According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, J.D. Martinez has received a five-year offer from the Red Sox.

This little tidbit is within the same piece where Nightengale also reports that Eric Hosmer has a seven-year offer from the Padres. Neither player has signed, but things figure to pick up now that the holidays are behind us. While no financial details are being reported by Nightengale, Boston's interest in Martinez comes as no surprise given their need for a middle-of-the-order bat. Both Martinez and Hosmer are represented by Scott Boras.

ESPN's Buster Olney was told by a source that the Manny Machado trade talks are at the "10-yard-line."

The same source told him a week ago that talks were at the 35-yard-line, for what it's worth. The Phillies, Brewers and Dodgers appear to have emerged as the three favorites for Machado and are "waiting for the goal line call," per Olney. The Yankees had been heavily involved in the Machado sweepstakes but appear to have fallen behind the pack at this point. It seems unlikely at this point that Machado will be traded before the All-Star break, but a deal sometime later this week is looking fairly likely.

Giants placed RHP Jeff Samardzija on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.

Samardzija lasted just two unproductive starts before going back on the DL with the same injury that sent him there back in late May. He missed a month of action with the ailment the last time. Derek Holland will go back into the rotation with Samardzija sidelined.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch said Sunday that the team still doesn't have a rehab plan for Carlos Correa (back).

The hope had been that Correa would be ready to begin a rehab assignment over the All-Star break, but that's not going to happen. "He's not doing anything aggressively on the field that would warrant a plan in place to send him out [on rehab]," Hinch said. Of the possibility that Correa could return sometime during the club's July 20-25 road trip, the manager said, "I certainly can’t rule him in. I’m not going to rule him out." It's obviously not an encouraging update on the status of Correa, whose game readiness keeps getting pushed back. He's been sidelined since late June with lower back soreness.

Pirates optioned OF Austin Meadows to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Meadows hadn't started any of the team's last seven games, so a demotion was overdue. He'll play regularly back at Indy. Meadows batted just .204/.259/.245 over his last 19 games.

Gleyber Torres (hip) took batting practice Sunday.

Torres is continuing his rehab progression from a right hip strain and is slated to play in rehab games at High-A Tampa in a few days. He could rejoin the Yankees for the start of the second half next weekend.

Blue Jays placed OF Kevin Pillar on the 10-day disabled list with a right AC joint sprain.

Pillar was injured Saturday while diving for a ball and is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks of action. Curtis Granderson, Kendrys Morales and Dwight Smith Jr. should see more playing time with Pillar out.

Red Sox placed LHP Eduardo Rodriguez on the 10-day disabled list with a right ankle sprain.

Rodriguez was lifted from Saturday's start against the Orioles with the injury and with the All-Star break coming it makes sense to shut him down for a bit. It shouldn't be a long-term injury. Brian Johnson (hip) is back from the DL and will start Sunday. The Red Sox could also get Drew Pomeranz (biceps) as soon as next weekend.
Jul 15 - 10:47 AM

Yoenis Cespedes (hip) will play in a simulated game at the Mets' spring training complex on Monday.

Cespedes has been on the shelf since mid-May with hip and quad ailments but resumed running recently with no issues. If all goes well, he could return for the start of the second half, initially serving as a designated hitter in the team's series against the Yankees.

Javier Baez went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run, a two-run double and five total RBI in Saturday's 11-6 win over the Padres.

Baez first came through with a two-run double, ending Luis Perdomo's night with the fifth-inning two-bagger. He was just clearing his throat, though, as it would not be time for the aria until the ninth inning. That's when he came to the plate after Phil Hughes put the first two runners on to start the frame. Baez made Hughes pay, cracking a three-run home run to end any realistic hopes of a comeback from the home team. This fantastic showing from the second baseman is just one more piece in a wonderful campaign which has seen him build up a .293/.328/.571 triple-slash with 19 home runs and 71 RBI across 338 at-bats. Baez has now doubled in each of his last two games and homered in two of his last three.

Kole Calhoun launched a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the 10th inning in Saturday's 5-4 win over the Dodgers.

The Angels and Dodgers were playing some fun back and forth ball over the final innings of the game, with the American League outfit eventually pulling out ahead for good on Calhoun's home run with two outs in the 10th inning. The outfielder clocked that shot off Kenley Jansen, to boot. Not too shabby. Calhoun earlier managed a double and finished up going 2-for-4 for the game. While he's stumbling along to a .190/.240/.324 triple-slash in 74 games this season, he's seen the ball well against the Dodgers in this final pre-All-Star break series, swatting two home runs on Friday and following up with Saturday's clutch solo shot.

Cardinals fired manager Mike Matheny.

The team tweeted out the news shortly after another dud Cardinals loss Saturday. Hitting coaches John Mabry and Bill Mueller were also let go. Bench coach Mike Shildt will serve as interim manager in Matheny's wake.
