Michael Wacha (shoulder) will begin a throwing program Tuesday.

Wacha was given clearance after undergoing an MRI on Monday. He's scheduled to have a follow-up MRI in two weeks to see how his shoulder has responded to throwing. There's no clear timetable for his return, but the Cardinals are optimistic that he'll pitch in the majors again this season.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Yasiel Puig (hamstring) is "feeling much better" and it "may not be that much longer" before he returns.

Puig was shut down just over a week ago after having a setback with his left hamstring during his rehab assignment, but he's evidently made nice progress since then. The Dodgers have yet to reveal when the outfielder will re-start the rehab assignment, but it sounds like it could happen shortly.

MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reports that Cuban right-hander Norge has defected from his native country and is seeking a Major League contract.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan is hearing that the Dodgers are the "early favorites" to sign the right-hander. Passan also notes that "many believe (Ruiz is) the best pitcher in Cuba" and that he's a "short right-hander but will get significant bank." Ruiz turned 21 just over a month ago.

Sportsnet's Shi Davidi reports that the Blue Jays haven't asked the Phillies about Cole Hamels "in months."

The report comes on the heels of a revelation from CBS Sports' Jon Heyman which stated that Hamels would not waive his no-trade clause to go to Toronto. Davidi, though, hears that their inquiry came all the way back during the GM meetings in November. Regardless of when it took place, it appears clear that Hamels isn't going to the Blue Jays.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Henderson Alvarez has been pitching through a "90 percent tear" of his right ulnar collateral ligament "for years."

This is the first we've heard about a UCL issue for Alvarez, although he had a brief elbow problem last season and there were whispers when he went on the disabled list last month that he had an elbow injury in addition to a shoulder ailment. There have been some that have pitched through ligament damage in the past, although it's hard to imagine anyone pitching with as much of a tear that Alvarez apparently has. It certainly makes him a medical red flag moving forward.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Braves inquired on Jonathan Lucroy but were told he was not available.

The Brewers are going to be sellers prior to the trade deadline, but one guy they appear intent on keeping is Lucroy, who is under team control cheaply through 2017. Heyman adds that the Braves have been "disappointed" by the play of Christian Bethancourt, who is batting just .190/.215/.286 and hasn't been as good as expected defensively.

Yan Gomes (knee) will be activated from the disabled list on Sunday.

He will start the series finale versus the Reds. Gomes will be catching a full nine innings for the first time on his rehab assignment on Friday, and the Indians will be careful with him initially upon his return, not playing him in back-to-back games. Brett Hayes had been filling in as the club's backup catch and will be sent down on Sunday.

Blue Jays placed INF Devon Travis on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 17, with left shoulder inflammation.

The Blue Jays had been playing it day-by-day with Travis who is dealing with a sore shoulder where he was hit by a line drive and then agitated with a swing during Saturday's game. His stay on the disabled list should be minimal, so expect him to rejoin the Jays lineup in early June.

Kyle Hendricks fired a complete game shutout on Thursday against the Padres, striking out seven in a 3-0 win.

It was the Cubs' first complete game shutout of the season. Hendricks (4.14 ERA) scattered five hits and didn't walk a batter. The right-hander was so efficient and in control that Joe Maddon allowed him to bat in the top of the ninth inning in order to polish off the shutout in the bottom half. The outing itself came out of nowhere, as Hendricks hadn't topped six innings in an appearance all season. Doing so allowed him to notch his first win of the season while recording his first career complete game. The 25-year-old will try for an encore next week against the Nationals.

Coco Crisp said via Snapchat on Thursday that he got "disheartening news" about his neck injury, but would not elaborate.

The oft-injured outfielder underwent an MRI on Thursday and is scheduled to meet with a doctor in Dallas on Friday. The Athletics should provide an update on his status then, but a trip to the disabled list certainly appears to be in order.
May 21 - 10:04 PM

Madison Bumgarner picked up his fifth victory of the season on Thursday, scattering seven hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings against the Dodgers.

The reigning World Series MVP punched out six on the afternoon and walked two. He out-dueled opposing left-hander Clayton Kershaw and even helped out his own cause by taking Kershaw deep for a solo homer to get the Giants on the board in the third inning. Off to another fantastic start this season, Bumgarner will carry a 2.84 ERA and 53/10 K/BB ratio into Tuesday's matchup against the Brewers in Milwaukee.
May 21 - 7:40 PM

Ryan Howard launched a solo homer Thursday against the Rockies.

Howard sure enjoyed his visit to Colorado, as he collected six hits (including two home runs and a double) in 17 at-bats over the four games. After getting off to a slow start, the veteran first baseman now has nine home runs on the year to go along with an .828 OPS. Only Bryce Harper and Giancarlo Stanton have hit more home runs since April 21. Quite an unexpected turnaround for "The Big Piece."
