Javier Baez hit the game-winning home run in the 12th inning to give the Cubs a 6-5 victory over the Rockies on Tuesday.

Baez' strengths and weaknesses were on full display in his major league debut, as the talented 21-year-old struck out in three of his first five at-bats before sending a Boone Logan pitch to the opposite field for his first career home run in the 12th inning. There will likely be plenty of swings and misses over the next two months, but it will be fun watching Baez put his power to use when he connects. The ability to hit it out at any given time makes him a player to own for fantasy purposes.

Robert Murray of FanRagSports.com was told by a Blue Jays source that the club is "open" to a contract extension for Marco Estrada.

A new deal might not happen until the offseason, but it sounds like Estrada remaining in Toronto is a pretty decent possibility. The righty was claimed on revocable waivers by the Yankees, according to Murray, but the move was made to block another team from getting him and that deadline has passed, so Estrada is staying put. It's been an up-and-down season for the 34-year-old, as he holds a 5.09 ERA but has also struck out over a batter per inning.

Brian McCann (knee) is "almost a certainty" to be activated from the disabled list Thursday, according to Astros manager A.J. Hinch.

It's the first day the catcher is eligible to be activated. Evan Gattis (concussion) looks to be in line for a return by the end of the week, as well, so the Astros should have their top two catchers back in the fold soon.
Aug 20 - 12:59 PM

Lance McCullers (back) threw a three-inning, 45-pitch simulated game Sunday.

McCullers could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment this week. The Astros have yet to decide how many rehab starts the right-hander will require, but it will be at least a couple. McCullers has been on the shelf since late July with a back injury.
Aug 20 - 12:56 PM

Evan Gattis (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Corpus Christi on Tuesday.

Gattis will catch 6-7 innings Tuesday, serve as a designated hitter Wednesday and then catch again Thursday. Assuming that all goes well, he would seem likely to be activated next weekend. Gattis has been out for most of August with post-concussion symptoms.
Aug 20 - 12:51 PM

Carlos Correa (thumb) will take batting practice on the field Tuesday.

Correa took BP off a pitching machine Sunday and "looked great" and "felt great" according to Astros manager A.J. Hinch. Things are progressing well for the shortstop as he works his way back from a torn ligament in his left thumb and it's looking like he has a shot to be activated on September 1.
Aug 20 - 12:49 PM

Clayton Kershaw (back) could potentially rejoin the Dodgers' rotation on September 1.

The way things are lined up, the earlier Kershaw might make it back is August 31, but the club waiting another day when rosters expand is more likely. Kershaw will throw a three-inning simulated game Monday and begin a rehab assignment next weekend. It sounds like it may be the only rehab start he needs before rejoining the rotation, assuming all goes well. Kershaw has been out for the last four weeks with a lower back strain.
Aug 20 - 12:40 PM

Yoan Moncada (shin) remained out of the White Sox' lineup Sunday.

Moncada has sat out two straight due to shin splints in his right leg. Yolmer Sanchez is handling second base again.
Aug 20 - 12:36 PM

Garrett Richards (biceps) faced hitters on Sunday.

It's the first time he's done so since he landed on the disabled list with a nerve issue in his right biceps muscle all the way back in early April. Richards could rejoin the Angels' rotation sometime next month, although obviously there's no clear timetable yet.
Aug 20 - 12:03 PM

Josh Donaldson is starting at shortstop Sunday for the Blue Jays.

It's the first time in his career that he's made a start at the position, although it's the third time he's played there this season. We can't count on Donaldson gaining fantasy eligibility there, but it'll be something worth tracking. Jose Bautista is starting at third base and Ezequiel Carrera is in right field.
Aug 20 - 11:54 AM

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Sunday that it's doubtful he'll start Nelson Cruz in right field for any of the club's three games in Atlanta this week.

Cruz has been lobbying to play, but it appears that he'll be limited to pinch-hitting duty for a few days. The slugger has played only four games in the outfield this season.
Aug 20 - 11:43 AM

Miguel Sano (shin) is not in the Twins' lineup Sunday.

Sano departed Saturday's game with left shin soreness. He's considered day-to-day. Ehire Adrianza is covering third base. Joe Mauer is getting a day off Sunday, as Mitch Garver is at first base.
