Yoenis Cespedes hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning as the Red Sox eked out a one-run victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

With a runner on second base, Cespedes homered to center field off of Jonathan Broxton to turn a 2-1 Red Sox deficit into a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning. He has now homered in back-to-back games, accounting for his only two home runs since joining his new team. Including his time with the Athletics, the outfielder has a .256/.301/.467 slash line with 19 home runs and 74 RBI.

Miguel Cabrera (hamstring) went through some running drills Friday.

Cabrera also took batting practice again. He's nearing a return to the Tigers' lineup and might not need a rehab assignment. The slugger has missed most of May with a strained right hamstring and has also dealt with some soreness in his hips and back.

Mark Trumbo has been diagnosed with arthritis and chondromalacia in his right knee.

It's a fairly advanced case but something Trumbo had been playing through before it was aggravated on a slide earlier this week. He will have the knee drained and possibly receive a cortisone injection. Trumbo hopes to return to the Orioles' lineup in a few days.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that Daniel Murphy (knee) will begin a rehab assignment Saturday.

It qualifies as a nice surprise, as Murphy as of earlier this week hadn't been able to play in extended spring training games because he was sick. How many rehab games Murphy will require before being activated isn't known, but it surely will be a good number of them since he's been out all season following last Daniel Murphy last October's microfracture surgery on his right knee.

Starling Marte (oblique) could be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

Marte will go through a full workout on Friday and if he gets through that with no setbacks and feels fine Saturday he might be activated. Austin Meadows is a candidate to be optioned back to Triple-A Indianapolis even though he's played so well, as there wouldn't be an everyday role for him.
May 25 - 4:00 PM

Pirates activated RHP Joe Musgrove from the 10-day disabled list.

Musgrove will make his Pirates debut on Friday at home against the Cardinals after missing almost the first two months of the season with a shoulder issue. The right-hander came over from the Astros via trade this past offseason in the deal that sent Gerrit Cole to Houston.
May 25 - 3:58 PM

Tigers activated 3B Jeimer Candelario from the 10-day disabled list.

Candelario has been out of action for the last week and a half due to tendinitis in his left wrist, an ailment he's actually been dealing with for years. The young third baseman will return to a .272/.359/.497 and five home runs.
May 25 - 3:41 PM

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Friday that Mac Williamson will be the team's everyday left fielder.

Williamson returned from the 7-day concussion disabled list Friday. The 27-year-old changed his swing over the offseason and hit three homers over five games with the Giants after mashing at Triple-A Sacramento. Hunter Pence's (thumb) impending return could complicate things, but Williamson is worth a gamble in deep leagues while he's playing regularly.
May 25 - 1:06 PM

Brewers optioned SS Orlando Arcia to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Arcia has given the Brew Crew stellar defense this season, but he's batted just .194/.233/.273 and the team has decided to let him work on his offense in the minors for a while. Milwaukee figures to use some combination of Tyler Saladino, Eric Sogard and Hernan Perez will handle shortstop for the Brewers.
May 25 - 12:45 PM

Red Sox activated 2B Dustin Pedroia from the 10-day disabled list.

Pedroia missed almost the first two months of the season after having a cartilage restoration procedure on his left knee last October, but he's ready to go now after five rehab games with Triple-A Pawtucket (he went just 1-for-14 at the plate in those games). He will hit lower in the order than his usual No. 2 spot, at least initially, and will turn 35 later this season. Pedroia is probably still a good bet for batting average but seems unlikely to bring much else to the table for fantasy owners.

Red Sox designated 1B/DH Hanley Ramirez for assignment.

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe was first to report the news and the Red Sox have made the move official. Ramirez batted .330/.400/.474 in April, but a 0-for-20 stretch pushed his batting line for the season down to .254/.313/.395. Still, the move comes a surprise given that he has the third-most starts on the Red Sox this season and hit in the middle of the order in all of those starts. A $22 million option for 2019 would've triggered had Ramirez reached 497 plate appearances this season, something that no doubt factored into the Red Sox' decision here. Mitch Moreland will see a bump in playing time with Ramirez out of the picture.

Paul DeJong is expected to miss 4-8 weeks after having surgery last week to insert screws and a metal plate into his fractured left hand.

The Cardinals never revealed a projected timetable for the shortstop, but DeJong said Thursday that he heard it would be anywhere from four to eight weeks. "That’s a huge range," he said. "I’m just going to take it week by week. Ask me next week. Hopefully, I’ll be close to swinging." The Cards have been using Jedd Gyorko, Yairo Munoz and Greg Garcia at shortstop since DeJong went down.
