Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw a successful 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon.

Tanaka mixed in fastballs, curveballs, sliders, and even a few splitters while reporting no discomfort in his right elbow. "It went well, but it was actually my first time throwing breaking balls –- something other than fastballs –- in the bullpen, so I felt it was a little bit rusty," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I’ll have to brush that up a little bit." The right-hander was diagnosed in early July with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, but he is aiming to return to a major league mound sometime in September.

Yu Darvish was pulled from his Cactus League debut after one inning Thursday due to right triceps tightness.

Darvish had a flawless first inning, ending the frame with a nasty strikeout of Kendrys Morales, but the Rangers didn't let him go back out there for the bottom of the second. Texas is calling the departure a precautionary measure, but Darvish is going to reevaluated by team doctors on Friday. He missed the last seven weeks of the 2014 season because of right elbow inflammation.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Thursday that Rusney Castillo's oblique injury feels "much better."

Castillo was diagnosed with a strained left oblique muscle Wednesday after leaving an exhibition game Tuesday night with some pain in his side. It's thought to be a minor strain, and it shouldn't affect his readiness for the beginning of the 2015 regular season. Castillo is battling Mookie Betts for the starting center field gig. The 27-year-old Cuban will carry big-time fantasy value if he's getting regular playing time.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports writes that "there isn't any suggestion" Chris Sale will be ready for Opening Day.

Heyman adds, however, that the White Sox expect Sale to be a full-go "not long after" their regular-season opener. Sale suffered an avulsion fracture in his right foot February 27 in an accident at his home. He's likely to remain shut down for another two weeks and will then restart an accelerated spring throwing program. Jeff Samardzija and Jose Quintana are the primary candidates to pitch on Opening Day against the Royals.

According to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, closer Francisco Rodriguez has not passed his pre-signing physical with the Brewers.

K-Rod can't take the physical until he gets to the Brewers' spring training complex in Arizona and he is still waiting for a visa in his native Venezuela. The 33-year-old right-hander agreed to a two-year, $13 million contract with Milwaukee on February 26. The deal also includes an option for the 2017 season. He should again hold big-time fantasy value as the ninth-inning stopper on a decent Brewers team.

Adam Wainwright (abdomen) expects to throw live batting practice Sunday in Cardinals camp.

Wainwright made it through a high-intensity bullpen session on Thursday with no issues at all. He suffered an abdominal strain at the end of February while placing a 45 lb. weight back on a rack at the Cardinals' spring training complex, but the veteran right-hander has plenty of time to catch back up with the other St. Louis starters. Waino figures to get the nod on Opening Night at Wrigley Field.

According to Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun, right-hander Suk-min Yoon is trying to work out a settlement with the Orioles that will get him out of his major league contract and allow him to play in Korea.

Yoon signed a three-year, $5.75 million deal with the O's last February after nine seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization. The 28-year-old starter posted an ugly 5.74 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 95 2/3 innings last summer at the Triple-A level. He never made it to the majors, though he's young enough to give it another shot later in his career.

Garrett Richards (knee) is expected to throw to hitters in his next mound session.

It's a big step for the 26-year-old right-hander, who hasn't thrown a pitch with a batter in the box since tearing his left patellar tendon last August at Fenway Park. Richards is expected to join the Angels' starting rotation by the third week of April and carries big expectations into 2015 after posting a 2.61 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 164/51 K/BB ratio in 168 2/3 innings last season.

Yoenis Cespedes was scratched from the Tigers' Grapefruit League game Wednesday afternoon against the Braves due to tightness in his lower back.

Steven Moya got the nod instead. A missed game in early March is nothing to worry about with Cespedes, who slugged a grand slam against the Orioles on Tuesday. He'll be in left field for the Tigers on Opening Day.

Jason Kipnis (finger) is scheduled to make his 2015 Cactus League debut on Saturday.

Kipnis needed surgery in December to repair tendon damage in his left ring finger, but he is expected to be 100 percent by the beginning of the regular season. The 27-year-old second baseman was a disappointment in 2014, but that just makes him a better value in drafts for the 2015 campaign. There's huge fantasy upside here.

Zack Greinke (elbow) is scheduled to throw live batting practice Friday in Dodgers camp.

If it goes well, he will make his Cactus League debut five days later. Greinke received a lubricating injection in his throwing elbow on February 19 and has been free of discomfort since. The right-hander should start the Dodgers' second regular-season game.
Mar 5 - 11:43 AM

Reds manager Bryan Price indicated Thursday that Joey Votto's Cactus League debut is imminent.

"You won't have to hold your breath, I promise you, you won't have to hold your breath for this," Price said. "Just to reiterate, we just went too far into the rehab and made a commitment to do an extensive rehab to do anything before we feel he's ready. I think he's very close and he's champing at the bit to get in there." Votto missed 100 games last season because of a distal quad strain. The 31-year-old first baseman is an excellent bounceback candidate for 2015.
