Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals are targeting mid-September for Michael Wacha's (shoulder) return.

It's obviously not a hard-and-fast timetable, as Wacha only began light throwing on Tuesday. The Cards also could potentially bring him back as a reliever if he's unable to build up his stamina in time, but the plan for now is for Wacha to return as a starter. Wacha is nursing a stress reaction of his right scapula and noted Tuesday that he'll have to maintain a strengthening program "for the rest of my career."

According to SB Nation's Chris Cotillo, the Astros and Twins have both been "linked" to Francisco Liriano.

Kendrys Morales clubbed a pair of solo home runs and scored three times in Thursday's victory over the Athletics.

Morales took Sean Manaea over the center field wall in the fifth inning and then led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo blast off of Blake Treinen to tie the game before Toronto won in the 10th. With three longballs over the last two days, Morales now has an even 20 home runs on the season. That puts him on pace for his second straight 30-homer campaign.

According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, the Twins are "fielding calls" on Brandon Kintzler and Brian Dozier.

The slumping Twins have gone from buyers to sellers in the span of a week. Dozier attracted significant trade interest last offseason following his breakout 2016 campaign while the All-Star Kintzler would make sense for a bullpen-needy team like the Dodgers or Red Sox. The Twins are also said to be shopping Ervin Santana and Jaime Garcia, who Minnesota acquired from Atlanta earlier this week.

According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Dodgers are "increasingly confident" that they will acquire one of Yu Darvish, Sonny Gray or Justin Verlander ahead of Monday's trade deadline.

The Dodgers were looking to upgrade their rotation even before injuries sent Clayton Kershaw and Brandon McCarthy to the disabled list. With Kershaw facing a potentially lengthy absence, L.A.'s sense of urgency has obviously increased. Darvish, Gray and Verlander have all drawn varying degrees of interest leading up to the deadline. Out of those three, Verlander would probably be L.A.'s fall-back given his age and exorbitant salary. The Dodgers are already the best team in baseball and adding a top-flight starter would probably make them World Series favorites.

Trevor Bauer tossed eight innings of one-run ball in Thursday's 2-1 victory over the Angels.

The talented-but-inconsistent Bauer had his stuff together in this one, limiting the Halos to just seven hits and one walk while recording six strikeouts. He needed 116 pitches to get through his eight frames, which is his second-highest total of the season. It was a much-needed superb performance for Bauer, as his rotation spot would appear to be on shaky ground with Danny Salazar back. Bauer will take on the Red Sox at Fenway in his next start.

Bryce Harper went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored in the Nationals' 15-2 rout of the Brewers on Thursday.

Washington's batters combined for a total of eight home runs, one short of the National League record for home runs in a game. Harper belted a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning, a solo shot in the Nationals' seven-run third inning, and he added an RBI double for good measure in the Nats' six-run fourth. Harper, 24, is slashing .338/.439/.648 with 27 home runs and 79 RBI in 92 games this season.

Zack Cozart (quad) remains out of the Reds' starting lineup on Thursday night.

Cozart re-injured his left quad while running the bases on Tuesday, though he hasn't been placed back on the disabled list yet. Jose Peraza is at shortstop and batting seventh Thursday versus Marlins left-hander Chris O'Grady.

According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports, the Marlins are "now open to trading" starter Dan Straily.

There have been multiple reports stating the Marlins would not deal controllable assets in the midst of their ownership change, but it appears they'll at least do some shopping around with some of those guys. Straily, who's under control through 2020, owns a 3.84 ERA, 1.185 WHIP, and 107/33 K/BB ratio in 117 1/3 innings (21 starts) this season. He has struggled a bit lately.
Jul 27 - 1:32 PM

Cardinals recalled RHP Luke Weaver from Triple-A Memphis.

Weaver will start for the Cardinals on Thursday night against the Diamondbacks, though it might only be a one-off with Adam Wainwright (back) due to return from the disabled list next week. Weaver, a first-round pick in 2014, boasts a 1.81 ERA and 8.9 K/9 in 51 career minor league starts. He has a 5.26 ERA in 39 1/3 career major league innings.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reports that the Twins are "fielding calls" on Ervin Santana and Jaime Garcia.

Minnesota could also move second baseman Brian Dozier and closer Brandon Kintzler ahead of Monday's trade deadline. Santana, a 2017 American League All-Star, boasts a 3.37 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 104/47 K/BB ratio in 136 1/3 innings this season and he leads all MLB pitchers with three shutouts. The 34-year-old right-hander is due $13.5 million in 2018 and he carries a $14 million vesting option for 2019. Garcia was just acquired from the Braves, but the Twins have suddenly lost four straight games.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says the Astros "might be the most focused team" in pursuit of Tigers reliever Justin Wilson.

Wilson has been connected to just about every contending club, but the talent-rich Astros could probably beat any trade offer if they truly wanted to. Wilson, 29, owns a 2.75 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 55/16 K/BB ratio over 39 1/3 innings this season for Detroit, along with 12 saves. The left-hander is under contractual control through 2018.
