pirates haven't given any indication that the disabled list might be a possibility. Brent Morel is at third base Friday.

Nick Markakis is out of the Braves' starting lineup on Wednesday due to a family emergency.

Markakis has been excused from the club to travel back to his home in Maryland, though he's expected to return for the Braves' weekend series against the Diamondbacks. Atlanta has a scheduled day off Thursday.

Ryan Braun is back in the Brewers' starting lineup on Wednesday afternoon against the Angels.

Braun was given the day off Tuesday due to some routine soreness. He will start in left field and bat third Wednesday versus Angels left-hander Hector Santiago. Braun, 32, is slashing .372/.443/.605 this season.

Tommy Pham (oblique) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Memphis.

Pham is finally ready for live action again after missing a full month with a strained left oblique. He should rejoin the Cardinals as an active backup outfielder early next week. The 28-year-old has a cool .809 OPS in 176 career major league plate appearances and he can play all three outfield spots.
May 4 - 10:40 AM

Joe Panik (groin) is out again Wednesday.

Kelby Tomlinson will start at second base and bat eighth against Reds right-hander Dan Straily. This will be the fifth straight absence for Panik, but he was able to do some treadmill jogging and agility drills on Tuesday afternoon. A return should be very close.
May 4 - 10:27 AM

Billy Hamilton (thumb) will sit out Wednesday.

Hamilton was pulled from Tuesday night's game against the Giants after reaggravating his left thumb, which he originally jammed April 15 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Consider the speedster day-to-day. Tyler Holt is starting in center field and batting second Wednesday versus San Francisco right-hander Jake Peavy.

Zack Cozart (knee) is back in the Reds' starting lineup Wednesday versus the Giants.

Cozart tweaked his surgically-repaired right knee in Sunday's series finale against the Pirates and was held out of the first two games of this three-game set with the Giants. It sounds like that was all mostly precautionary. The 30-year-old shortstop has an impressive .347/.350/.533 batting line in 19 games this season for Cincinnati.
May 4 - 9:47 AM

Jason Heyward (wrist) remains absent from the Cubs' starting lineup Wednesday versus the Pirates.

Heyward has been bothered by right wrist discomfort for a couple of weeks and recently had a bad flareup. He has now missed three straight games. Ben Zobrist is in right field, Tommy La Stella is at second base, Javier Baez is at third base, and Kris Bryant is in left field Wednesday afternoon against Bucs right-hander Juan Nicasio.

Lorenzo Cain hit a walk-off RBI single to complete the Royals' 7-6, comeback win over the Nationals on Tuesday.

It will go down in the scorebook as a single, but Cain tattooed a Jonathan Papelbon pitch to center that was just out of the reach of a sprawling Michael Taylor, plating Mike Moustakas and ending what was a three-run inning for the defending champs. Cain finished 2-for-5 in the game. After seeing his average dip to .200 a little over a week ago, Cain is 9-for-26 (.346) during a six-game hitting streak. It has his overall line up to .240/.305/.302.
May 4 - 1:20 AM

Kyle Seager went 2-for-4 with a three run home run in Tuesday's 8-2 win over the A's.

The Mariners already held a 5-1 lead when Seager strolled to the plate to face reliever Marc Rzepczynski with two runners on and nobody out in the eighth inning. He essentially put it out of reach with one swing of the bat, clocking a three-run home run to send the Oakland faithful home in a dour mood. Through his first 94 at-bats, Seager is slashing just .181/.274/.436 with five doubles, six homers and 17 RBI. The sky might be brightening, though, as Seager has notched three doubles, two homers and seven RBI over his last four games.
May 4 - 1:00 AM

Hisashi Iwakuma was fantastic in Tuesday's 8-2 win over the A's, firing seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball.

Lovely work by Iwakuma, who struck out three and walked two. The strikeout total is modest enough, but the A's simply couldn't square the veteran right-hander up at any point. He did not allow an extra-base hit on the evening. The only run to score against him came in the sixth, when Jed Lowrie burned him for an RBI single. Otherwise, Iwakuma cruised. Through six starts (38 innings), he holds a 4.03 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 28/11 K/BB ratio. In his four major league seasons prior to 2016, Iwakuma never finished with an ERA higher than 3.54 (2015). He will hit the dusty trail for a road outing against the Astros next time out.
May 4 - 12:51 AM

Sonny Gray struggled in Tuesday's 8-2 loss to the Mariners, yielding seven runs on 11 hits over seven-plus innings.

Gray was coming off a two-inning debacle against the Tigers (the shortest start of his career). While he managed to pitch into the eighth in Tuesday's tango with the Mariners, the end result was still unsettling. Four of the seven runs on Gray's line came after he trotted out to start the eighth inning. He would not record an out in the frame. It is understandable if fantasy owners are unnerved by his slow start (4.84 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 32/16 K/BB ratio over 35 1/3 innings), but patience is a virtue. Gray will try to turn the statistical ship around at Fenway when he does battle with the Red Sox in his next scheduled start.
