Chris Carter hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to lead the Astros to a stunning 4-2 win over the Athletics on Tuesday.

The Astros had been limited to one run by Athletics starter Jason Hammel, but an error and HBP put two runners on for Carter in the eighth inning. Carter made reliever Luke Gregerson pay with his 32nd home run of the season. Carter has now hit 11 homers in 24 August games. He's third in the league with his 32 homers, and Carter has 77 RBI. Barring a September collapse, 2014 will be a career year for the 27-year-old.

Alex Rodriguez, celebrating his 40th birthday, went 1-for-5 with a solo home run as the Yankees topped the Rangers on Monday.

It's the sixth home run he's hit on his birthday, strangely enough. The sixth-inning blast extended the Yankees' lead to 4-2. Rodriguez has gone yard nine times in his last 15 games, including four in his last two. He has 24 dingers overall this season with 59 RBI and a .276/.373/.543 in an outstanding return after missing all of the 2014 season due to a suspension.

Adam Eaton went 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, and two RBI as the White Sox won a slugfest against the Red Sox on Monday.

Eaton led off the game with a triple, then scored the first run in a four-run opening frame. He hit an RBI double in the sixth, and added an RBI single in the seventh, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. The outfielder has a .255/.329/.407 batting line on the year with eight home runs, 23 RBI, and 55 runs scored.

Kolten Wong hit a grand slam, the only offense the Cardinals needed to beat the Reds on Monday.

Wong, who finished 1-for-3, cleared the bases and the fence in right-center in the fourth inning when he took Raisel Iglesias yard. The second baseman now has 11 home runs, leaving him one shy of tying last year's total. Wong has also knocked in 42 runs, stolen 11 bases, and compiled a .275/.337/.433 triple-slash line for the Red Birds.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Dodgers "have let teams know that Yasiel Puig is available in the right deal."

However, he also adds that "teams are showing much more interest in their prospects." That's not altogether surprising, given that the Dodgers have one of the better farm systems in the game and have elite prospects like Corey Seager and Julio Urias. Puig is having a disappointing season with a .253/.327/.423 batting line and just six homers, but he's just 24 and is under team control cheaply through 2019. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman has reported previously that the Dodgers have told Puig he will not be traded.

Curt Casali hit a pair of homers, helping the Rays take down the Tigers on Monday.

Casali put the Rays up 1-0 in the third inning with a solo home run off of Anibal Sanchez. He tacked on a two-run home run to push the Rays' lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the eighth off of Bruce Rondon, finishing 3-for-4 on the night. The catcher has taken only 51 plate appearances, but has already gone deep five times while knocking in eight runs and posting a .261/.314/.652 batting line.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Nationals are "hottest" on Craig Kimbrel.

The Nats have also been linked to Aroldis Chapman, as they appear determined to land an elite closer despite Drew Storen's fine season. Rosenthal adds that the Padres asked for Trea Turner (who they traded to Washington over the winter) from the Nationals in trade talks but were told it wouldn't happen.

Matt Wieters clubbed a walk-off solo home run in the 11th inning against the Braves on Monday.

The two clubs brought a 0-0 game into the ninth inning, and each team scored once in their half-inning to send the game into extras. Wieters ended the drama with a walk-off solo job to right-center off of Luis Avilan. It's the catcher's first home run since June 25, as he has been scuffling offensively. Wieters is hitting .250/.276/.431 with four home runs and 13 RBI since making his season debut on June 5.
Jul 27 - 10:33 PM

Eric Hosmer had a big night in a win against the Indians on Monday, finishing 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI.

Hosmer put the Royals on the board with three-run home run off of Cody Anderson in the first inning. He added an RBI single in the fifth. The first baseman appears to be back in the swing of things after a summer swoon, as he's resuscitated his batting line back up to .308/.368/.467 with 10 home runs and 53 RBI.
Jul 27 - 10:14 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Tyson Ross has been the "focus" of the Cubs' trade talks with the Padres.

The Padres appear willing to trade anyone from their rotation, but Ross would probably be the least likely to be dealt since he's under team control through 2017. The Cubs have also expressed interest in Ian Kennedy and there's been some speculation that they could consider James Shields.

Ryan Braun was a late scratch from Monday's game with lower back tightness.

He should be considered day-to-day. Gerardo Parra moved over to right field in Braun's spot, with Khris Davis entering the lineup in left field.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Monday that Kyle Schwarber could start seeing more playing time in left field.

He played one inning in left field on Sunday and has been working on outfield drills on days he's not starting at catcher. The outfield isn't totally foreign to Schwarber, as he played left field 36 times in the minors last season. "You saw him play one minute of outfield [Sunday]," Maddon said. "You might see him out there more often as we move along." Schwarber has only been starting three out of every five games at catcher, sitting out on days when Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta pitch. Fantasy owners would obviously love to see his bat in the lineup more often.
