Ervin Santana dominated the Padres over eight shutout innings Monday in the Braves' 2-0 victory.

Santana carved his way through the weak San Diego lineup with ease, allowing only five hits while striking out 11 batters. He did not issue a walk. It was the second straight double-digit strikeout game for Santana, who fanned 10 Marlins last Wednesday night. He is 10-6 with a 3.63 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 118/37 K/BB ratio in 131 1/3 frames this season. A rematch with the Padres is next.

Justin Upton cracked a pair of solo home runs during a loss to the Astros on Saturday.

His two bombs accounted for the only runs his team would score on the afternoon as their wild card hopes took a punch to the nose. Upton went yard off starter Charlie Morton in the seventh inning and again off reliever Will Harris in the ninth. The 30-year-old outfielder is having the best season of his career with new personal highs in home runs and RBI. He has a .279 batting average with 34 homers, 106 RBI, 97 runs and 11 stolen bases in 145 games.

Jose Martinez (thumb) is out of the Cardinals' starting lineup Saturday at Pittsburgh.

Martinez injured his left thumb on Friday night and flew back to St. Louis on Saturday for an examination by the Cardinals' medical staff. There should be an update at some point soon. Matt Carpenter will play first base on Saturday with Jedd Gyorko at third.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Braves have agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract extension with Kurt Suzuki.

Mark Bowman of MLB.com had first reported that the two sides were close on an agreement. The 33-year-old backstop has had one of the finest seasons of his career this year, slashing .271/.343/.525 with a career-best 18 homers and 47 RBI in just 287 plate appearances. He had made it clear to the club that he wanted to return in the same capacity and talks had been ongoing for weeks before it got ironed out. Suzuki earned $1.5 million on a one-year pact this season.

Tigers' manager Brad Ausmus said Saturday that Mikie Mahtook is dealing with a grade 2 groin strain and is likely to miss the remainder of the 2017 season.

It's a tough finish to the season for the 27-year-old who had a breakthrough season offensively. He presumably finishes the season hitting .276/.330/.457 with 12 homers, 38 RBI and six stolen bases. He should have a leg up on a starting job in the Tigers' outfield heading into 2018.

Chris Iannetta had a three-run homer and a grand slam as part of an eight-RBI night as the Diamondbacks beat the Marlins 13-11 on Friday.

A career high in RBI, topping the seven-RBI game he had against the Padres three months ago in June. Iannetta, who spent way too much of the first half playing behind Jeff Mathis, is hitting .257/.356/.514 with 15 homers in just 257 at-bats. That's pretty good for someone the Diamondbacks lucked into when no one else wanted to make a significant commitment; he's playing for just $1.5 million after signing in January.

Justin Verlander gave up just one hit over seven scoreless frames in Friday’s 3-0 victory over the Angels.

Verlander and Garrett Richards matched each other through six innings, but the Astros pulled away in the seventh when Yuli Gurriel took Yusmeiro Petit deep. Verlander struck out six and walked a pair in the victory. He's now 4-0 with a 0.64 ERA and 32/5 K/BB ratio in 28 innings through four starts with his new team.

Jeurys Familia notched his first save since May 5 in Friday’s 7-6 win over the Nationals.

A.J. Ramos got the call to begin the ninth inning to protect a one-run lead, but he was pulled after walking Wilmer Difo to begin to frame and giving up a one-out single to Howie Kendrick. Josh Smoker induced a fly out to shallow left field before Familia struck out Victor Robles to end the game. Ramos is coming off his first blown save with the Mets, so there could be an opening for Familia to see more chances the rest of the way. He should go into spring training next year as the favorite for the closer role.

Rafael Devers went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead three-run homer in Friday’s 5-4 victory over the Reds.

It was part of a four-run fourth inning against Sal Romano. The homer was his first since way back on August 19, snapping a streak of 116 plate appearances. Devers is hitting .333 (18-for-54) over his last 13 games, so he has been hitting recently despite the lack of power. His defense at third base is the more pressing issue with the playoffs approaching.

Wilson Ramos went 3-for-4 with a grand slam on Friday, powering the Rays to an 8-3 victory over the Orioles.

His bases-clearing blast off of Ubaldo Jimenez gave the Rays a 4-0 lead in the second inning. He also singled and doubled in the game. With the three-hit attack, he's hitting .262/.289/.446 with 10 homers and 30 RBI in his first 60 games with the Rays.

Aaron Judge went 2-for-2 with his AL-leading 46th homer, a double, and two walks Friday against the Blue Jays.

Judge provided the only offense of the game for the Yankees with a solo homer off Marco Estrada in the first inning. The 25-year-old fell into a miserable slump coming out of the All-Star break, but he’s turned things around in September by batting .286 (18-for-63) with nine homers, 20 RBI, 19 walks, and 21 runs scored. It’s a good sign for the Yankees with the playoffs approaching.

Bryce Harper (knee) ran the bases, shagged flyballs and took batting practice on Friday.

He hadn't been slated to take BP until Saturday, so the fact that it was moved up would seem to be a good sign. The goal for Harper, obviously, is to get a few games under his belt before the playoffs. He's been sidelined since mid-August with a bone bruise in his left knee and left calf strain.
