Wilmer Flores is expected to get a chance at regular playing time at shortstop.

The consensus is that Flores can't hack it defensively at short, but the Mets are apparently willing to give him a shot there because he has some upside with the bat. While he's just a career .219/.252/.301 hitter over his first 206 plate appearances, Flores could have some deep mixed league value with regular playing time. Ruben Tejada will shift to a backup role.

Mookie Betts blasted his MLB-leading 17th homer in Friday’s 6-2 victory over the Braves.

The Red Sox were up by one run when Betts deposited a two-run homer into the Monster Seats in the seventh. That gives him four homers in his last seven games. Betts also drew a walk and stole a base on the night. In addition to leading the majors in homers, he’s also at the top in batting average (.361) and OPS (1.199). Mike Trout is having an amazing year, but Betts has been the most valuable player in fantasy leagues so far this season.

Max Scherzer secured his major-league leading eighth win after giving up four runs over six innings against the Marlins on Friday.

Scherzer wasn’t as sharp as usual. He surrendered seven hits, including a long game-tying two-run homer to Derek Dietrich in his final inning of work. But the Nationals scored three runs in the seventh to get him the win. Scherzer fanned four, walked a pair, and also hit a batter. This was the first time this season that he allowed more than two earned runs in a start. Still, Scherzer ranks third in the NL with a 2.13 ERA. He’ll face the Orioles in Baltimore next time out.

Marlins' manager Don Mattingly indicated Friday night that Martin Prado was heading to the 10-day disabled list with his left hamstring injury.

The initial reports were that Prado was going to be considered day-to-day, but those appear to have been premature. Prado said after Friday's game that the MRI revealed a significant gap in his hamstring fibers and muscle, and Mattingly noted that he will be out for awhile. Prado also admitted that it crossed his mind that the injury could be a career-ender. It sounds like fantasy owners in redraft leagues can go ahead and cut bait here.

Gleyber Torres launched a go-ahead opposite-field solo homer in the seventh inning Friday to lead the Yankees to a 2-1 victory over the Angels.

Torres also plated a run with an infield single in the second inning, so he drove in both Yankees runs on the night. The rookie sensation has now homered in four straight games. He’s the youngest player to do that since Miguel Cabrera in 2004. That’s some nice company right there. Torres is batting .333/.393/.646 with nine homers and 24 RBI through his first 28 major league games. He has already arrived as a star.

Mike Trout slugged a solo homer and drew two walks Friday against the Yankees.

He tied the game in the fifth inning with his blast off Luis Severino, but it turned out to be the only run of the night for the Angels. Trout has homered in back-to-back games, giving him 16 on the year. He’s drawn at least two walks in three out of his last five games, so he now holds a 48/42 K/BB ratio in 51 games to go along with a .449 on-base percentage. We could keep listing the insane numbers, but we don’t want to make every other player feel bad about themselves.

Joe Musgrove was fantastic in his long-awaited Pirates’ debut on Friday, tossing seven scoreless innings in an 8-1 victory over the Cardinals.

Musgrove’s season debut was delayed due to a shoulder issue from the spring, but he proved to be worth the wait on Friday. He scattered five hits while walking none and striking out seven. He was incredibly efficient in the process, throwing 50 out of his 67 pitches for strikes. According to STATS, he’s the first pitcher to throw at least seven innings on fewer than 70 pitches since Greg Maddux did it on September 18, 2008. Musgrove had the look of a fantasy sleeper after coming over to Pittsburgh in the Gerrit Cole deal and needs to be picked up in mixed leagues after this sort of outing.

Austin Meadows went 2-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base, and two runs scored Friday against the Cardinals.

Meadows is now batting .448 (13-for-29) through his first seven games in the majors. He has three straight multi-hit games. Chances are he’ll head back to Triple-A with Starling Marte (oblique) poised to come off the disabled list, but he’s trying to make the decision a tough one. Either way, it has been an impressive start.

Martin Prado was removed from Friday night's game against the Nationals with an apparent leg injury.

Prado came up hobbling after racing to beat out a ground ball at first base. He had to be helped off the field and down the dugout steps. He was having a terrific night at the plate before the injury, going 3-for-4 with two doubles off of Max Scherzer. Look for an update from the Marlins on his status after the game.

Austin Hedges pulled himself out of his rehab game at Triple-A El Paso on Thursday due to renewed soreness in his elbow.

He'll be shut down for a few days before being re-evaluated. Hedges had been expected to rejoin the Padres this weekend, but that plan is obviously on hold now.

Mariners acquired RHP Alex Colome and OF Denard Span from the Rays for RHP Tommy Romero, RHP Andrew Moore and cash considerations.

From the Mariners' perspective, this is a terrific get, as it gives them an outstanding setup man to work in front of all-world closer Edwin Diaz. From a fantasy perspective, it's a devastating blow to Colome owners. Sure, there was a high likelihood that he could be dealt prior to the trade deadline, but most thought they would get at least another month's worth of saves out of him first.
May 25 - 6:38 PM

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Rays have traded Alex Colome and Denard Span to the Mariners.

Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times hears that Andrew Moore and Tommy Romero are going to Tampa Bay in the deal. It's a big blow to the fantasy value of Colome, who had rebounded after a slow start but is now slated for a setup role in Seattle. Chaz Roe and Jose Alvarado figure to be next in line for saves with the Rays, but manager Kevin Cash can be unpredictable.
