Evan Longoria went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a two-run home run as the Rays defeated the Rangers on Thursday.

Longoria extended the Rays' lead to 3-0 with his third-inning RBI single, and later boosted his club's lead to 5-2 with a fifth-inning two-run home run off of Robbie Ross. The third baseman hasn't had a great 2014, as he has 15 home runs, 63 RBI, and an uncharacteristic .253/.325/.395 slash line.

Zack Wheeler (elbow) is on track to make his Grapefruit League debut on March 10.

The Mets gave him the go-ahead after he completed his first live batting practice session of the spring on Wednesday. Wheeler felt some tenderness in his elbow at the start of camp, but he got over it relatively quickly. The big test will be how he responds to pitching in game action again. He missed the entire 2015 season and threw just one inning on a rehab assignment last year. Wheeler could make things interesting with some strong performances, but Robert Gsellman still appears to the favorite for the final spot in the rotation.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, David Wright is going for a second opinion on his right shoulder.

Wright was originally expected back in camp on Wednesday, but he actually stayed back in New York. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson announced Tuesday that Wright will be shut down from throwing for two weeks due to a right shoulder impingement. No matter what he hears from doctors, he's unlikely to be ready for the start of the season. Jose Reyes projects to begin the year as the starting third baseman and leadoff man.

Sam Dyson (wrist) is scheduled to throw simulated games on Thursday and Sunday.

Dyson sprained his right wrist in a fall over the weekend, but an MRI came back negative and the Rangers don't sound concerned. He doesn't expect the issue to prevent him from pitching for Team USA in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
Mar 1 - 10:38 AM

Twins prospect outfielder Alex Kirilloff will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on March 8.

Brutal news for Kirilloff and the Twins. Kirilloff, 19, was selected No. 15 overall in last year's draft and had a strong pro debut. He originally hurt his elbow on a throw last August and unfortunately the symptoms lingered. The expectation is that he'll be ready for baseball activity in about five months, so he could play in instructs later this year. The surgery is a setback, but Kirilloff still has a very promising future.
Mar 1 - 9:15 AM

Lucas Duda (back) has been cleared to resume hitting on Wednesday.

Duda came down with back spasms last week and eventually required cortisone shots in both of his hips, but he's slowly getting back to normal. The hope is that he could be ready to make his spring debut within the next few days. It's good news, but Jay Bruce is increasingly looking like part of the contingency plan at first base if Duda's health issues linger.
Mar 1 - 9:04 AM

Peter O'Brien launched his third home run of the spring Tuesday in the Royals' 6-3 victory over the Brewers.

He entered the game late as a defensive sub at first base and took Hiram Burgos deep for a two-run shot in the top of the eighth inning. O'Brien now has three home runs and six RBI through eight Cactus League at-bats as he tries to slide his way into the DH mix in Kansas City. Brandon Moss will be the primary option there to open the season, but he struggles against left-handed pitching. O'Brien is a right-handed hitter. Make the connection.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Tuesday that he would "love" to hit Keon Broxton high in the batting order if they can "get (him) going."

Jonathan Villar is almost surely locked into the leadoff spot for the Brew Crew, but Broxton might have a chance to hit second behind Villar and in front of Ryan Braun. It would obviously be a plum spot for a guy who closed with a strong .294/.399/.538 batting line, eight homers and 16 steals in the second half last season. Of course, Broxton will have to avoid another sluggish first half in order to pull this off.

Taijuan Walker struck out three batters over two scoreless innings in his Cactus League debut Tuesday versus the Rangers.

Walker gave up a two-out single in the first inning and a two-out single in the second, but he was otherwise sharp in his first live appearance wearing a Diamondbacks uniform. Arizona acquired the talented 24-year-old right-hander from the Mariners as part of the November trade that sent Jean Segura to Seattle. He is locked into a spot near the top of the Diamondbacks rotation.
Feb 28 - 4:04 PM

David Dahl (back) is expected to miss a few days.

Dahl was a late scratch from Monday's lineup due to a sore back, but Rockies manager Bud Black insists that it's not a major concern. The 22-year-old impressed by hitting .315/.359/.500 over 63 games as a rookie last season and projects to begin the year as the Rockies' regular left fielder.
Feb 28 - 12:50 PM

Sam Dyson suffered a sprained right wrist in a fall on Friday.

Dyson suffered the injury during a PFP (pitchers fielding practice) drill. He was able to pitch on Saturday, but he'll be limited to playing catch on Tuesday. An MRI came back negative and Rangers manager Jeff Banister said that all signs point to the injury being minor, but suddenly his status for the upcoming World Baseball Classic is in question.
Feb 28 - 12:38 PM

Josh Donaldson (calf) took outdoor batting practice Tuesday without incident.

It was his first time taking BP since straining his right calf during the Jays' first team workout of the spring. The next step calls for him to resume running. Donaldson says he feels better every day, so the expectation remains that he'll have enough time to get ready for Opening Day.
